Mechanical Visualization Of A Second Order Dynamic Equation On Varying Time Scales, Molly Kathryn Peterson 2014 Marshall University

Mechanical Visualization Of A Second Order Dynamic Equation On Varying Time Scales, Molly Kathryn Peterson

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

In this work, we give an introduction to Time Scales Calculus, the properties of the exponential function on an arbitrary time scale, and use it to solve linear dynamic equation of second order. Time Scales Calculus was introduced by Stefan Hilger in 1988. It brings together the theories of difference and differential equations into one unified theory. By using the properties of the delta derivative and the delta anti-derivative, we analyze the behavior of a second order linear homogeneous dynamic equation on various time scales. After the analytical discussion, we will graphically evaluate the second order dynamic equation in Marshall’s …

Low Mach Number Fluctuating Hydrodynamics Of Diffusively Mixing Fluids, Aleksandar Donev, Andy J. Nonaka, Yifei Sun, Thomas Fai, Alejandro Garcia, John B. Bell 2014 New York University

Low Mach Number Fluctuating Hydrodynamics Of Diffusively Mixing Fluids, Aleksandar Donev, Andy J. Nonaka, Yifei Sun, Thomas Fai, Alejandro Garcia, John B. Bell

Faculty Publications

We formulate low Mach number fluctuating hydrodynamic equations appropriate for modeling diffusive mixing in isothermal mixtures of fluids with different density and transport coefficients. These equations eliminate the fast isentropic fluctuations in pressure associated with the propagation of sound waves by replacing the equation of state with a local thermodynamic constraint. We demonstrate that the low Mach number model preserves the spatio-temporal spectrum of the slower diffusive fluctuations. We develop a strictly conservative finite-volume spatial discretization of the low Mach number fluctuating equations in both two and three dimensions. We construct several explicit Runge-Kutta temporal integrators that strictly maintain the …

Evolution Of Perturbations In Flow Field Mechanics, Samantha R. Bell, David Forliti, Nils Sedano, Kriss Vanderhyde 2014 Boston University

Evolution Of Perturbations In Flow Field Mechanics, Samantha R. Bell, David Forliti, Nils Sedano, Kriss Vanderhyde

STAR Program Research Presentations

This project explores the stability analysis of a given flow field. Specifically, where the peak disturbance occurs in a flow as this is the disturbance that is most likely to occur. In rocket combustion, it is important to understand where the maximum disturbance occurs so that the mixing of fuel can be stabilized. The instabilities are the results of frequencies in the area surrounding the flow field. The linear stability governing equations are employed to better understand the disturbance. The governing equations for continuity and momentum in the x and y directions are used to form an equation for the …

Graph Partitioning Using Matrix Values For Preconditioning Symmetric Positive Definite Systems, Eugenr Vecharynski, Yousef Saad, Masha Sosonkina 2014 Old Dominion University

Graph Partitioning Using Matrix Values For Preconditioning Symmetric Positive Definite Systems, Eugenr Vecharynski, Yousef Saad, Masha Sosonkina

Computational Modeling & Simulation Engineering Faculty Publications

Prior to the parallel solution of a large linear system, it is required to perform a partitioning of its equations/unknowns. Standard partitioning algorithms are designed using the considerations of the efficiency of the parallel matrix-vector multiplication, and typically disregard the information on the coefficients of the matrix. This information, however, may have a significant impact on the quality of the preconditioning procedure used within the chosen iterative scheme. In the present paper, we suggest a spectral partitioning algorithm, which takes into account the information on the matrix coefficients and constructs partitions with respect to the objective of enhancing the quality …

Topological Ramsey Spaces, Associated Ultrafilters, And Their Applications To The Tukey Theory Of Ultrafilters And Dedekind Cuts Of Nonstandard Arithmetic, Timothy Onofre Trujillo 2014 University of Denver

Topological Ramsey Spaces, Associated Ultrafilters, And Their Applications To The Tukey Theory Of Ultrafilters And Dedekind Cuts Of Nonstandard Arithmetic, Timothy Onofre Trujillo

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation makes contributions to the areas of combinatorial set theory, the model theory of arithmetic, and the Tukey theory of ultrafilters. The main results are broken into three parts.

In the first part, we identify some new partition relations among finite trees and use them to answer an open question of Dobrinen; namely, "for n < omega, are the notions of Ramsey for Rn and selective for Rn equivalent?" We show that for each n < omega, it is consistent with ZFC that there exists a selective for Rn ultrafilter which is not Ramsey for Rn.

In the second part, we extend results of Blass concerning Dedekind cuts associated to ultrafilter mappings from p-point and weakly-Ramsey ultrafilters to ultrafilter mappings from Ramsey for R1 ultrafilters. Blass associates to each ultrafilter U on a countable set X and each function g …

Fast Algorithms For Analyzing Partially Ranked Data, Matthew McDermott 2014 Harvey Mudd College

Fast Algorithms For Analyzing Partially Ranked Data, Matthew Mcdermott

HMC Senior Theses

Imagine your local creamery administers a survey asking their patrons to choose their five favorite ice cream flavors. Any data collected by this survey would be an example of partially ranked data, as the set of all possible flavors is only ranked into subsets of the chosen flavors and the non-chosen flavors. If the creamery asks you to help analyze this data, what approaches could you take? One approach is to use the natural symmetries of the underlying data space to decompose any data set into smaller parts that can be more easily understood. In this work, I describe …

Energy-Driven Pattern Formation In Planar Dipole-Dipole Systems, Jaron P. Kent-Dobias 2014 Harvey Mudd College

Energy-Driven Pattern Formation In Planar Dipole-Dipole Systems, Jaron P. Kent-Dobias

HMC Senior Theses

A variety of two-dimensional fluid systems, known as dipole-mediated systems, exhibit a dipole-dipole interaction between their fluid constituents. The com- petition of this repulsive dipolar force with the cohesive fluid forces cause these systems to form intricate and patterned structures in their boundaries. In this thesis, we show that the microscopic details of any such system are irrelevant in the macroscopic limit and contribute only to a constant offset in the system’s energy. A numeric model is developed, and some important stable domain morphologies are characterized. Previously unresolved bifurcating branches are explored. Finally, by applying a random energy background to …

A Mathematical Framework For Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Obstacle Avoidance, Sorathan Chaturapruek 2014 Harvey Mudd College

A Mathematical Framework For Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Obstacle Avoidance, Sorathan Chaturapruek

HMC Senior Theses

The obstacle avoidance navigation problem for Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) is a very challenging problem. It lies at the intersection of many fields such as probability, differential geometry, optimal control, and robotics. We build a mathematical framework to solve this problem for quadrotors using both a theoretical approach through a Hamiltonian system and a machine learning approach that learns from human sub-experts' multiple demonstrations in obstacle avoidance. Prior research on the machine learning approach uses an algorithm that does not incorporate geometry. We have developed tools to solve and test the obstacle avoidance problem through mathematics.

A Non-Erasable Magnetic Memory Based On The Magnetic Permeability, J R. Petrie, K A. Wieland, R A. Burke, G A. Newburgh, J E. Burnette, G A. Fisher, A S. Edelstein 2014 U.S. Army Research Laboratory

A Non-Erasable Magnetic Memory Based On The Magnetic Permeability, J R. Petrie, K A. Wieland, R A. Burke, G A. Newburgh, J E. Burnette, G A. Fisher, A S. Edelstein

United States Army: Publications

A non-erasable memory based on using differences in the magnetic permeability is demonstrated. The method can potentially store information indefinitely. Initially the high permeability bits were 10–50 μm wide lines of sputtered permalloy (Ni81Fe19) on a glass substrate. In a second writing technique a continuous film of amorphous, high permeability ferromagnetic Metglas (Fe78Si13Bg) was sputtered onto a similar glass substrate. Low permeability, crystalline 50 Jlm wide lines were then written in the film by laser heating. Both types of written media were read by applying an external probe field that is locally modified by the permeability …

Examples Of G-Strand Equations, Darryl Holm, Rossen Ivanov 2014 Imperial College London

Examples Of G-Strand Equations, Darryl Holm, Rossen Ivanov

Conference papers

The G-strand equations for a map R×R into a Lie group G are associated to a G-invariant Lagrangian. The Lie group manifold is also the configuration space for the Lagrangian. The G-strand itself is the map g(t,s):R×R→G, where t and s are the independent variables of the G-strand equations. The Euler-Poincare´ reduction of the variational principle leads to a formulation where the dependent variables of the G-strand equations take values in the corresponding Lie algebra g and its co-algebra, g∗ with respect to the pairing provided by the variational derivatives of the Lagrangian. We review examples of G-strand constructions, including …

Infinitely Many Rotationally Symmetric Solutions To A Class Of Semilinear Laplace-Beltrami Equations On The Unit Sphere, Emily M. Fischer 2014 Harvey Mudd College

Infinitely Many Rotationally Symmetric Solutions To A Class Of Semilinear Laplace-Beltrami Equations On The Unit Sphere, Emily M. Fischer

HMC Senior Theses

I show that a class of semilinear Laplace-Beltrami equations has infinitely many solutions on the unit sphere which are symmetric with respect to rotations around some axis. This equation corresponds to a singular ordinary differential equation, which we solve using energy analysis. We obtain a Pohozaev-type identity to prove that the energy is continuously increasing with the initial condition and then use phase plane analysis to prove the existence of infinitely many solutions.

Composition Of Integers With Bounded Parts, Darren B. Glass 2014 Gettysburg College

Composition Of Integers With Bounded Parts, Darren B. Glass

Math Faculty Publications

In this note, we consider ordered partitions of integers such that each entry is no more than a fixed portion of the sum. We give a method for constructing all such compositions as well as both an explicit formula and a generating function describing the number of k-tuples whose entries are bounded in this way and sum to a fixed value g.

Experiments On Surfactants And Thin Fluid Films, Peter Megson 2014 Harvey Mudd College

Experiments On Surfactants And Thin Fluid Films, Peter Megson

HMC Senior Theses

We investigate the spatiotemporal dynamics of a surfactant monolayer on a thin fluid film spreading inward into a region devoid of surfactant, a system motivated by the alveolus of the human lung. We perform experiments that simultaneously measure the fluid height profile and the fluorescence intensity due to our fluorescent surfactant, NBD-PC. We perform experiments on both a Newtonian layer of glycerol and a shear-thinning fluid layer consisting of xanthan gum mixed with glycerol. We can very successfully extract height profiles on the xanthan gum fluid, although the simultaneous measurement of fluorescent intensity profiles proved problematic, as the laser tended …

Numerical Algorithms For Solving A Generalized Cancer Chemotherapy Problem, Frank Nani, Mingxian Jin 2014 Fayetteville State University

Numerical Algorithms For Solving A Generalized Cancer Chemotherapy Problem, Frank Nani, Mingxian Jin

Math and Computer Science Faculty Working Papers

In this paper, two elaborate numerical algorithms are presented for solving the Nani- Oguztoreli functional differential equations associated with cell-cycle specific cancer chemotherapy. The generalized cell-cycle specific cancer chemotherapy model of Nani- Oguztoreli contains discrete time delays which represent the times that the cancer cells spend in each cell-cycle phase. The model also takes into account that inter-cell cycle phase transition rate constants, recruitment of resting cells from the GO phase, and effect of chemotherapy drug on cells in each phase. The algorithms utilize a modified version of the Method of Steps algorithms. The constructed numerical schemes can be implemented …

Data Mining Based Hybridization Of Meta-Raps, Fatemah Al-Duoli, Ghaith Rabadi 2014 Old Dominion University

Data Mining Based Hybridization Of Meta-Raps, Fatemah Al-Duoli, Ghaith Rabadi

Engineering Management & Systems Engineering Faculty Publications

Though metaheuristics have been frequently employed to improve the performance of data mining algorithms, the opposite is not true. This paper discusses the process of employing a data mining algorithm to improve the performance of a metaheuristic algorithm. The targeted algorithms to be hybridized are the Meta-heuristic for Randomized Priority Search (Meta-RaPS) and an algorithm used to create an Inductive Decision Tree. This hybridization focuses on using a decision tree to perform on-line tuning of the parameters in Meta-RaPS. The process makes use of the information collected during the iterative construction and improvement phases Meta-RaPS performs. The data mining algorithm …

Experimental Validation Of Robotic Manifold Tracking In Gyre-Like Flows, Matthew Michini, M. Ani Hsieh, Eric Forgoston, Ira B. Schwartz 2014 Drexel University

Experimental Validation Of Robotic Manifold Tracking In Gyre-Like Flows, Matthew Michini, M. Ani Hsieh, Eric Forgoston, Ira B. Schwartz

Department of Applied Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

In this paper, we present a first attempt toward experimental validation of a multi-robot strategy for tracking manifolds and Lagrangian coherent structures (LCS) in flows. LCS exist in natural fluid flows at various scales, and they are time-varying extensions of stable and unstable manifolds of time invariant dynamical systems. In this work, we present the first steps toward experimentally validating our previously proposed real-time manifold and LCS tracking strategy that relies solely on local measurements. Although we have validated the strategy in simulations using analytical flow models, experimental flow data, and actual ocean data, the strategy has never been implemented …

Transportation Of Perishable And Refrigerated Foods In Mylar Foil Bags And Insulated Containers: A Time-Temperature Study, Yanyan Li, John P. Schrade, Haiyan Su, John Specchio 2014 Montclair State University

Transportation Of Perishable And Refrigerated Foods In Mylar Foil Bags And Insulated Containers: A Time-Temperature Study, Yanyan Li, John P. Schrade, Haiyan Su, John Specchio

Department of Applied Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

Data are lacking on the temperature changes of food during transport without the use of refrigerated trucks. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the ability of several insulated and noninsulated containers with or without frozen gel packs to keep perishable and refrigerated foods within the temperature safe zone in relationship to duration of transport. The study was designed to duplicate the practices exhibited by customers purchasing perishable food products from a cash-and-carry business. Approximately 40 perishable food items were evaluated. Four types of containers were tested: a mylar foil bag, a commercial insulated bag, a generic insulated bag, …

Generalized Least-Squares Regressions Iii: Further Theory And Classification, Nataniel Greene 2014 CUNY Kingsborough Community College

Generalized Least-Squares Regressions Iii: Further Theory And Classification, Nataniel Greene

Publications and Research

This paper continues the work of this series with two results. The first is an exponential equivalence theorem which states that every generalized least-squares regression line can be generated by an equivalent exponential regression. It follows that every generalized least-squares line has an effective normalized exponential parameter between 0 and 1 which classifies the line on the spectrum between ordinary least-squares and the extremal line for a given set of data. The second result is the presentation of fundamental formulas for the generalized least-squares slope and y-intercept.
