Dynamic Meshing Around Fluid-Fluid Interfaces With Applications To Droplet Tracking In Contraction Geometries, Ahmad Baniabedalruhman 2015 Michigan Technological University

Dynamic Meshing Around Fluid-Fluid Interfaces With Applications To Droplet Tracking In Contraction Geometries, Ahmad Baniabedalruhman

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open

The dynamic meshing procedure in an open source three-dimensional solver for calculating immiscible two-phase flow is modified to allow for simulations in two-dimensional planar and axisymmetric geometries. Specifically, the dynamic mesh refinement procedure, which functions only for the partitioning of three-dimensional hexahedral cells, is modified for the partitioning of cells in two-dimensional planar and axisymmetric flow simulations. Moreover, the procedure is modified to allow for computing the deformation and breakup of drops or bubbles that are very small relative to the mesh of the flow domain. This is necessary to avoid mass loss when tracking small drops or bubbles through …

Left-Orderability, Cyclic Branched Covers And Representations Of The Knot Group, Ying Hu 2015 Louisiana State University and Agricultural and Mechanical College

Left-Orderability, Cyclic Branched Covers And Representations Of The Knot Group, Ying Hu

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

A group G is called left-orderable if one can find a total order on G, which is preserved under left multiplication. In this paper we first give a sufficient condition for the fundamental group of the nth cyclic branched cover of the three sphere over a prime knot K to be left-orderable, in terms of representations of the knot group. Then we make use of this criterion to study the left-orderability of fundamental groups of cyclic branched covers over two-bridge knots and satellite knots.

Process Design, Dynamics, And Techno-Economic Analysis Of A Sustainable Coal, Wind, And Small Modular Nuclear Reactor Hybrid Energy System, Kyle Lee Buchheit 2015 Missouri University of Science and Technology

Process Design, Dynamics, And Techno-Economic Analysis Of A Sustainable Coal, Wind, And Small Modular Nuclear Reactor Hybrid Energy System, Kyle Lee Buchheit

Doctoral Dissertations

"The availability of cheap electricity is one of the biggest factors for improving quality of life. With the debate on the effects of carbon dioxide emissions continuing, several countries have either implemented or are considering the reduction of emissions through various economic means. The inclusion of a monetary penalty on carbon emissions would increase the prices of electricity produced by carbon-based sources. The push for large-scale renewable sources of energy has met problems with regards to energy storage and availability. The proposed coal, wind, and nuclear hybrid energy system would combine a renewable energy source, wind, with traditional and stable …

Wavelets, Coorbit Theory, And Projective Representations, Amer Hasan Darweesh 2015 Louisiana State University and Agricultural and Mechanical College

Wavelets, Coorbit Theory, And Projective Representations, Amer Hasan Darweesh

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Banach spaces of functions, or more generally, of distributions are one of the main topics in analysis. In this thesis, we present an abstract framework for construction of invariant Banach function spaces from projective group representations. Coorbit theory gives a unified method to construct invariant Banach function spaces via representations of Lie groups. This theory was introduced by \Fch\, and \Gro\, in \cite{FG,FG1, FG2,FG3} and then extended in \cite{CO2}. We generalize this concept by constructing coorbit spaces using projective representation which is first studied by O. Christensen in \cite{O1}. This allows us to describe wider classes of function spaces as …

Periodic State Revivals In Commensurate Waveguide Arrays, Jovan Petrovic, J. J. P. Veerman 2015 Vinca Institute of Nuclear Sciences

Periodic State Revivals In Commensurate Waveguide Arrays, Jovan Petrovic, J. J. P. Veerman

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications and Presentations

Emerging optical and quantum computers require hardware capable of coherent transport of and operations on quantum states. Here, we investigate finite optical waveguide arrays with linear coupling as means of efficient and compact coherent state transfer. Coherent transfer with periodic state revivals is enabled by engineering coupling coefficients between neighbouring waveguides to yield commensurate eigenvalue spectrum. Particular cases of finite arrays have been actively studied to achieve the perfect state transfer by mirroring the input into the output state.

We explore a much wider scope of coherent propagation and revivals of both the state amplitude and phase. We analytically solve …

An Applied Mathematics Approach To Modeling Inflammation: Hematopoietic Bone Marrow Stem Cells, Systemic Estrogen And Wound Healing And Gas Exchange In The Lungs And Body, Racheal L. Cooper 2015 Virginia Commonwealth University

An Applied Mathematics Approach To Modeling Inflammation: Hematopoietic Bone Marrow Stem Cells, Systemic Estrogen And Wound Healing And Gas Exchange In The Lungs And Body, Racheal L. Cooper

Theses and Dissertations

Mathematical models apply to a multitude physiological processes and are used to make predictions and analyze outcomes of these processes. Specifically, in the medical field, a mathematical model uses a set of initial conditions that represents a physiological state as input and a set of parameter values are used to describe the interaction between variables being modeled. These models are used to analyze possible outcomes, and assist physicians in choosing the most appropriate treatment options for a particular situation. We aim to use mathematical modeling to analyze the dynamics of processes involved in the inflammatory process.

First, we create a …

Domination Numbers Of Semi-Strong Products Of Graphs, Stephen R. Cheney 2015 Virginia Commonwealth University

Domination Numbers Of Semi-Strong Products Of Graphs, Stephen R. Cheney

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis examines the domination number of the semi-strong product of two graphs G and H where both G and H are simple and connected graphs. The product has an edge set that is the union of the edge set of the direct product of G and H together with the cardinality of V(H), copies of G. Unlike the other more common products (Cartesian, direct and strong), the semi-strong product is neither commutative nor associative.

The semi-strong product is not supermultiplicative, so it does not satisfy a Vizing like conjecture. It is also not submultiplicative so it shares these two …

Discrete Nonlinear Planar Systems And Applications To Biological Population Models, Shushan Lazaryan, Nika LAzaryan, Nika Lazaryan 2015 Virginia Commonwealth University

Discrete Nonlinear Planar Systems And Applications To Biological Population Models, Shushan Lazaryan, Nika Lazaryan, Nika Lazaryan

Theses and Dissertations

We study planar systems of difference equations and applications to biological models of species populations. Central to the analysis of this study is the idea of folding - the method of transforming systems of difference equations into higher order scalar difference equations. Two classes of second order equations are studied: quadratic fractional and exponential.

We investigate the boundedness and persistence of solutions, the global stability of the positive fixed point and the occurrence of periodic solutions of the quadratic rational equations. These results are applied to a class of linear/rational systems that can be transformed into a quadratic fractional equation …

Applications Of Stability Analysis To Nonlinear Discrete Dynamical Systems Modeling Interactions, Jonathan L. Hughes 2015 Virginia Commonwealth University

Applications Of Stability Analysis To Nonlinear Discrete Dynamical Systems Modeling Interactions, Jonathan L. Hughes

Theses and Dissertations

Many of the phenomena studied in the natural and social sciences are governed by processes which are discrete and nonlinear in nature, while the most highly developed and commonly used mathematical models are linear and continuous. There are significant differences between the discrete and the continuous, the nonlinear and the linear cases, and the development of mathematical models which exhibit the discrete, nonlinear properties occurring in nature and society is critical to future scientific progress. This thesis presents the basic theory of discrete dynamical systems and stability analysis and explores several applications of this theory to nonlinear systems which model …

A Comparison Of Obesity Interventions Using Energy Balance Models, Marcella Torres 2015 Virginia Commonwealth University

A Comparison Of Obesity Interventions Using Energy Balance Models, Marcella Torres

Theses and Dissertations

An energy balance model of human metabolism developed by Hall et al. is extended to compare body composition outcomes among standard and proposed obesity interventions. Standard interventions include a drastic diet or a drastic diet with endurance training. Outcomes for these interventions are typically poor in clinical studies. Proposed interventions include a gradual diet and the addition of resistance training to preserve lean mass and metabolic rate. We see that resistance training, regardless of dietary strategy, achieves these goals. Finally, we observe that the optimal obesity intervention for continued maintenance of a healthy body composition following a diet includes a …

A New Method In Distribution Theory With A Non-Smooth Framework, Yunyun Yang

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

In this work, we present a complete treatment of the theory of thick distributions and its asymptotic expansion. We also present several applications of thick distributions in mathematical physics, function spaces, and measure theory. We also discuss regularization using different surfaces. In the last chapter we present some recent applications of distributions in clarifying the moment terms in the heat kernel expansion, and in explaining the relation between the heat kernel expansion and the cylinder kernel expansion.

Well-Quasi-Ordering By The Induced-Minor Relation, Chanun Lewchalermvongs 2015 Louisiana State University and Agricultural and Mechanical College

Well-Quasi-Ordering By The Induced-Minor Relation, Chanun Lewchalermvongs

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Robertson and Seymour proved Wagner's Conjecture, which says that finite graphs are well-quasi-ordered by the minor relation. Their work motivates the question as to whether any class of graphs is well-quasi-ordered by other containment relations. This dissertation is concerned with a special graph containment relation, the induced-minor relation. This dissertation begins with a brief introduction to various graph containment relations and their connections with well-quasi-ordering. In the first chapter, we discuss the results about well-quasi-ordering by graph containment relations and the main problems of this dissertation. The graph theory terminology and preliminary results that will be used are presented in …

Pulses And Snakes In Ginzburg-Landau Equation, S.C. Mancas, Roy S. Choudhury 2015 Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University

Pulses And Snakes In Ginzburg-Landau Equation, S.C. Mancas, Roy S. Choudhury

Publications

Using a variational formulation for partial differential equations combined with numerical simulations on ordinary differential equations (ODEs), we find two categories (pulses and snakes) of dissipative solitons, and analyze the dependence of both their shape and stability on the physical parameters of the cubic-quintic Ginzburg–Landau equation (CGLE). In contrast to the regular solitary waves investigated in numerous integrable and non-integrable systems over the last three decades, these dissipative solitons are not stationary in time. Rather, they are spatially confined pulse-type structures whose envelopes exhibit complicated temporal dynamics. Numerical simulations reveal very interesting bifurcations sequences as the parameters of the CGLE …

Blurring And Deblurring Digital Images Using The Dihedral Group, Husein Hadi Abbas Jassim, Zahir M. Hussain, Hind R.M. Shaaban, Kawther B.R. Al-dbag 2015 Edith Cowan University

Blurring And Deblurring Digital Images Using The Dihedral Group, Husein Hadi Abbas Jassim, Zahir M. Hussain, Hind R.M. Shaaban, Kawther B.R. Al-Dbag

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

A new method of blurring and deblurring digital images is presented. The approach is based on using new filters generating from average filter and H-filters using the action of the dihedral group. These filters are called HB-filters; used to cause a motion blur and then deblurring affected images. Also, enhancing images using HB-filters is presented as compared to other methods like Average, Gaussian, and Motion. Results and analysis show that the HB-filters are better in peak signal to noise ratio (PSNR) and RMSE.

The Simulation & Evaluation Of Surge Hazard Using A Response Surface Method In The New York Bight, Michael H. Bredesen 2015 University of North Florida

The Simulation & Evaluation Of Surge Hazard Using A Response Surface Method In The New York Bight, Michael H. Bredesen

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Atmospheric features, such as tropical cyclones, act as a driving mechanism for many of the major hazards affecting coastal areas around the world. Accurate and efficient quantification of tropical cyclone surge hazard is essential to the development of resilient coastal communities, particularly given continued sea level trend concerns. Recent major tropical cyclones that have impacted the northeastern portion of the United States have resulted in devastating flooding in New York City, the most densely populated city in the US. As a part of national effort to re-evaluate coastal inundation hazards, the Federal Emergency Management Agency used the Joint Probability Method …

Loss Modeling Of A Permanent Magnet Dc Motor Drive Water Pumping System, Nelson Lujara

Tanzania Journal of Engineering and Technology (TJET)

The paper presents an analytical approach to the determination of losses in each of the sub-systems of the Photovoltaic (PV) Permanent Magnet DC Motor (PMDC) drive water pumping system with and without maximum power tracking. The losses of the system at varying heads are firstly, determined using parameters from the data sheets and then validated by experimental results. The results are used to establish the head and the flow rate optimal operating point of the system.

Application Of Trip Generation Models For Urban Transport Planning In A Data Scarce Developing Country City: The Case Of Dar Es Salaam, Hannibal Bwire 2014 Department of Transportation and Geotechnical Engineering, University of Dar es Salaam, P.O. BOX 35131 Dar es Salaam

Application Of Trip Generation Models For Urban Transport Planning In A Data Scarce Developing Country City: The Case Of Dar Es Salaam, Hannibal Bwire

Tanzania Journal of Engineering and Technology (TJET)

With the increase in travel demand and traffic management problems in many developing countries cities, travel demand forecasting models are being employed increasingly to make informed decisions about the operational improvements to the existing transportation system and the design and performance of future transportation systems. The main advantage of using travel demand forecasting models for such purposes is that they are capable of capturing the interactive effects of different components of the system under study. However, for some time now there have been concerns about the application of transport planning models in developing countries. The concerns have been mainly in …

Rainich-Type Conditions For Perfect Fluid Spacetimes, Dionisios Krongos, Charles G. Torre 2014 Utah State University

Rainich-Type Conditions For Perfect Fluid Spacetimes, Dionisios Krongos, Charles G. Torre

Research Vignettes

In this worksheet we describe and illustrate a relatively simple set of new Rainich-type conditions on an n-dimensional spacetime which are necessary and sufficient for it to define a perfect fluid solution of the Einstein field equations. Procedures are provided which implement these Rainich-type conditions and which reconstruct the perfect fluid from the metric. These results provide an example of the idea of geometrization of matter fields in general relativity, which is a purely geometrical characterization of matter fields via the Einstein field equations.

Integrating Path-Dependent Functionals On Yeh-Wiener Space, Ian Pierce, David Skough 2014 USAFA

Integrating Path-Dependent Functionals On Yeh-Wiener Space, Ian Pierce, David Skough

Department of Mathematics: Faculty Publications

Denote by Ca,b(Q) the generalized two-parameter Yeh-Wiener space with associated Gaussian measure. We investigate several scenarios in which integrals of functionals on this space can be reduced to integrals of related functionals over an appropriate single-parameter generalized Wiener space Cˆa,ˆb[0, T ]. This extends some interesting results of R. H. Cameron and D. A. Storvick.

A Periodic Matrix Population Model For Monarch Butterflies, Emily Hunt 2014 James Madison University

A Periodic Matrix Population Model For Monarch Butterflies, Emily Hunt

Senior Honors Projects, 2010-2019

The migration pattern of the monarch butterfly (Danaus plexippus) consists of a sequence of generations of butterflies that originate in Michoacan, Mexico each spring, travel as far north as Southern Canada, and ultimately return to the original location in Mexico the following fall. We use periodic population matrices to model the life cycle of the eastern monarch butterfly and find that, under this model, this migration is not currently at risk. We extend the model to address the three primary obstacles for the long-term survival of this migratory pattern: deforestation in Mexico, increased extreme weather patterns, and milkweed degradation.
