Pseudo-Companion Matrices For Polynomial Systems, Melinda Kleczynski 2018 Michigan Technological University

Pseudo-Companion Matrices For Polynomial Systems, Melinda Kleczynski

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

Roots of a scalar polynomial in one variable are frequently found by computing the eigenvalues of the standard companion matrix. In this exploratory work, we introduce the pseudo-companion matrix for finding roots of multivariable polynomial systems. In some cases, a perturbation of the polynomial system is used for the matrix construction, yielding approximate roots of the original polynomial system. The coordinates of the roots, or their approximations, are obtained from the eigenvectors of this matrix. In this thesis, we describe the process of constructing the pseudo-companion matrix and computing the polynomial roots using illustrative examples.

Wildfire Emissions In The Context Of Global Change And The Implications For Mercury Pollution, Aditya Kumar

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

Wildfires are episodic disturbances that exert a significant influence on the Earth system. They emit substantial amounts of atmospheric pollutants, which can impact atmospheric chemistry/composition and the Earth’s climate at the global and regional scales. This work presents a collection of studies aimed at better estimating wildfire emissions of atmospheric pollutants, quantifying their impacts on remote ecosystems and determining the implications of 2000s-2050s global environmental change (land use/land cover, climate) for wildfire emissions following the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) A1B socioeconomic scenario.

A global fire emissions model is developed to compile global wildfire emission inventories for major atmospheric …

Optimization And Control Of An Array Of Wave Energy Converters, Jianyang Lyu 2018 Michigan Technological University

Optimization And Control Of An Array Of Wave Energy Converters, Jianyang Lyu

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

This study explored optimal configuration of both the array layout and the dimension of each WEC in the array. The array contains heaving buoys with full interaction and exact hydrodynamics. Optimization of dimension was done on each WEC in the array with a given optimal layout, and a higher q-factor was achieved. Both impedance matching optimal control and derivative control were employed, which provides both theoretical maximum energy and a more realistic case. Then the work was expanded to optimization of both the array layout and the dimension of each WEC in the array. An average of 39.21% higher q-factor …

High Accuracy Methods And Regularization Techniques For Fluid Flows And Fluid-Fluid Interaction, Mustafa Aggul 2018 Michigan Technological University

High Accuracy Methods And Regularization Techniques For Fluid Flows And Fluid-Fluid Interaction, Mustafa Aggul

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

This dissertation contains several approaches to resolve irregularity issues of CFD problems, including a decoupling of non-linearly coupled fluid-fluid interaction, due to high Reynolds number. New models present not only regularize the linear systems but also produce high accurate solutions both in space and time. To achieve this goal, methods solve a computationally attractive artificial viscosity approximation of the target problem, and then utilize a correction approach to make it high order accurate. This way, they all allow the usage of legacy code | a frequent requirement in the simulation of fluid flows in complex geometries. In addition, they all …

Particle Filters For State Estimation Of Confined Aquifers, Graeme Field 2018 University of North Florida

Particle Filters For State Estimation Of Confined Aquifers, Graeme Field

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Mathematical models are used in engineering and the sciences to estimate properties of systems of interest, increasing our understanding of the surrounding world and driving technological innovation. Unfortunately, as the systems of interest grow in complexity, so to do the models necessary to accurately describe them. Analytic solutions for problems with such models are provably intractable, motivating the use of approximate yet still accurate estimation techniques. Particle filtering methods have emerged as a popular tool in the presence of such models, spreading from its origins in signal processing to a diverse set of fields throughout engineering and the sciences including …

A Novel Method For Fabricating Material Extrusion 3d Printed Polycarbonate Parts Reinforced With Continuous Carbon Fiber And Improvement Of Strength By Oven And Microwave Heat Treatment, Md Naim Jahangir

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

The study of continuous carbon fiber-based material extrusion FDM printed materials can eliminate the problem of lower strength of additive manufactured part. Additive manufacturing, the process of fabricating complex shaped specimen with a layer-by-layer manufacturing technique, is being utilized in industrial application rapidly. Though the biomedical application may not be literally dependent on strength property, the factor is not deniable for the structural uses of 3D printed polymers. Insufficient neck growth and adhesion between layers are the driving factors of lower strength. The presence of porosity in the 3D printed parts is a major drawback and studies showed that the …

Validation Of A Lottery, Xiaona Zhou 2018 City University of New York (CUNY)

Validation Of A Lottery, Xiaona Zhou

Publications and Research

The NY Pick 4 lottery consists of four "randomly" chosen digits from 0 to 9. For this to be fair, each digit should be equally likely to occur. To determine whether this is the case, a Chi-squared goodness of fit test will be applied to historical data. This provides a quantitative way of measuring how well the observed frequency of digits matches our expectations of a fair lottery. The Chi-squared distribution gives us a number beyond which we reject fairness. However, there is another possibility. If the difference between the fair model and the observed frequency is too small, that …

Improving Time-Of-Flight And Other Depth Images: Super-Resolution And Denoising Using Variational Methods, Salvador Canales Andrade 2018 University of Texas at El Paso

Improving Time-Of-Flight And Other Depth Images: Super-Resolution And Denoising Using Variational Methods, Salvador Canales Andrade

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Depth information is a new important source of perception for machines, which allow them to have a better representation of the surroundings. The depth information provides a more precise map of the location of every object and surfaces in a space of interest in comparison with conventional cameras. Time of flight (ToF) cameras provide one of the techniques to acquire depth maps, however they produce low spatial resolution and noisy maps. This research proposes a framework to enhance and up-scale depth maps by using two different regularization terms: Total Generalized Variation (TGV) and Total Generalized Variation with a Structure Tensor …

An Application Of M-Matrices To Preserve Bounded Positive Solutions To The Evolution Equations Of Biofilm Models, Richard S. Landry Jr. 2017 University of New Orleans

An Application Of M-Matrices To Preserve Bounded Positive Solutions To The Evolution Equations Of Biofilm Models, Richard S. Landry Jr.

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

In this work, we design a linear, two step implicit finite difference method to approximate the solutions of a biological system that describes the interaction between a microbial colony and a surrounding substrate. Three separate models are analyzed, all of which can be described as systems of partial differential equations (PDE)s with nonlinear diffusion and reaction, where the biological colony grows and decays based on the substrate bioavailability. The systems under investigation are all complex models describing the dynamics of biological films. In view of the difficulties to calculate analytical solutions of the models, we design here a numerical technique …

Weighted Inequalities For Dyadic Operators Over Spaces Of Homogeneous Type, David Edward Weirich 2017 University of New Mexico

Weighted Inequalities For Dyadic Operators Over Spaces Of Homogeneous Type, David Edward Weirich

Mathematics & Statistics ETDs

A so-called space of homogeneous type is a set equipped with a quasi-metric and a doubling measure. We give a survey of results spanning the last few decades concerning the geometric properties of such spaces, culminating in the description of a system of dyadic cubes in this setting whose properties mirror the more familiar dyadic lattices in R^n . We then use these cubes to prove a result pertaining to weighted inequality theory over such spaces. We develop a general method for extending Bellman function type arguments from the real line to spaces of homogeneous type. Finally, we uses this …

The BGSU Honors College has struggled with retention and recruitment of underrepresented students with their current admission criteria. This analysis studies different measures of student success such as BGSU GPA and number of completed Honors credits for high-achieving BGSU students who enrolled from Fall 2013 through Fall 2016 to find the best predictors of student success through regression analysis. Throughout this paper, the impact of ethnicity, gender, the college of a student’s program, high …

Homogenization Techniques For Population Dynamics In Strongly Heterogeneous Landscapes, Brian P. Yurk, Christina A. Cobbold 2017 Hope College

Homogenization Techniques For Population Dynamics In Strongly Heterogeneous Landscapes, Brian P. Yurk, Christina A. Cobbold

Faculty Publications

An important problem in spatial ecology is to understand how population-scale patterns emerge from individual-level birth, death, and movement processes. These processes, which depend on local landscape characteristics, vary spatially and may exhibit sharp transitions through behavioural responses to habitat edges, leading to discontinuous population densities. Such systems can be modelled using reaction–diffusion equations with interface conditions that capture local behaviour at patch boundaries. In this work we develop a novel homogenization technique to approximate the large-scale dynamics of the system. We illustrate our approach, which also generalizes to multiple species, with an example of logistic growth within a periodic …

Multivariate Statistical Analyses Of Air Pollutants And Meteorology In Chicago During Summers 2010–2012, Katrina Binaku, Martina Schmeling

Chemistry: Faculty Publications and Other Works

Aerosol, trace gas, and meteorological data were collected in Chicago, Illinois during 2010–2012 summer air studies. Ozone, nitrogen oxides, acetate, formate, chloride, nitrate, sulfate, and oxalate concentrations as well as temperature, wind speed, wind direction, and humidity data were explored by both principal component analysis (PCA) and canonical correlation analysis (CCA). Multivariate statistical techniques were applied to uncover existing relationships between meteorology and air pollutant concentrations and also reduce data dimensions.

In PCA, principal components (PC) revealed a relationship of ozone and nitrate concentrations with respect to temperature and humidity, coupled with transport of species from the south in relation …

Heterogeneous Anisotropy Index And Scaling In Multiphase Random Polycrystals, Muhammad Ridwan Murshed 2017 Rowan University

Heterogeneous Anisotropy Index And Scaling In Multiphase Random Polycrystals, Muhammad Ridwan Murshed

Theses and Dissertations

Under consideration is the finite-size scaling of elastic properties in single and two-phase random polycrystals with individual grains belonging to any crystal class (from cubic to triclinic). These polycrystals are generated by Voronoi tessellations with varying grain sizes and volume fractions. By employing variational principles in elasticity, we introduce the notion of a 'Heterogeneous Anisotropy Index' and investigate its role in the scaling of elastic properties at finite mesoscales. The index turns out to be a function of 43 variables, 21 independent components for each phase and the volume fraction of either phase. Furthermore, the relationship between Heterogeneous Anisotropy Index …

Flow Anisotropy Due To Thread-Like Nanoparticle Agglomerations In Dilute Ferrofluids, Alexander Cali, Wah-Keat Lee, A. David Trubatch, Philip Yecko

Department of Applied Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

Improved knowledge of the magnetic field dependent flow properties of nanoparticle-based magnetic fluids is critical to the design of biomedical applications, including drug delivery and cell sorting. To probe the rheology of ferrofluid on a sub-millimeter scale, we examine the paths of 550 μm diameter glass spheres falling due to gravity in dilute ferrofluid, imposing a uniform magnetic field at an angle with respect to the vertical. Visualization of the spheres’ trajectories is achieved using high resolution X-ray phase-contrast imaging, allowing measurement of a terminal velocity while simultaneously revealing the formation of an array of long thread-like accumulations of magnetic …

Statistical Analysis Of Momentum In Basketball, Mackenzi Stump 2017 Bowling Green State University

Statistical Analysis Of Momentum In Basketball, Mackenzi Stump

Honors Projects

The “hot hand” in sports has been debated for as long as sports have been around. The debate involves whether streaks and slumps in sports are true phenomena or just simply perceptions in the mind of the human viewer. This statistical analysis of momentum in basketball analyzes the distribution of time between scoring events for the BGSU Women’s Basketball team from 2011-2017. We discuss how the distribution of time between scoring events changes with normal game factors such as location of the game, game outcome, and several other factors. If scoring events during a game were always randomly distributed, or …
