Modeling Practice Immersive Design Methodologies, Michael Aaron Stone 2017 University of Tennessee, Knoxville

Modeling Practice Immersive Design Methodologies, Michael Aaron Stone

Masters Theses

Modeling Practice is centered around an immersive methodology that connects the architect to the process of making. The value of reflection and a consciousness of methodology are intrinsic layers of thought throughout. The act of building influences the process of design. The experience of creating is as important as the final result.

The practice of creating architecture comes with a range of limitations, notably a disconnection from the building process, and in many cases an insubstantial amount of time to interact with the site and surroundings in which the project is located. Throughout many years of working in the profession, …

Perception Of Spatial Impression Due To Varying Positions Of The Source On Stage, SungBeen Cho 2017 University of Nebraska-Lincoln

Perception Of Spatial Impression Due To Varying Positions Of The Source On Stage, Sungbeen Cho

Durham School of Architectural Engineering and Construction: Dissertations, Thesis, and Student Research

The listener’s surrounding environment affects the perception of sound. The environment includes physical factors such as space size, shape, and finish materials, and psychological factors such as individual difference of impression, and vision. Acoustic spatial impression can be defined as the concept of the type and size of space at which a listener arrives spontaneously when he/she is exposed to an appropriate sound field. This thesis analyzes how physical factors in enclosed spaces affect the acoustic spatial impression, and how sound sources at different positions on stage are perceived in different shapes of spaces.

First, existing spatial impression parameters, IACC …

Navigating Through Sex Business Regulation: A Case Study Of Crime Statistics, Kristina Marie Heredia, Enid Arvidson 2017 University of Texas at Arlington

Navigating Through Sex Business Regulation: A Case Study Of Crime Statistics, Kristina Marie Heredia, Enid Arvidson

Planning Masters Professional Reports

The world of sex business regulation can be muddled and confusing. In the past, cities banned sexually-oriented businesses (SOBs) on the basis that they were morally bankrupt and obscene. Courts have ruled that the First Amendment bars cities from regulating these businesses based on the content of the business, and therefore cities have found a way to regulate SOBs based on real or perceived negative effects that SOBs bring to the surrounding community. These negative effects are called secondary effects and their existence has been recently called into question. This report goes over the history of SOB regulations, studies that …

Factors Making A Street A Vibrant Place: Comparing Street Users’ Vibrancy Perception Between Main Street, Fort Worth, Texas, Usa And Inonu Boulevard, Sivas, Turkey, Bilal Caliskan 2017 University of Texas at Arlington

Factors Making A Street A Vibrant Place: Comparing Street Users’ Vibrancy Perception Between Main Street, Fort Worth, Texas, Usa And Inonu Boulevard, Sivas, Turkey, Bilal Caliskan

Planning Theses

Streets are one of the most vital parts of cities not only because they serve urban transportation, but also because they are critical elements of the public realm that people use to go to meet daily needs and interact with others. However, modernist urban planning has often ignored the role of streets as a public space and as starting point for public life because of the increasing number of vehicles on roads, rapid urbanization (urban sprawl) and growing demand for the single family home and the gated community concept. In the last few decades, urban planning has recognized that urban …

A Nearest Neighboring Match Analysis Of The Proximate Principle: The Relationship Between Residential Property Values And Parks In Arlington, Texas, Bryan Isham 2017 University of Texas at Arlington

A Nearest Neighboring Match Analysis Of The Proximate Principle: The Relationship Between Residential Property Values And Parks In Arlington, Texas, Bryan Isham

Planning Theses

Most studies of this type use a hedonic value method of analysis while using spatial analysis primarily as a tool in the analysis. The nearest neighboring match analysis used in this study uses spatial analysis as the primary method of measurement. Housing stock from Arlington, Texas from 2015 – 2016 is used to determine whether this type of analysis is effective in measuring the existence of the proximate principle. It proved difficult to obtain a large enough study group when attempting to include multiple different structural attributes. Ultimately, it was shown that a much larger timeframe may be needed in …

Albuquerque Street Paper Value Chain Development, Jeff C. Hertz

Architecture and Planning ETDs

Rationale for conducting this research project was based upon prior experiences with the street paper community. The first objective of this study was to work cooperatively with local experts in the fields of social entrepreneurship, workforce development, social service provisioning, city planning, and journalism to identify barriers and strategies for developing a street paper value chain for Albuquerque. The second objective of this study was to support these experts in selfidentifying their involvement as potential actors and/or value chain coordinators in developing a street paper operation in Albuquerque. While a comprehensive list of barriers to upward mobility for low-income and …

Hyperelastic Structural Fuses For Improved Earthquake Resilience Of Steel Concentrically-Braced Buildings, Francys López-Mosquera 2017 University of Nebraska - Lincoln

Hyperelastic Structural Fuses For Improved Earthquake Resilience Of Steel Concentrically-Braced Buildings, Francys López-Mosquera

Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Improving structural resilience (i.e., reducing service interruptions and improving rapidity of function restoration) following extreme events is one of the primary contemporary challenges in structural engineering. While massive casualties have successfully been avoided through the adoption of modern building codes, the sole codified performance objective has been limited to the life safety/collapse prevention range of response. Christchurch, NZ, highlighted the insufficiency of this approach, with large sections of the city nonfunctional after a major earthquake, and with subsequent collapses induced by significant aftershocks. Engineering advances to improve building and community resilience are necessary to mitigate hazards from becoming disasters. This …

Climate And Culture: Values, Risk Perception, And Climate Change Adaptation In Delta County, Colorado, Tara Kane Prendergast 2017 University of New Mexico

Climate And Culture: Values, Risk Perception, And Climate Change Adaptation In Delta County, Colorado, Tara Kane Prendergast

Architecture and Planning ETDs

This thesis contributes to literature on climate risk perception and adaptive capacity. It is an investigation into the relationship between values, climate risk perception, and agricultural practices at the community scale. Findings indicate that cultural values have a strong influence on both climate risk perception and the specific practices agriculturalists employ to contend with the environmental conditions they find themselves operating within. They also suggest that environmental conditions – specifically the prevalence of microclimates, topographical complexity, and significant preexisting variability – play an important role in influencing agriculturalists’ perception and climate management.

A qualitative project, this paper is based on …

Z-Cube: Mobile Living For Feminist Nomads, Zi Ye 2017 University of Massachusetts Amherst

Z-Cube: Mobile Living For Feminist Nomads, Zi Ye

Masters Theses

Homes proclaim our social standing and reflect the trend of the times. This project seeks to explore and redefine the relationship between modern homes and modern women who strive for mobile life styles.

Modernism and globalization have brought us a new way of living that could have never been imagined before— our workspace and homes are no longer limited to a specific unit but have extended to the entire globe. The physical changes compelled by modernity have also complemented the changing role of women. Since the beginning of the 20th century, modern women have expanded their lives outside of their …

A Visible History: A Synthesis Of Past, Present And Future Through The Evocation Of Memory Within Historic Contexts, Nicholas Jeffway 2017 University of Massachusetts Amherst

A Visible History: A Synthesis Of Past, Present And Future Through The Evocation Of Memory Within Historic Contexts, Nicholas Jeffway

Masters Theses

How can new spaces evoke the layers of memory associated with historic places and utilize them to envision anew? What are the spatial strategies involved with creating architecture rich in memory and how can a space which is cognizant of its physical and historical context serve as a tool for revitalization?

These questions could be used to investigate revitalization efforts in much of the cities and towns which line the Connecticut River Valley. Ultimately, solutions become directly rooted in the context to which they are set.

With the industrial village of Turners Falls as the setting, this thesis is based …

This thesis investigates integration of University’s Dining Hall and Emergency Shelter in terms of their inter-related sustainability factors; the ability to take advantage of the site to harvest, store, grow and learn about all aspects of food production, and to provide a safe place to stay during times of emergency.

The program, in addition to being a dining hall, is concerned with teaching about food science and culinary studies, relating to the agrarian history of the University of Massachusetts and bringing that history into the current moment with the resurgence of localized food production and in support of the UMass …

An Incremental Intervention In Jakarta: An Empowering Infrastructural Approach For Upgrading Informal Settlements, Christopher H. Counihan 2017 University of Massachusetts Amherst

An Incremental Intervention In Jakarta: An Empowering Infrastructural Approach For Upgrading Informal Settlements, Christopher H. Counihan

Masters Theses

Incrementalism is a growing movement within multiple design disciplines that approaches design with sustainable, social, and resilient aims structured around participatory, infrastructural, and phased approaches to design. Carefully considered structural and independent infrastructural frameworks allow infill and accretion according to the demands and needs of individuals and communities. This paper outlines the theories, case studies, and conditions driving incrementalism. My research has informed my project proposal for an incremental upgrade of a slum located in Jakarta using a phased, soft infrastructural, resident facilitated upgrade and development strategy creating new housing units, productive landscapes, and urban form. Incremental development will foster …
