Making The Gigantic Suburban Residential Complex In Beijing: Political Economy Processes And Everyday Life In The 2010s, Pengfei Li 2017 The Graduate Center, City University of New York

Making The Gigantic Suburban Residential Complex In Beijing: Political Economy Processes And Everyday Life In The 2010s, Pengfei Li

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Suburbanization is an ongoing development process in China. Hundreds of thousands of construction projects are being undertaken in outskirts of most Chinese cities, despite the increasing domestic and international concerns over China’s housing oversupply (Xu, 2010; Gough, 2015; Li, 2015). The suburbanization of China, however, is fundamentally different from the suburbanization of most Western countries, especially the United States, whose massive post-war suburbanization took place as a continuation of its pre-war industrialization and urbanization movements. In the Chinese context, suburbanization is the process of urbanization as well—urbanization and suburbanization have been promoted simultaneously since the 1990s. It is …

Smart Growth And The Irish Land-Use Stakeholder: From Rhetoric To Reality, Dorothy Stewart 2017 Technological University Dublin

Smart Growth And The Irish Land-Use Stakeholder: From Rhetoric To Reality, Dorothy Stewart

The ITB Journal

In the past decade, Ireland has undergone a period of unprecedented growth culminating in the creation of a new economic society based on service provision, a move away from a traditional agricultural base. Allied to this has been an increase in economic, social and legislative inroads into Europe and beyond. This change has brought with it challenges commonly associated with unpredicted growth such as traffic congestion, urban sprawl, access to education and a perceived lack of affordable housing. One part of the solution proposes adopting the principles that underpin the concept of "Smart Growth". This paper critically evaluates the concept …

Construction Agility - An Integrated Management System, Remington J. Goodwin 2017 California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo

Construction Agility - An Integrated Management System, Remington J. Goodwin

Liberal Arts and Engineering Studies

Construction Agility is a management system to be utilized by project managers to create a visual representation of work in progress on the jobsite. This visual component of Construction Agility increases awareness of job site activities among the general contractor, subcontractors, and visitors, thus increasing safety. The system is a Kanban, otherwise known as a batch system, that displays critical activities with physical moveable cards that display the task, the duration, and the proceeding party. There is a focus on handoffs which requires a willingness to open communication. The visual appeal and simplicity of the batch system for all to …

Delivering Design Fundamentals Using Relevant Learning Theories In The Delivery Of An Interior Design Project At Third Level, Tracey Dalton 2017 Technological University Dublin

Delivering Design Fundamentals Using Relevant Learning Theories In The Delivery Of An Interior Design Project At Third Level, Tracey Dalton

Articles

This is a reflection on teaching practice, focussing on design process in a BA Honours in Design – Interior and Furniture, in Dublin Institute of Technology (DIT). An intrinsic case study approach (Stake 1995) was taken for this research, which focussed on the use of the learning theories in the delivery of an undergraduate interior design project brief. A third year commercial office design project has been used to assess teaching and learning styles. This article will show that, in terms of delivery, in a typical third level interior design project in DIT, the process incorporates all of the learning …

Buildings And Books: Segregated Libraries As Places For Community-Making, Interaction And Learning In The Age Of Jim Crow (Presentation For The Society For The History Of Authorship, Reading, And Publishing Annual Conference, June 2017), Matthew R. Griffis

Publications and Other Resources

From the conference program: "This presentation reviews the preliminary findings of a federally funded, 3-year historical study that explores how segregated Carnegie libraries were used as places of community-making, interaction, and learning for African Americans in the age of Jim Crow. Known then as "Carnegie Negro libraries," these public libraries opened in eight southern states between 1900 and 1925 and were an extension of the well-known library development program funded by the Carnegie Corporation of New York.

"Drawing on archival sources, including newly completed oral history interviews with surviving library users, this presentation explores how these libraries helped foster a …

Mano De La Amistad: A Thin Shell Concrete Structure Designed For The People Of Havana, Cuba, Peter Aster, Marta Blachowicz-Scott, Aaron Cook, Alex Erler, Elizabeth Townsend, Ger Yang 2017 California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo

Mano De La Amistad: A Thin Shell Concrete Structure Designed For The People Of Havana, Cuba, Peter Aster, Marta Blachowicz-Scott, Aaron Cook, Alex Erler, Elizabeth Townsend, Ger Yang

Architectural Engineering

In designing a thin shell structure to cover the performance space on Tribuna Anti Imperialista Jose Marti, in Havana, Cuba, we developed a heavily symbolic concept and further abstracted it to reach our design. Basing the concept on the quote to the right by Obama about US and Cuba relations, we wanted our design to be representative of a hand that works to adjoin the plaza to the US Embassy which is directly west of the site. The “wrist” portion adds an asymmetric element, while the fingers provide a backdrop to the performers as well as a view through to …

Implementing Subspace Identification On Shake Table Model, Zoe T. Cooperband 2017 California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo

Implementing Subspace Identification On Shake Table Model, Zoe T. Cooperband

Architectural Engineering

Stochastic Subspace Identification is a field of applied mathematics that takes collected experimental time-history data and gives out information about the system that produced the data. SSI is typically used in control analysis but here we apply the methods to the modal analysis of structures. This senior project didn’t involve theory - instead much of the work was in research behind how Subspace Identification works, implementing the algorithm in MATLAB, and applying the program to shake table data to validate the program. In other words, building the framework to make SSI a usable tool and practical learning experience for other …

The Ginkgo Shell, Mark Luzi, Karla Santos, Josh Cannon, Erika Davis, Nora Villanueva 2017 California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo

The Ginkgo Shell, Mark Luzi, Karla Santos, Josh Cannon, Erika Davis, Nora Villanueva

Architectural Engineering

The overall concept for this outdoor concrete shell structure, located in Furstliche Park in Inzigkofen, Germany, is derived from an abstracted ginkgo leaf. Drawing on inspiration from a poem about the two parts of the ginkgo leaf becoming one, we took the approach of combining both the natural and built environment into one cohesive piece. To connect the two, it was imperative that we place the shell on the site as to have the smallest impact. With a small portion of the overall site used, the unoccupied space further enhances the natural environment. Creating a literal design connection between the …

Shrinkage Cracking In Concrete Tilt-Up Construction, Stewart Hooks, Jack Robinson 2017 California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo

Shrinkage Cracking In Concrete Tilt-Up Construction, Stewart Hooks, Jack Robinson

Architectural Engineering

The purpose of this project is to investigate a particular, undesirable cracking pattern in concrete tilt-up panels that, until now, did not have a known definite cause. The cause of this cracking pattern is hypothesized to be due to shrinkage restraint of the concrete panels. The cracking under investigation occurs at the bottom corners of the Tilt-Up panels, suggesting that the base of the panel is restrained from shrinkage. This project models various components of Tilt-Up Construction that have potential for restraining the panels from shrinking. This project consists of the following main components.

The first aspect of this project …
