Static Interaction Of Black Holes In 1+1 Dimensions, Philip Greenwood 2014 California Polytechnic State University - San Luis Obispo

Static Interaction Of Black Holes In 1+1 Dimensions, Philip Greenwood

Physics

We consider a version of general relativity in two spacetime dimensions, and

study a solution describing two static black holes in the presence of a cosmological

constant. We first analytically find an embedding diagram to visualize the geometry

outside the black holes. We then examine how the two black holes must be

interacting to remain static. Our main result is to show how the black holes behave

effectively like two electric charges. This charge model exhibits both attraction and

repulsion, which evidently balance and moreover are localized in different regions

of space. We also begin an investigation of the black …

The Galaxy And Mass Assembly (GAMA) survey has obtained spectra of over 230 000 targets using the Anglo-Australian Telescope. To homogenize the redshift measurements and improve the reliability, a fully automatic redshift code was developed (autoz). The measurements were made using a cross-correlation method for both the absorption- and the emission-line spectra. Large deviations in the high-pass-filtered spectra are partially clipped in order to be robust against uncorrected artefacts and to reduce the weight given to single-line matches. A single figure of merit (FOM) was developed that puts all template matches on to a similar confidence scale. The redshift confidence …

We present the results of a search for gravitational waves associated with 223 γ-ray bursts (GRBs) detected by the InterPlanetary Network (IPN) in 2005–2010 during LIGO’s fifth and sixth science runs and Virgo’s first, second, and third science runs. The IPN satellites provide accurate times of the bursts and sky localizations that vary significantly from degree scale to hundreds of square degrees. We search for both a well-modeled binary coalescence signal, the favored progenitor model for short GRBs, and for generic, unmodeled gravitational wave bursts. Both searches use the event time and sky localization to improve the gravitational wave search …

Constraints Of The Radio-Loud/Radio-Quiet Dichotomy From The Fundamental Plane, David Garofalo, Matthew I. Kim, Damian J. Christian 2014 Kennesaw State University

Constraints Of The Radio-Loud/Radio-Quiet Dichotomy From The Fundamental Plane, David Garofalo, Matthew I. Kim, Damian J. Christian

Faculty Articles

The Fundamental Plane for black hole activity constitutes a tight correlation between jet power, X-ray luminosity, and black hole mass. Under the assumption that a Blandford–Znajek-type mechanism, which relies on black hole spin, contributes non-negligibly to jet production, the sufficiently small scatter in the Fundamental Plane shows that black hole spin differences of |Δa| ∼ 1 are not typical among the active galactic nuclei population. If – as it seems – radio-loud and radio-quiet objects are both faithful to the Fundamental Plane, models of black hole accretion in which the radio-loud/radio-quiet dichotomy is based on a spin dichotomy of a∼1/a∼0, …

Early-Type Galaxies In The Chandra Cosmos Survey, F. Civano, G. Fabbiano, S. Pellegrini, D.-W. Kim

Dartmouth Scholarship

We study a sample of 69 X-ray detected early-type galaxies (ETGs), selected from the Chandra COSMOS survey, to explore the relation between the X-ray luminosity of hot gaseous halos (L X, gas) and the integrated stellar luminosity (LK ) of the galaxies, in a range of redshift extending out to z = 1.5. In the local universe, a tight, steep relationship has been established between these two quantities, suggesting the presence of largely virialized halos in X-ray luminous systems. We use well-established relations from the study of local universe ETGs, together with the expected evolution …

We have embedded a voltage-biased Cooper-pair transistor (CPT) in a high-Q superconducting microwave cavity. When the energy given to a tunneling Cooper pair by the voltage bias is equal to a multiple of the cavity photon frequency, the cavity is pumped to a strongly nonequilibrium state. The cavity photons act back on the CPT, allowing us to enter a regime of strongly correlated electronic-photonic transport. We directly observe the effects of photonic backaction on Cooper-pair transport, and see clear evidence for single-emitter lasing in the form of emission dominated by stimulated transport processes.

In this paper we report on a search for short-duration gravitational wave bursts in the frequency range 64 Hz–1792 Hz associated with gamma-ray bursts (GRBs), using data from GEO 600 and one of the LIGO or Virgo detectors. We introduce the method of a linear search grid to analyze GRB events with large sky localization uncertainties, for example the localizations provided by the Fermi Gamma-ray Burst Monitor (GBM). Coherent searches for gravitational waves (GWs) can be computationally intensive when the GRB sky position is not well localized, due to the corrections required for the difference in arrival time between detectors. …

Effects Of Ionospheric Damping On Mhd Wave Mode Structure, D. -H. Lee, K. -H. Kim, R. E. Denton, K. Takahashi 2014 Kyung Hee University, South Korea

Effects Of Ionospheric Damping On Mhd Wave Mode Structure, D. -H. Lee, K. -H. Kim, R. E. Denton, K. Takahashi

Dartmouth Scholarship

We calculate the mode structure of magnetospheric MHD waves on a meridional plane. We have added the effect of ionospheric dissipation to the three-dimensional dipole field MHD model of Lee and Lysak (1999); this model allows a realistic Alfven speed profile for the plasmasphere and realistic boundary conditions at the outer boundaries that vary with respect to local time. Using power spectra and plots of spatial mode structure, we show that the two-dimensional transverse modes on the dipolar meridian are strongly affected by ionospheric damping, but the compressional modes are not. The location of field line resonances spreads wide as …

Precision radial velocities from the Automated Planet Finder (APF) and Keck/HIRES reveal an Msin (i) = 18 ± 2 M⊕ planet orbiting the nearby M3V star GJ 687. This planet has an orbital period P = 38.14 days and a low orbital eccentricity. Our Strömgren b and y photometry of the host star suggests a stellar rotation signature with a period of P = 60 days. The star is somewhat chromospherically active, with a spot filling factor estimated to be several percent. The rotationally induced 60 day signal, however, is well separated from the period of the radial velocity variations, …

Reconstructing The Stellar Mass Distributions Of Galaxies Using S4g Irac 3.6 And 4.5 Μm Images. Ii. The Conversion From Light To Mass, Sharon E. Meidt, Trisha F. Mizusawa

Aerospace, Physics, and Space Science Faculty Publications

We present a new approach for estimating the 3.6 μm stellar mass-to- light (M/L) ratio Υ3.6 in terms of the [3.6]-[4.5] colors of old stellar populations. Our approach avoids several of the largest sources of uncertainty in existing techniques using population synthesis models. By focusing on mid-IR wavelengths, we gain a virtually dust extinction-free tracer of the old stars, avoiding the need to adopt a dust model to correctly interpret optical or optical/near-IR colors normally leveraged to assign the mass-to-light ratio Υ. By calibrating a new relation between near-IR and mid-IR colors of giant stars observed in GLIMPSE we also …

Co-Orbiting Planes Of Sub-Halos Are Similarly Unlikely Around Paired And Isolated Hosts, Marcel S. Pawlowski, Stacy S. McGaugh 2014 Case Western Reserve University

Co-Orbiting Planes Of Sub-Halos Are Similarly Unlikely Around Paired And Isolated Hosts, Marcel S. Pawlowski, Stacy S. Mcgaugh

Faculty Scholarship

Sub-halos in dark-matter-based cosmological simulations tend to be distributed approximately isotropically around their host. The existence of highly flattened, co-orbiting planes of satellite galaxies has therefore been identified as a possible problem for these cosmological models, but so far studies have not considered the hosts' environments. That satellite planes are now known around both major galaxies in the Local Group raises the question whether they are more likely to be found around paired hosts. In a first attempt to investigate this possibility, we focus on the flattening and orbital coherence of the 11 brightest satellite galaxies of the vast polar …

Superdiffusion Revisited In View Of Collisionless Reconnection, R. A. Treumann, W. Baumjohann 2014 Dartmouth College

Superdiffusion Revisited In View Of Collisionless Reconnection, R. A. Treumann, W. Baumjohann

Dartmouth Scholarship

The concept of diffusion in collisionless space plasmas like those near the magnetopause and in the geomagnetic tail during reconnection is reexamined making use of the division of particle orbits into waiting orbits and break-outs into ballistic motion lying at the bottom, for instance, of Lévy flights. The rms average displacement in this case increases with time, describing superdiffusion, though faster than classical, is still a weak process, being however strong enough to support fast reconnection. Referring to two kinds of numerical particle-in-cell simulations we determine the anomalous diffusion coefficient, the anomalous collision frequency on which the diffusion process is …

Magnetic Inhibition Of Convection And The Fundamental Properties Of Low-Mass Stars. Ii. Fully Convective Main-Sequence Stars, Gregory A. Feiden, Brian Chaboyer

Dartmouth Scholarship

We examine the hypothesis that magnetic fields are inflating the radii of fully convective main-sequence stars in detached eclipsing binaries (DEBs). The magnetic Dartmouth stellar evolution code is used to analyze two systems in particular: Kepler-16 and CM Draconis. Magneto-convection is treated assuming stabilization of convection and also by assuming reductions in convective efficiency due to a turbulent dynamo. We find that magnetic stellar models are unable to reproduce the properties of inflated fully convective main-sequence stars, unless strong interior magnetic fields in excess of 10 MG are present. Validation of the magnetic field hypothesis given the current generation of …

Search For Gravitational Radiation From Intermediate Mass Black Hole Binaries In Data From The Second Ligo-Virgo Joint Science Run, Tiffany Summerscales, Ligo Scientific Collaboration And Virgo Collaboration

Faculty Publications

This paper reports on an unmodeled, all-sky search for gravitational waves from merging intermediate mass black hole binaries (IMBHB). The search was performed on data from the second joint science run of the LIGO and Virgo detectors (July 2009–October 2010) and was sensitive to IMBHBs with a range up to ∼200  Mpc, averaged over the possible sky positions and inclinations of the binaries with respect to the line of sight. No significant candidate was found. Upper limits on the coalescence-rate density of nonspinning IMBHBs with total masses between 100 and 450  M⊙ and mass ratios between 0.25 and 1 were …

We present the results of 45 transit observations obtained for the transiting exoplanet HAT-P-32b. The transits have been observed using several telescopes mainly throughout the YETI (Young Exoplanet Transit Initiative) network. In 25 cases, complete transit light curves with a timing precision better than 1.4 min have been obtained. These light curves have been used to refine the system properties, namely inclination i, planet-to-star radius ratio Rp/Rs, and the ratio between the semimajor axis and the stellar radius a/Rs. First analyses by Hartman et al. suggests the existence of a second planet in the system, thus we tried to find …

The Herschel very wide field surveys have charted hundreds of square degrees in multiple far-IR (FIR) bands. While the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) is currently the best resource for optical counterpart identifications over such wide areas, it does not detect a large number of Herschel FIR sources and leaves their nature undetermined. As a test case, we studied seven "SDSS-invisible," very bright 250 μm sources (S 250 > 55 mJy) in the Cosmic Assembly Near-infrared Deep Extragalactic Legacy Survey fields where we have a rich multi-wavelength data set. We took a new approach to decompose the FIR sources, using …

Cosmic Sound In The Lyman Alpha Forest, Spencer Everett, Matt Kwiecien, Cordell Newmiller

DePaul Discoveries

Using the Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (BOSS) from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS), the authors attempt to detect the baryonic acoustic oscillations (BAOs) using the discrete wavelet transform. The wavelet transform is used to construct the power spectrum of intergalactic clouds of matter at large (Mpc) distance scales. It was found that the wavelet transform used here does not have high enough resolution to detect the BAOs. However, the techniques used in this study allow for future improvements in the transform that could potentially resolve the expected peak in the power spectrum and indicate the existence of BAOs.
