The Mceliece Cryptosystem As A Solution To The Post-Quantum Cryptographic Problem, Isaac Hanna 2023 Liberty University

The Mceliece Cryptosystem As A Solution To The Post-Quantum Cryptographic Problem, Isaac Hanna

Senior Honors Theses

The ability to communicate securely across the internet is owing to the security of the RSA cryptosystem, among others. This cryptosystem relies on the difficulty of integer factorization to provide secure communication. Peter Shor’s quantum integer factorization algorithm threatens to upend this. A special case of the hidden subgroup problem, the algorithm provides an exponential speedup in the integer factorization problem, destroying RSA’s security. Robert McEliece’s cryptosystem has been proposed as an alternative. Based upon binary Goppa codes instead of integer factorization, his cryptosystem uses code scrambling and error introduction to hinder decrypting a message without the private key. This …

Stability Properties Of A System Of Receptors In The Presence Of Attractive Domains, Basim Mohammed Al-Maliki 2023 West Virginia University

Stability Properties Of A System Of Receptors In The Presence Of Attractive Domains, Basim Mohammed Al-Maliki

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

I use mathematical modeling to understand aspects of molecular processes in living cells. Specifically, we look at the first few steps in cell signaling. Signal initiation requires that receptors located on the cell membrane bind together to form dimers. Microscopic imaging of receptors on the cell membrane revealed that receptors tend to accumulate in small areas (clusters). Studies also show that the membrane has a complex landscape consisting of domains and barriers of various origin.

Here we study the way receptor dimerization is influenced by domains on the cell membrane. Our underlying hypothesis is that the physical and chemical properties …

Feature Extraction Of Footwear Impression Images For Quality Assessment, Alexandra Hill 2023 West Virginia University

Feature Extraction Of Footwear Impression Images For Quality Assessment, Alexandra Hill

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Forensic footwear impression analysis is a valuable tool in criminal investigations. Extracting useful features from images of footwear impressions is a critical step in this process. However, the quality of these images can vary widely, making feature extraction challenging. In order to give a quality assessment rating to a footwear impression image, the image should first be analyzed to extract features from the impression. In this paper, we present a method to extract features from a 2D grayscale footwear impression image. A Hierarchical Grid Model implementation has been adapted from use on a 3D dataset to assist in finding features, …

Analysis Of Localization Algorithms For Wireless Sensor Networks Using Binary Data, Alexander Joseph Hart 2023 Northern Illinois University

Analysis Of Localization Algorithms For Wireless Sensor Networks Using Binary Data, Alexander Joseph Hart

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

The detection, localization, and tracking of environmental and physical conditions can be accomplished using wireless sensor networks (WSNs). Recent advancements in sensors, processors, and wireless communications have improved the quality and acquisition speed of data in WSNs. However, the data gathered by a WSN is inherently random due to component and environmental variations. Thus, statistical signal processing algorithms are needed to analyze the random data in a robust way. Though many algorithms for the analysis of random data are established and available, they are problem-specific and must be adapted to the application. This thesis provides an analysis of established localization …

Longitudinal Sport Science Implementation In American Collegiate Men’S Basketball, Jason Stone 2023 West Virginia University

Longitudinal Sport Science Implementation In American Collegiate Men’S Basketball, Jason Stone

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The expanding opportunities to implement sport science frameworks in elite-level basketball environments coincide with the sport’s increasing global prominence. Concomitant to these opportunities is the continual growth of the sport technology market (e.g., wearables, force plates) and computational power (e.g., data management tools, coding capabilities), which yields solutions and challenges for both athletes and practitioners. Due to the rapid influx of new sport technologies in high performance environments, particularly American Collegiate Men’s Basketball, more formal and ecologically valid research on how to effectively utilize data derived from them, particularly over long periods of time (i.e., multiple seasons) is needed. To …

Moment-Based Reinforcement Learning For Ensemble Control, Yao-Chi Yu, Vignesh Narayanan, Jr-Shin Li 2023 Washington University in St. Louis

Moment-Based Reinforcement Learning For Ensemble Control, Yao-Chi Yu, Vignesh Narayanan, Jr-Shin Li

Publications

Problems involving controlling the collective behavior of a population of structurally similar dynamical systems, the so-called ensemble control, arise in diverse emerging applications and pose a grand challenge in systems science and control engineering. Owing to the severely under-actuated nature and the difficulty of placing large-scale sensor networks, ensemble systems are limited to being actuated and monitored at the population level. Moreover, mathematical models describing the dynamics of ensemble systems are often elusive. Therefore, it is essential to design broadcast controls that excite the entire population in such a way that the heterogeneity in system dynamics are robustly compensated. In …

Enhancing Control Room Operator Decision Making: An Application Of Dynamic Influence Diagrams In Formaldehyde Manufacturing, Joseph Mietkiewicz, Anders L. Madsen 2023 Aalborg University, Denmark

Enhancing Control Room Operator Decision Making: An Application Of Dynamic Influence Diagrams In Formaldehyde Manufacturing, Joseph Mietkiewicz, Anders L. Madsen

Articles

Intoday’s rapidly evolving industrial landscape, control room operators must grapple with an ever-growing array of tasks and respon sibilities. One major challenge facing these operators is the potential for task overload, which can lead to decision fatigue and increased reliance on cognitive biases. To address this issue, we propose the use of dynamic influence diagrams (DID) as the core of our decision support system. By monitoring the process over time and identifying anomalies, DIDs can recommend the most effective course of action based on a probabilistic assessment of future outcomes. Instead of letting the operator choose or search for the …

Innovations In Drop Shape Analysis Using Deep Learning And Solving The Young-Laplace Equation For An Axisymmetric Pendant Drop, Andres P. Hyer 2023 Virginia Commonwealth University

Innovations In Drop Shape Analysis Using Deep Learning And Solving The Young-Laplace Equation For An Axisymmetric Pendant Drop, Andres P. Hyer

Theses and Dissertations

Axisymmetric Drop Shape Analysis (ADSA) is a technique commonly used to determine surface or interfacial tension. Applications of traditional ASDA methods to process analytical technologies are limited by computational speed and image quality. Here, we address these limitations using a novel machine learning approach to analysis. With a convolutional neural network (CNN), we were able to achieve an experimental fit precision of (+/-) 0.122 mN/m in predicting the surface tension of drop images at a rate of 1.5 ms^-1 versus 7.7 s^-1, which is more than 5,000 times faster than the traditional method. The results are validated on real images …

Effects Of Slip On Highly Viscous Thin-Film Flows Inside Vertical Tubes (Constant Radius, Constricted And Flexible), Mark S. Schwitzerlett 2023 Virginia Commonwealth University

Effects Of Slip On Highly Viscous Thin-Film Flows Inside Vertical Tubes (Constant Radius, Constricted And Flexible), Mark S. Schwitzerlett

Theses and Dissertations

Viscous liquid film flows in a tube arise in numerous industrial and biological applications, including the transport of mucus in human airways. Previous modeling studies have typically used no-slip boundary conditions, but in some applications the effects of slip at the boundary may not be negligible. We derive a long-wave model based on lubrication theory which allows for slippage along the boundary. Linear stability analysis verifies the impact of slip-length on the speed, growth rate, and wavelength of the most unstable mode. Nonlinear simulations demonstrate the impact of slip-length on plug formation and wave dynamics. These simulations are conducted for …

Early Termination In Phase Ii Clinical Trials: Admissible Designs Using Decreasingly Informative Priors, Chen Wang 2023 Virginia Commonwealth University

Early Termination In Phase Ii Clinical Trials: Admissible Designs Using Decreasingly Informative Priors, Chen Wang

Theses and Dissertations

In Phase II clinical trials, Thall and Simon’s Bayesian posterior probability design is commonly implemented to allow for an early termination to determine whether a new treatment warrants further investigation in a larger-scale Phase III trial; this in turn requires a pre-selected prior distribution based on known clinical opinion or historical information. Moreover, this Bayesian approach can result in an issue of inflating type I error rate by monitoring interim data to inform early termination decisions. Alternatively, a Bayesian approach with the decreasingly informative prior (DIP), which is an informative yet skeptical prior, can be implemented to overcome the contentious …

Dynamical Aspects In (4+1)-Body Problems, Ryan Gauthier 2023 Wilfrid Laurier University

Dynamical Aspects In (4+1)-Body Problems, Ryan Gauthier

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

The n-body problem models a system of n-point masses that attract each other via some binary interaction. The (n + 1)-body problem assumes that one of the masses is located at the origin of the coordinate system. For example, an (n+1)-body problem is an ideal model for Saturn, seen as the central mass, and one of its outer rings. A relative equilibrium (RE) is a special solution of the (n+1)-body problem where the non-central bodies rotate rigidly about the centre of mass. In rotating coordinates, these solutions become equilibria.

In this thesis we study dynamical aspects of planar (4 + …

The Lie Algebra Sl2(C) And Krawtchouk Polynomials, NKosi Alexander 2023 University of North Florida

The Lie Algebra Sl2(C) And Krawtchouk Polynomials, Nkosi Alexander

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The Lie algebra L = sl2(C) consists of the 2 × 2 complex matrices that have trace zero, together with the Lie bracket [y, z] = yz − zy. In this thesis we study a relationship between L and Krawtchouk polynomials. We consider a type of element in L said to be normalized semisimple. Let a, a^∗ be normalized semisimple elements that generate L. We show that a, a^∗ satisfy a pair of relations, called the Askey-Wilson relations. For a positive integer N, we consider an (N + 1)-dimensional irreducible L-module V consisting of the homogeneous polynomials in two variables …

Development Of An Operational Satellite-Based Flood Monitoring Model For Tanzania, Andrew Kimati 2022 Global Water Partnership Tanzania

Development Of An Operational Satellite-Based Flood Monitoring Model For Tanzania, Andrew Kimati

Tanzania Journal of Engineering and Technology (TJET)

Timely information during water related disasters is of utmost importance for flood preparedness and risk reduction. However, the conventional ground-based photographic monitoring of flooded areas is an expensive and time-consuming exercise. Satellite remote sensing is a quick and affordable approach that can be used for concurrent floods detection at different scales. This is important as it facilitates timely information for emergency response to disaster management departments, even in scarcely instrumented catchments. This study presents a novel approach for flood tracking using satellite image remote sensing science to map flood affected areas immediately after occurrence of rainfall events. An open-source water …

Occlusion Handler Density Networks For 3d Multimodal Joint Location Of Hand Pose Hypothesis, Stanley Tito 2022 Mbeya University of Science and Technology, Mbeya

Occlusion Handler Density Networks For 3d Multimodal Joint Location Of Hand Pose Hypothesis, Stanley Tito

Tanzania Journal of Engineering and Technology (TJET)

(HPE) process is an ill-posed challenge. This is due to severe self occluded joints of the hand. The existing approaches for predicting pose parameters of the hand, utilize a single-value mapping of an input image to generate final pose output. This way makes it difficult to handle occlusion especially when it comes from the multimodal pose hypothesis. This paper introduces an effective method of handling multimodal joint occlusion using the negative log-likelihood of a multimodal mixture-of-Gaussians through a hybrid hierarchical mixture density network (HHMDN). The proposed approach generates multiple feasible hypotheses of 3D poses with visibility, unimodal and multimodal distribution …

Filtering Effect On Rssi-Based Indoor Localization Methods, Kwame S. Ibwe

Tanzania Journal of Engineering and Technology (TJET)

Indoor positioning systems are used to locate and track objects in an indoor environment. Distance estimation is done using received signal strength indicator (RSSI) of radio frequency signals. However, RSSI is prone to noise and interference which can greatly affect the accuracy performance of the system. In this paper Internet of Things (IoT) technologies like low energy Bluetooth (BLE), WiFi, LoRaWAN and ZigBee are used to obtain indoor positioning. Adopting the existing trilateration and positioning algorithms, the Kalman, Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) and Particle filtering methods are employed to denoise the received RSSI signals to improve positioning accuracy. Experimental results …

A Genetic Algorithm Approach To Optimal Sizing And Placement Of Distributed Generation On Nigerian Radial Feeders, Adelowo Balogun 2022 Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company, Osun Region, Osogbo, Osun, NIGERIA

A Genetic Algorithm Approach To Optimal Sizing And Placement Of Distributed Generation On Nigerian Radial Feeders, Adelowo Balogun

Tanzania Journal of Engineering and Technology (TJET)

Mitigating power loss and voltage profile problems on radial distribution networks has been a major challenge to distribution system operators. While deployment of distributed generation, as compensators, has made a suitable solution option, optimum placement and sizing of the compensators has been a concern and it has thus been receiving great attention. Meta-heuristic algorithms have been found efficacious in this respect, yet the use of the algorithms in addressing problems of radial feeders is still comparatively low in Nigeria where analytical and numerical programming methods are common. Hence; the use of genetic algorithm to site and size distributed generator for …

Numerical Solutions Of Singular Nonlinear Ordinary Differential Equations Using Said-Ball Polynomials, Mobarek A. Assabaai, Ahmed Kherd

Emirates Journal for Engineering Research

In this article, the collocation method based on Said-Ball polynomials have been used to solve the singular nonlinear ordinary differential equations of various orders numerically. An operational matrix forms of these ordinary differential equations are obtained from Said-Ball polynomial with variated relations of solution and different derivatives. The presented method reduces the given problem to a system of nonlinear algebraic equations, which removed the singularity of ordinary differential equations. Resulting system is solved using Newton's iteration method to get the coefficients of Said-Ball polynomials. We obtained approximate solutions of the problem under study. Numerical results have been obtained and compared …

Hamilton Cycles In Bidirected Complete Graphs, Arthur Busch, Mohammed A. Mutar, Daniel Slilaty 2022 Wright State University - Main Campus

Hamilton Cycles In Bidirected Complete Graphs, Arthur Busch, Mohammed A. Mutar, Daniel Slilaty

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications

Zaslavsky observed that the topics of directed cycles in directed graphs and alternating cycles in edge 2-colored graphs have a common generalization in the study of coherent cycles in bidirected graphs. There are classical theorems by Camion, Harary and Moser, Häggkvist and Manoussakis, and Saad which relate strong connectivity and Hamiltonicity in directed "complete" graphs and edge 2-colored "complete" graphs. We prove two analogues to these theorems for bidirected "complete" signed graphs.
