Dynamical Instability And Its Implications For Planetary System Architecture, Dong-Hong Wu, Rachel C. Zang, Ji-Lin Zhou, Jason H. Steffen

Physics & Astronomy Faculty Research

We examine the effects that dynamical instability has on shaping the orbital properties of exoplanetary systems. Using N-body simulations of non-EMS (Equal Mutual Separation), multiplanet systems we find that the lower limit of the instability time-scale t is determined by the minimal mutual separation Kmin in units of the mutual Hill radius. Planetary systems showing instability generally include planet pairs with period ratio... (See abstract in article).

Kinematic Links And The Coevolution Of Mhd Winds, Jets, And Inner Disks From A High-Resolution Optical [Oi] Survey, Andrea Banzatti, Ilaria Pascucci, Suzan Edwards, Min Fang, Uma Gorti, Mario Flock 2019 University of Arizona

Kinematic Links And The Coevolution Of Mhd Winds, Jets, And Inner Disks From A High-Resolution Optical [Oi] Survey, Andrea Banzatti, Ilaria Pascucci, Suzan Edwards, Min Fang, Uma Gorti, Mario Flock

Astronomy: Faculty Publications

We present a survey of optical [O I] emission at 6300 Å toward 65 T Tauri stars at the spectral resolution of ∼7 km s−1 . Past work identified a highly blueshifted velocity component (HVC) tracing microjets and a less blueshifted low-velocity component (LVC) attributed to winds. We focus here on the LVC kinematics to investigate links between winds, jets, accretion, and disk dispersal. We track the behavior of four types of LVC components: a broad and a narrow component (“BC” and “NC,” respectively) in LVCs that are decomposed into two Gaussians which typically have an HVC, and single-Gaussian LVC …

Astrophysical sources of gravitational waves, such as binary neutron star and black hole mergers or core-collapse supernovae, can drive relativistic outflows, giving rise to non-thermal high-energy emission. High-energy neutrinos are signatures of such outflows. The detection of gravitational waves and high-energy neutrinos from common sources could help establish the connection between the dynamics of the progenitor and the properties of the outflow. We searched for associated emission of gravitational waves and high-energy neutrinos from astrophysical transients with minimal assumptions using data from Advanced LIGO from its first observing run O1, and data from the Antares and IceCube neutrino observatories from …

Electron Density Topological And Adsorbate Orbital Analyses Of Water And Carbon Monoxide Co-Adsorption On Platinum, Nicholas Dimakis, Isaiah Salas, Luis Gonzalez, Neili Loupe, Eugene S. Smotkin

Physics & Astronomy Faculty Publications

The electron density topology of carbon monoxide (CO) on dry and hydrated platinum is evaluated under the quantum theory of atoms in molecules (QTAIM) and by adsorbate orbital approaches. The impact of water co-adsorbate on the electronic, structural, and vibrational properties of CO on Pt are modelled by periodic density functional theory (DFT). At low CO coverage, increased hydration weakens C-O bonds and strengthens C-Pt bonds, as verified by changes in bond lengths and stretching frequencies. These results are consistent with QTAIM, the 5σ donation-2π∗ backdonation model, and our extended Ï€-attraction σ-repulsion model (extended Ï€-σ model). This work links changes …

We report on neutral hydrogen (H I) observations of the NGC 7232 group with the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder (ASKAP). These observations were conducted as part of the Wide-field ASKAP L-Band Legacy All-sky Blind surveY (WALLABY) Early Science program with an array of 12 ASKAP antennas equipped with Phased Array Feeds, which were used to form 36 beams to map a field of view of 30 deg2. Analysing a subregion of the central beams, we detect 17 H I sources. Eleven of these detections are identified as galaxies and have stellar counterparts, of which five are newly resolved H …

Analytic Modeling Of Eccentric Binary Black Holes : From Inspiral To Merger, Dillon Paige Buskirk 2019 Marshall University

Analytic Modeling Of Eccentric Binary Black Holes : From Inspiral To Merger, Dillon Paige Buskirk

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

The orbital evolution of black hole binaries is described by two main phases: the inspiral and the merger. Using the post-Newtonian (PN) theory for the inspiral phase of the binary, we build up a Mathematica script to obtain strain waveforms for the inspiral. We expand our previous inspiral formulation to include eccentric orbits, which greatly complicates the calculations. Since this model breaks down as the two bodies approach merger, a separate model for the merger and ring-down is required. This part of the evolution is highly non-linear and numerical relativity (NR) is required to simulate this problem. However, this is …

Gwtc-1: A Gravitational-Wave Transient Catalog Of Compact Binary Mergers Observed By Ligo And Virgo During The First And Second Observing Runs, B. P. Abbott

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

We present the results from three gravitational-wave searches for coalescing compact binaries with component masses above 1 M⊙ during the first and second observing runs of the advanced gravitationalwave detector network. During the first observing run (O1), from September 12, 2015 to January 19, 2016, gravitational waves from three binary black hole mergers were detected. The second observing run (O2), which ran from November 30, 2016 to August 25, 2017, saw the first detection of gravitational waves from a binary neutron star inspiral, in addition to the observation of gravitational waves from a total of seven binary black hole mergers, …

The Dark Sky Character Of Archaeological Landscapes: Cultural Meaning And Conservation Strategies, Frank Prendergast 2019 Technological University Dublin

The Dark Sky Character Of Archaeological Landscapes: Cultural Meaning And Conservation Strategies, Frank Prendergast

Book/Book Chapter

This paper presents the first ever study of light pollution at selected Irish prehistoric archaeological landscapes. The concepts of cosmology and landscape are first briefly described and followed by a summary of early human settlement of the island. Building on this, the extant corpus of early prehistoric megalithic burial tombs is illustrated to show their contrasting distribution patterns and typology. Analysis of tomb locations using nearest-neighbour statistical methods reveals evidence of intentional clustering. Further geo-statistical analysis identifies the geographical locations and the density ranking of these nucleated clusters - a feature especially evident in the passage tomb tradition on this …

Principal Component Analysis Of The Magnetic Transition In The Three-Dimensional Fermi-Hubbard Model, Ehsan Khatami 2019 San Jose State University

Principal Component Analysis Of The Magnetic Transition In The Three-Dimensional Fermi-Hubbard Model, Ehsan Khatami

Faculty Publications

Machine learning techniques have been widely used in the study of strongly correlated systems in recent years. Here, we review some applications to classical and quantum many-body systems and present results from an unsupervised machine learning technique, the principal component analysis, employed to identify the finite-temperature phase transition of the three-dimensional Fermi-Hubbard model to the antiferromagnetically ordered state. We find that this linear method can capture the phase transition as well as other more complicated and nonlinear counterparts.

Spacetime Groups, Ian M. Anderson, Charles G. Torre 2019 [email protected]

Spacetime Groups, Ian M. Anderson, Charles G. Torre

Publications

A spacetime group is a connected 4-dimensional Lie group G endowed with a left invariant Lorentz metric h and such that the connected component of the isometry group of h is G itself. The Newman-Penrose formalism is used to give an algebraic classification of spacetime groups, that is, we determine a complete list of inequivalent spacetime Lie algebras, which are pairs (g,η), with g being a 4-dimensional Lie algebra and η being a Lorentzian inner product on g. A full analysis of the equivalence problem for spacetime Lie algebras is given which leads to a completely algorithmic solution to the …
