Estimates Of Genetic Parameters For Different Body Weights Andmuscle And Fat Depths Of Karayaka Lambs, YÜKSEL AKSOY, ZAFER ULUTAŞ, UĞUR ŞEN, EMRE ŞİRİN, AZİZ ŞAHİN 2016 TÜBİTAK

Estimates Of Genetic Parameters For Different Body Weights Andmuscle And Fat Depths Of Karayaka Lambs, Yüksel Aksoy, Zafer Ulutaş, Uğur Şen, Emre Şi̇ri̇n, Azi̇z Şahi̇n

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

In the current paper the direct additive and maternal genetic effects on birth, weaning (at 90 days of age), and scanning (at 20 weeks of age) weights and muscle and fat depths of the ribeye area in Karayaka lambs were investigated. Analyses were carried out by the restricted maximum likelihood approach, fitting 6 animal models with various combinations of direct and maternal effects. The best model was chosen after testing for improvement in the log-likelihood values. Direct heritability (h2d) for all traits decreased when maternal genetic effects were included in the models. The maternal heritability (h2m) ranged from 0.15 to …

The mares were examined over two study seasons. Ultrasonography and gynecological examinations were performed for all mares that were unable to conceive during the previous season and mares for which pregnancy was not achieved even after mating with stallions three times during each season. Endometrial swab samples were also obtained for microbiological examination. Cytology and endometrial biopsy samples were obtained from all mares in the first study season. The Effect Of Dgat1 Polymorphism On Milk Production Traits In Dairycows Depending On Environmental Temperature, JOLANTA KOMISAREK, MATEUSZ KOLENDA 2016 TÜBİTAK

The Effect Of Dgat1 Polymorphism On Milk Production Traits In Dairycows Depending On Environmental Temperature, Jolanta Komisarek, Mateusz Kolenda

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

It has long been known that a hot environment negatively influences milk production in cattle. Although molecular mechanisms underlying this phenomenon to a great extent remain to be recognized, they include alterations in lipid metabolism. DGAT1 plays a key role in the synthesis of triacylglycerols and polymorphism of this gene has been proven to have a pronounced influence on milk production. The aim of this study was to establish if the effect of DGAT1:p.K232A on milk-related traits is dependent on environmental thermal conditions. The analysis, performed on 468 cows of the Polish Holstein-Friesian breed, showed that allele DGAT1:K232 significantly increased …

Metabolic diseases such as enzootic ataxia, white muscle disease, and white liver disease are among the most important problems of livestock for sheep. The aim of this study was to analyze whether tears can be used as an alternative diagnostic method in determination of diseases that result from lack or excess of copper, selenium, and cobalt. Samples of serum and tears taken from 45 healthy sheep of the Kivircik breed aged between 2 and 4 years were analyzed. The concentrations of copper, selenium, and cobalt were measured in serum and tears as 118.0 ± 36.0, 58.0 ± 15.0, and 0.5 …

Postnatal Expression Profiles Of Phospholipid Hydroperoxide Glutathioneperoxidase In Spermatogenesis In Mice, Ki Youn Jung, Chunmei Lin, Jung-Min Yon, A Young Jung, Seul Gi Park, Sl Bi Chu, Lee Wha Gwon, Sang Yoon Nam

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

Phospholipid hydroperoxide glutathione peroxidase (PHGPx) is known to be an antioxidant enzyme that may be implicated in spermatogenesis, but its functional significance in the development of testes remains poorly understood. To demonstrate the roles of PHGPx in spermatogenesis during postnatal development, expression profiles of PHGPx mRNA and protein in testes and epididymides obtained from mice 1-9 and 27 weeks after birth were spatiotemporally analyzed. In testes, PHGPx mRNA first appeared in 2-week-old mice, while its protein was first detected in late spermatocytes and round spermatids from 3-week-old mice and levels were greatly increased in elongated spermatids and immature spermatozoa of …

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

In vitro fertilization is a common method of fertilization in the case of both humans and animals. Although this method has developed very rapidly, there are still many unanswered questions about the optimal characteristics that oocytes should have for performing this procedure. The object of this study was to describe the correlation between the diameter and size of swine oocytes in relation to pubescence. The research was conducted on ovaries of piglets (n = 65) and adult swine (n = 69). Each oocyte was examined with and without the zona pellucida. The analysis showed that the average size of the …

Purification Of Avian Influenza Virus (H9n2) From Allantoic Fluidby Size-Exclusion Chromatography, Ali Nazari Shirvan, Maedeh Samianifard, Naser Ghodsian

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

Avian influenza viruses represent a rising threat of pandemic influenza. Allantoic fluid including influenza virus H9N2 was run on downstream processing to purify the virus. To do this, allantoic fluid was clarified and concentrated. It was applied to size exclusion chromatography. Different parameters such as ovalbumin, protein content, and hemagglutinin activity were determined to confirm the purity. The results may suggest that this method is quite efficient for achieving a purified H9N2 influenza virus and further reveal that size-exclusion chromatography is a practical method for purifying avian influenza viruses. In conclusion, this procedure can be used in vaccine production and …

Merkel cell tumors, a type of cutaneous round-cell tumors, are rarely observed in dogs and cats. This tumor type originates from cutaneous neuroendocrine cells. In the present study, the morphology of canine and feline Merkel cell tumors and their immunoexpression of neuron-specific enolase, cytokeratin, chromogranin A, Ki67, and metallothionein were evaluated using histopathological and immunohistochemical methods. The canine Merkel cell tumor displayed a diffuse morphological pattern, whereas the feline tumor displayed a solid morphological pattern. Both tumors were positive for neuron-specific enolase and cytokeratin, but negative for chromogranin A. The Ki67 indexes in the canine and feline tumors were 7% …

Presence Of Carbohydrate-Digesting Enzymes Throughout The Digestive Tract Of Sheep, Renata Miltko, Grzegorz Belzecki, Barbara Kowalik, Jacek Skomial

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

The activity of enzymes that digest carbohydrates at various points in the gastrointestinal tract of sheep was examined. In addition, weight and contents of digestive tract segments were examined. The experiment was performed on six adult ewes fed an 85% hay diet. The morphometric measurements revealed that the alimentary tract constituted 32% of the sheep's body mass and wet rumen contents constituted 70% of wet mass of the total digestive tract content. The protozoal population in the rumen varied from 37.2 × 104 to 54.0 × 104/mL rumen fluid. In the examined samples, ciliates were identified as belonging to the …

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

The efficacy of diets containing 40%-50% wheat, barley, or oat grains, fermented by a solid-state fermentation process, on bird performance, carcass yield, digestive organ development, and intestinal viscosity was tested. Compared with broiler chicks fed unfermented grains, those fed fermented oats had increased feed intake, and treatment with fermented wheat and barley improved the feed conversion ratio at days 21 and 42. Treatment with fermented barley and oats resulted in increased body weight at day 42. Treatment with fermented wheat and oats increased the percentage of carcass yield. Birds fed unfermented grains had highly viscous digesta, not seen among birds …
