Exhibiting Prejudice: How Twentieth-Century Museums Promoted The Eugenics Movement, Anna Wachtel

This research illustrates the impact museums have on social, political, and educational systems through the exploration of the eugenics movement in American museums. Museum professionals promoted racial hierarchies and eugenic ideologies at World’s Fairs through the exploitation of “exotic” peoples and contests designed to judge and categorize racial differences based on an individual’s physical and mental characteristics.

Following World’s Fairs, museums began displaying eugenic themed exhibits. Prominent museum professionals and government officials of the early twentieth century used their position of authority to promote the eugenics movement in National and regional American museums through educational exhibits using approachable science-based exhibit …

This paper presents Library Media Teachers’ (LMT) perspective on student motivation and performance towards the use of School Resource Centre (SRC) for academic purposes. Five LMT from five different schools in Klang Valley, Malaysia were involved in this study. The five schools were selected based on the 5-star rated SRC based on Smart School Qualification Standard (SSQS) rating. The LMT were interviewed individually in order to understand their perspective on the student performance and motivation towards the use of the SRC. The Special Collections Department at West Chester houses an impressive array of children’s literature, though this collection has largely remained untapped and unstudied. However, I have identified many significant holdings upon the shelves, such as Newbery and Caldecott-winning titles, esteemed children’s classics, and other notable works by local authors and illustrators. My presentation will propose several potential research topics for scholarly investigation within the collection, such as studying the history of illustration through our Wind in the Willows collection, observing how depictions of race have progressed over time, and conducting gender and other theoretical studies. Among the holdings of the West Chester University Special Collections is a copy of fifteenth-century French chronicler Enguerrand de Monstrelet’s Chroniques de France, an account of the Hundred Years’ War between France and England. Several print editions of this text were published in France in the sixteenth century, but there are fewer than thirty known copies of the WCU library’s edition, which was published in 1512. Through an examination of our copy’s fascinating unique features and signs of ownership, this presentation aims to contribute to the limited scholarship on Monstrelet’s surviving printed books. This article examines whether teaching with primary sources can cultivate civic engagement by investigating the competencies involved in developing student civic engagement and aligning these with outcomes from teaching with primary sources. Using three examples from Brooklyn Connections, a primary source-based education outreach program that offers a free standards-based and curriculum-aligned school partnership program for grades four through twelve, this case study illustrates the potential for using primary sources to cultivate skills, knowledge, and student agency. A 1997 special report in Scientific American claimed that the average lifespan of a website was only 44 days. A study in 2001 put that at 75 days, while a 2003 article indicated 100 days. This document provides background information to the Finding Aid to the Cunningham Collection. Dr Kenneth Stewart Cunningham (1890 – 1976) was a leading Australian educationalist and educational researcher who was instrumental in the creation and development of the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER). After his death in 1976, Dr Cunningham’s daughter, Lesley Cunningham, became the custodian of her father’s personal papers. Much of this material was donated to the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER) by Lesley Cunningham a few years before her death.

This is a finding aid to the first box accessioned as part of the Cunningham Collection. The collection contains papers, documents, photographs, films, and ephemera pertaining to Dr Cunningham’s personal and professional life, as well as a few items from his wife, Ella, and daughter, Lesley.
