Protection Versus First Amendment Violation: Self-Censorship As It Relates To Youth And Young Adult Services, Ann M. Baillie

As the School Library Journal / National Coalition Against Censorship shows, self-censorship among youth and school librarians is on the rise. Though self-censorship has always been an issue in the library science profession, the practice seems to be growing now because books for youth and young adults are becoming more mature. Though this is not an excuse, it does raise the question as to what qualifies as self-censorship.

The Secret Lives Of Ebooks: A Paratextual Analysis Illuminates A Veil Of Usage Statistics, Jonathan H. Harwell, Erin Gallagher

Faculty Publications

This study applies the method of paratextual analysis to six electronic books, or ebooks, in an academic library collection at a small liberal arts college. Two books are selected from each of three platforms: ebrary, EBSCO, and SpringerLink. The characteristics of each book are described, including design and readership, as well as 2 years of usage statistics from the specific library, and altmetrics where available. The paratextual study leads to a closer investigation of the usage statistics themselves and concludes that despite industry standards, they are not calculated consistently across vendor platforms and that while these data are invisible …

The Singapore Management University (SMU) Libraries’ have used the LEAN and Six Sigma methodologies in recent years to plan and push for continuous process improvement in their operations. In one assessment project, the Gemba-Kaizen principle from LEAN was adapted and applied to an initiative centered on assessing the library’s Lifestyle print collection. This strategy became a prime agent for change, which resulted in some marked improvements in collection management activities within the SMU Libraries. Theological libraries and scholarly publishing in religion and theology operate within multiple overlapping contexts and economic markets: faith communities, theological education, scholars, libraries, and publishing. This paper will complete an analysis of available religious publishing and theological library purchasing trends in order to create a thicker description of the system of scholarly communication. Even allowing for degrees of uncertainty in the data presented, there remains a significant disconnect in the rising collective costs for publishing versus the declining expenditures among theological libraries. The trend appears to be that the average theological library is purchasing a declining portion of the scholarship. …

The collections that comprise Twentieth-Century Global Perspectives,

covering 1941-1996, include primary sources from the Central

Intelligence Agency’s Foreign Broadcast Information Service (FBIS)

Daily Reports, 1941-1996 and its Joint Publications Research Service

(JPRS) Reports, 1957-1995. The online versions of these sources are

not consolidated anywhere else, making these collections invaluable

for researchers in the various disciplines covered. Weaknesses of the

database include the inability to search across all collections simultaneously,

the absence of help screens, and the inability to export to

bibliographic management tools such as RefWorks or Zotero.

Out On The Shelves is Vancouver’s only Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Two-Spirit, Queer, Intersex, Aromantic/Asexual (LGBT2QIA+) library. Due to recent organizational changes, it has become apparent that its current classification system is no longer working effectively. Not only was the previous system unstructured and confusing, it failed to explicitly represent many aspects of the community it serves. This project was undertaken during the summer of 2018, researching alternative classification and queer issues in knowledge organization to determine how to improve it. This paper explores the issues and criteria involved in developing a creditable documentary film collection about the Romani people for an academic library. Throughout their history, the Roma, or Gypsies, have dealt with biased, romanticized versions of their story, perpetuated by stereotypes found in legend, literature, song, and film. The expectation in the present undertaking is that the evidence coming from documentary films provides an effective antidote for misrepresentations. The paper reviews pertinent literature, suggests a selection process, and furnishes commentaries on individual titles as they relate to a framework based on the Romani historical and geographical narrative. Zine collections are becoming an increasingly popular addition to public and academic library holdings. Although academics have made strong arguments for the value of zines' inclusion as part of our cultural heritage, current research does not focus on zine authors' perspectives. How do the zine writers themselves feel about having their work--which is often highly personal--collected, shared, and sometimes circulated in the public and academic library sphere?
