Traffic congestion is an enduring problem for major metropolitan areas, such as Atlanta, GA. Our goal is to understand the nature of traffic congestion patterns in the highway system of Cobb County in Atlanta, GA. We created a road network representative of the Cobb County highway system and then superimposed a degree-based SIR model to simulate traffic congestion on that network. The model’s parameters, propagation and dissipation rates, were estimated using empirical traffic data, which are vehicles’ speed time series and speed limit of each road in the network. Models of glucose metabolism in the brain often focus on chemical exchanges and reactions that occur as part of the tricarboxylic acid cycle (TCA cycle). Experiments involving nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy to detect and measure carbon-labeled isotopomers of metabolites such as glutamate in vivo inform kinetic, mechanistic models used to study metabolic pathways. In the present work, a new model with two compartments, astrocytic and neuronal, is developed using known biochemical processes and fit to experimental data coming from fully labeled glucose infusions. This dissertation discusses three instances of temporal prediction, applied to population dynamics and deep learning.

In population modeling, dynamic processes are frequently represented by systems of differential equations, allowing for the analysis of various phenomena. The first application explores modeling cloned hematopoiesis in chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) via a nonlinear system of differential equations. By tracking the evolution of different cell compartments, including cycling and quiescent stem cells, progenitor cells, differentiated cells, and terminally differentiated cells, the model captures the transition from normal hematopoiesis to the chronic and accelerated-acute phases of CML. In this dissertation, we first present a new stochastic framework for parameter estimation and uncertainty quantification in colon cancer-induced immune responses. A stochastic process that captures the system's inherent randomness determines the dynamics of colon cancer. The stochastic framework is based on the Fokker-Planck equation, which represents the evolution of the probability density function corresponding to the stochastic process. We formulate an optimization problem that takes individual patient data with randomness present and solves it to obtain the unknown parameters corresponding to the individual tumor characteristics. Understanding the true burden of community transmission of communicable diseases like COVID-19 is crucial for effective public health response. Clinical cases, while important, only represent a fraction of the actual disease prevalence within a population. In this thesis, we investigate methods to estimate parameters that link clinical cases to the true disease prevalence using a modified compartmental model known as SICR (Susceptible, Infected, Cases, Recovered). We employ Bayesian inference and ensemble Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) simulations to analyze clinical case data provided by the University of Central Florida Health Center from 2020 to 2022. A variety of insults, including tissue injury and/or exposure to pathogen, elicit an immune response in many organisms. An improperly regulated immune response can result in deleterious effects to the organism. Here we present models for lung injury in young and old mice and models for wound healing in coral reefs.

It is well known that the immune response becomes less effective in older individuals. This is of particular interest in pulmonary insults such as ventilator induced lung injury (VILI) or lung infection. Dengue virus (DENV) causes over 390 million infections and around 40,000 deaths worldwide each year. DENV is primarily transmitted by the mosquito Aedes aegypti, and both the life cycle of these mosquitoes and dengue transmission are significantly impacted by temperature. In the temperate region of Central Argentina, where dengue outbreaks first began in 2009, outbreaks of dengue can only occur due to new introductions of DENV from other regions. Due to the relationships between temperature and dengue, the risk of outbreak changes throughout the year.

We present an example that comes from the business or management sciences, namely, the Bass diffusion model. Urban farming can enhance the lives of communities and help reduce food scarcity. This paper presents a conceptual prototype of an efficient urban farming community that can be scaled for a single apartment building or an entire community across all global geoeconomics regions, including densely populated cities and rural, developing towns and communities. When deployed in coordination with smart crop choices, local farm support, and efficient transportation then the result isn’t just sustainability, but also increasing fresh produce accessibility, optimizing nutritional value, eliminating the use of ‘forever chemicals’, reducing transportation costs, and fostering global environmental benefits.

In this paper, we investigate the convergence of solutions of certain nonlinear system of two differential equations using a suitable Lyapunov functional with sufficient conditions to establish our new result. An example is given to demonstrate the effectiveness of the result obtained and geometric argument to show that the solutions of the system are better rapidly converging under the criteria obtained.

Empirical evidence suggests that the attractiveness of a plant to herbivores can be affected by the investment in defense by neighboring plants, as well as investment in defense by the focal plant. Thus, allocation to defense may not only be influenced by the frequency and intensity of herbivory but also by defense strategies employed by other plants in the environment. We incorporate a neighborhood defense effect by applying spatial evolutionary game theory to optimal resource allocation in plants where cooperators are plants investing in defense and defectors are plants that do not. A nonlinear mathematical model to study the effect of transmission dynamics of COVID-19 virus in a population with variable size structure is proposed and analyzed. The model divides the total human population into five subclasses: susceptibles, self-protected susceptibles, infectives, quarantined infectives, and recovered population including a class representing cumulative density of coronavirus in the environmental reservoir. The model exhibits two equilibria, namely, the diseasefree and the endemic equilibrium. Model analysis reveals the global dynamics of the spread of COVID-19 is completely determined by the basic reproduction number.
