A Coupled Localized Rbf Meshless/Drbem Formulation For Accurate Modeling Of Incompressible Fluid Flows, Leonardo Bueno, Eduardo Divo, Alain J. Kassab 2017 Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University

A Coupled Localized Rbf Meshless/Drbem Formulation For Accurate Modeling Of Incompressible Fluid Flows, Leonardo Bueno, Eduardo Divo, Alain J. Kassab

Publications

Velocity-pressure coupling schemes for the solution of incompressible fluid flow problems in Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) rely on the formulation of Poisson-like equations through projection methods. The solution of these Poisson-like equations represent the pressure correction and the velocity correction to ensure proper satisfaction of the conservation of mass equation at each step of a time-marching scheme or at each level of an iteration process. Inaccurate solutions of these Poisson-like equations result in meaningless instantaneous or intermediate approximations that do not represent the proper time-accurate behavior of the flow. The fact that these equations must be solved to convergence at …

An Rbf Interpolation Blending Scheme For Effective Shock-Capturing, M. Harris, Eduardo Divo, Alain J. Kassab 2017 University of Central Florida

An Rbf Interpolation Blending Scheme For Effective Shock-Capturing, M. Harris, Eduardo Divo, Alain J. Kassab

Publications

In recent years significant focus has been given to the study of Radial basis functions (RBF), especially in their use on solving partial differential equations (PDE). RBF have an impressive capability of inter- polating scattered data, even when this data presents localized discontinuities. However, for infinitely smooth RBF such as the Multiquadrics, inverse Multiquadrics, and Gaussian, the shape parameter must be chosen properly to obtain accurate approximations while avoiding ill-conditioning of the interpolating matrices. The optimum shape parameter can vary significantly depending on the field, particularly in locations of steep gradients, shocks, or discontinuities. Typically, the shape parameter is chosen …

High Performance Techniques Applied In Partial Differential Equations Library, Shilei Lin

All College Thesis Program, 2016-2019

This thesis explores various Trilinos packages to determine a method for updating the deal.ii library, which specializes in solving partial differential equations by finite element methods. It begins with introducing related concepts and general goals, followed by exploring computational and mathematical methods which are analytical solutions of one-dimensional Boussinesq equations and developing newer prototypes for solvers in deal.ii based on Trilinos packages. After demonstrating the methods, it indicates the reducing solving time in newer prototypes. Based on results from the prototype, similar methods are applied to update the deal.ii library. In the end, a testing program is exploited to demonstrate …

Hamiltonian Model For Coupled Surface And Internal Waves In The Presence Of Currents, Rossen Ivanov 2017 Technological University Dublin

Hamiltonian Model For Coupled Surface And Internal Waves In The Presence Of Currents, Rossen Ivanov

Articles

We examine a two dimensional fluid system consisting of a lower medium bounded underneath by a flatbed and an upper medium with a free surface. The two media are separated by a free common interface. The gravity driven surface and internal water waves (at the common interface between the media) in the presence of a depth-dependent current are studied under certain physical assumptions. Both media are considered incompressible and with prescribed vorticities. Using the Hamiltonian approach the Hamiltonian of the system is constructed in terms of ’wave’ variables and the equations of motion are calculated. The resultant equations of motion …

Kinetic Monte Carlo Methods For Computing First Capture Time Distributions In Models Of Diffusive Absorption, Daniel Schmidt 2017 Harvey Mudd College

Kinetic Monte Carlo Methods For Computing First Capture Time Distributions In Models Of Diffusive Absorption, Daniel Schmidt

HMC Senior Theses

In this paper, we consider the capture dynamics of a particle undergoing a random walk above a sheet of absorbing traps. In particular, we seek to characterize the distribution in time from when the particle is released to when it is absorbed. This problem is motivated by the study of lymphocytes in the human blood stream; for a particle near the surface of a lymphocyte, how long will it take for the particle to be captured? We model this problem as a diffusive process with a mixture of reflecting and absorbing boundary conditions. The model is analyzed from two approaches. …

Eigenvalue Dependence Of Numerical Oscillations In Parabolic Partial Differential Equations, R. Corban Harwood 2017 George Fox University

Eigenvalue Dependence Of Numerical Oscillations In Parabolic Partial Differential Equations, R. Corban Harwood

Faculty Publications - Department of Mathematics

This paper investigates oscillation-free stability conditions of numerical methods for linear parabolic partial differential equations with some example extrapolations to nonlinear equations. Not clearly understood, numerical oscillations can create infeasible results. Since oscillation-free behavior is not ensured by stability conditions, a more precise condition would be useful for accurate solutions. Using Von Neumann and spectral analyses, we find and explore oscillation-free conditions for several finite difference schemes. Further relationships between oscillatory behavior and eigenvalues is supported with numerical evidence and proof. Also, evidence suggests that the oscillation-free stability condition for a consistent linearization may be sufficient to provide oscillation-free stability …

Steady And Stable: Numerical Investigations Of Nonlinear Partial Differential Equations, R. Corban Harwood 2017 George Fox University

Steady And Stable: Numerical Investigations Of Nonlinear Partial Differential Equations, R. Corban Harwood

Faculty Publications - Department of Mathematics

Excerpt: "Mathematics is a language which can describe patterns in everyday life as well as abstract concepts existing only in our minds. Patterns exist in data, functions, and sets constructed around a common theme, but the most tangible patterns are visual. Visual demonstrations can help undergraduate students connect to abstract concepts in advanced mathematical courses. The study of partial differential equations, in particular, benefits from numerical analysis and simulation."

The Bessel Function, The Hankel Transform And An Application To Differential Equations, Isaac C. Voegtle

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

In this thesis we explore the properties of Bessel functions. Of interest is how they can be applied to partial differential equations using the Hankel transform. We use an example in two dimensions to demonstrate the properties at work as well as formulate thoughts on how to take the results further.

A Numerical Study Of Construction Of Honey Bee Comb, Pamela Guerrero, Pamela C. Guerrero 2017 Murray State University

A Numerical Study Of Construction Of Honey Bee Comb, Pamela Guerrero, Pamela C. Guerrero

Murray State Theses and Dissertations

We use finite difference methods in the treatment of an existing system of partial differential equations that captures the dynamics of parallel honeycomb construction in a bee hive. We conduct an uncertainty analysis by calculating the partial rank correlation coefficient for the parameters to find which are most important to the outcomes of the model. We then use an eFAST method to determine both the individual and total sensitivity index for the parameters. Afterwards we examine our numerical model under varying initial conditions and parameter values, and compare ratios found from local data with the golden mean by fitting images …

Orbital Stability Results For Soliton Solutions To Nonlinear Schrödinger Equations With External Potentials, Joseph B. Lindgren 2017 University of Kentucky

Orbital Stability Results For Soliton Solutions To Nonlinear Schrödinger Equations With External Potentials, Joseph B. Lindgren

Theses and Dissertations--Mathematics

For certain nonlinear Schroedinger equations there exist solutions which are called solitary waves. Addition of a potential $V$ changes the dynamics, but for small enough $||V||_{L^\infty}$ we can still obtain stability (and approximately Newtonian motion of the solitary wave's center of mass) for soliton-like solutions up to a finite time that depends on the size and scale of the potential $V$. Our method is an adaptation of the well-known Lyapunov method.

For the sake of completeness, we also prove long-time stability of traveling solitons in the case $V=0$.

Theses and Dissertations--Mathematics

We study the Cauchy problem of the derivative nonlinear Schrodinger equation in one space dimension. Using the method of inverse scattering, we prove global well-posedness of the derivative nonlinear Schrodinger equation for initial conditions in a dense and open subset of weighted Sobolev space that can support bright solitons.

A Physics-Based Approach To Modeling Wildland Fire Spread Through Porous Fuel Beds, Tingting Tang 2017 University of Kentucky

A Physics-Based Approach To Modeling Wildland Fire Spread Through Porous Fuel Beds, Tingting Tang

Theses and Dissertations--Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering

Wildfires are becoming increasingly erratic nowadays at least in part because of climate change. CFD (computational fluid dynamics)-based models with the potential of simulating extreme behaviors are gaining increasing attention as a means to predict such behavior in order to aid firefighting efforts. This dissertation describes a wildfire model based on the current understanding of wildfire physics. The model includes physics of turbulence, inhomogeneous porous fuel beds, heat release, ignition, and firebrands. A discrete dynamical system for flow in porous media is derived and incorporated into the subgrid-scale model for synthetic-velocity large-eddy simulation (LES), and a general porosity-permeability model is …

A Wasserstein Gradient Flow Approach To Poisson-Nernst-Planck Equations, David Kinderlehrer, Leinard Monsaingeon, Xiang Xu 2017 Old Dominion University

A Wasserstein Gradient Flow Approach To Poisson-Nernst-Planck Equations, David Kinderlehrer, Leinard Monsaingeon, Xiang Xu

Mathematics & Statistics Faculty Publications

The Poisson-Nernst-Planck system of equations used to model ionic transport is interpreted as a gradient flow for the Wasserstein distance and a free energy in the space of probability measures with finite second moment. A variational scheme is then set up and is the starting point of the construction of global weak solutions in a unified framework for the cases of both linear and non-linear diffusion. The proof of the main results relies on the derivation of additional estimates based on the flow interchange technique developed by Matthes et al. in [D. Matthes, R.J. McCann and G. Savare, Commun. Partial …

Direct Sampling Methods For Inverse Scattering Problems, Ala Mahmood Nahar Al Zaalig 2017 Michigan Technological University

Direct Sampling Methods For Inverse Scattering Problems, Ala Mahmood Nahar Al Zaalig

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

Recently, direct sampling methods became popular for solving inverse scattering problems to estimate the shape of the scattering object. They provide a simple tool to directly reconstruct the shape of the unknown scatterer. These methods are based on choosing an appropriate indicator function f on Rd, d=2 or 3, such that f(z) decides whether z lies inside or outside the scatterer. Consequently, we can determine the location and the shape of the unknown scatterer.

In this thesis, we first present some sampling methods for shape reconstruction in inverse scattering problems. These methods, which are described in Chapter 1, …

Computational Fluid Dynamics In A Terminal Alveolated Bronchiole Duct With Expanding Walls: Proof-Of-Concept In Openfoam, Jeremy Myers 2017 Virginia Commonwealth University

Computational Fluid Dynamics In A Terminal Alveolated Bronchiole Duct With Expanding Walls: Proof-Of-Concept In Openfoam, Jeremy Myers

Theses and Dissertations

Mathematical Biology has found recent success applying Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) to model airflow in the human lung. Detailed modeling of flow patterns in the alveoli, where the oxygen-carbon dioxide gas exchange occurs, has provided data that is useful in treating illnesses and designing drug-delivery systems. Unfortunately, many CFD software packages have high licensing fees that are out of reach for independent researchers. This thesis uses three open-source software packages, Gmsh, OpenFOAM, and ParaView, to design a mesh, create a simulation, and visualize the results of an idealized terminal alveolar sac model. This model successfully demonstrates that OpenFOAM can be …

Series Solutions Of Polarized Gowdy Universes, Doniray Brusaferro 2017 Virginia Commonwealth University

Series Solutions Of Polarized Gowdy Universes, Doniray Brusaferro

Theses and Dissertations

Einstein's field equations are a system of ten partial differential equations. For a special class of spacetimes known as Gowdy spacetimes, the number of equations is reduced due to additional structure of two dimensional isometry groups with mutually orthogonal Killing vectors. In this thesis, we focus on a particular model of Gowdy spacetimes known as the polarized T3 model, and provide an explicit solution to Einstein's equations.

Multi-Scale Cardiovascular Flow Analysis By An Integrated Meshless-Lumped Parameter Model, Leonardo A. Bueno, Eduardo A. Divo, Alain J. Kassab

Publications

A computational tool that integrates a Radial basis function (RBF)-based Meshless solver with a Lumped Parameter model (LPM) is developed to analyze the multi-scale and multi-physics interaction between the cardiovascular flow hemodynamics, the cardiac function, and the peripheral circulation. The Meshless solver is based on localized RBF collocations at scattered data points which allows for automation of the model generation via CAD integration. The time-accurate incompressible flow hemodynamics are addressed via a pressure-velocity correction scheme where the ensuing Poisson equations are accurately and efficiently solved at each time step by a Dual-Reciprocity Boundary Element method (DRBEM) formulation that takes advantage …

A Numerical Scheme For Generalized Fractional Optimal Control Problems, N. Singha, C. Nahak 2016 Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur

A Numerical Scheme For Generalized Fractional Optimal Control Problems, N. Singha, C. Nahak

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

This paper introduces a generalization of the Fractional Optimal Control Problem (GFOCP). Proposed generalizations differ in terms of explaining the constraint involved in the dynamical system of the control problem. We assume the constraint as an arbitrary function of fractional derivatives and fractional integrals. By this assumption the restriction on constraint, to be of some prescribed function of fractional operators, is removed. Deduction of necessary optimality conditions followed by particular cases and examples has been provided. Additionally, we construct a solution scheme for the suggested class of (GFOCP)’s. The formulation of this scheme is done by implementing the Adomian decomposition …

Heat Source Thermoelastic Problem In A Hollow Elliptic Cylinder Under Time-Reversal Principle, Pravin Bhad, Vinod Varghese, Lalsingh Khalsa

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

The article investigates the time-reversal thermoelasticity of a hollow elliptical cylinder for determining the temperature distribution and its associated thermal stresses at a certain point using integral transform techniques by unifying classical orthogonal polynomials as the kernel. Furthermore, by considering a circle as a special kind of ellipse, it is seen that the temperature distribution and the comparative study of a circular cylinder can be derived as a special case from the present mathematical solution. The numerical results obtained are accurate enough for practical purposes.
