High Level Of Fluctuating Asymmetry In The Byzantine Dogs From The Theodosius Harbor,Istanbul, Turkey, Abu B. Siddiq, Pere M Pares Casanova, Öğül Emre Öncü, Hakan Kar, Vedat Onar
Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
Asymmetry, the abnormality of an organism or a part of it from its perfect symmetry, is represented by three different categories: fluctuating asymmetry, directional asymmetry, and antisymmetry. Fluctuating asymmetry attributes to random developmental variation of a morphological character, whereas directional asymmetry attributes one of the body sides to be more prominent than the other. Antisymmetry appears whenever one body side of a biological body shows greater morphological appearance than the other. Since more environmental stress often produces greater effect of fluctuating asymmetry, it can be a good indicator of physiological stress in the morphological characteristic of a biological being. Applying, …
Isolation And Identification Of Clostridium Difficile From Cases Of Diarrhea In Young Farmanimals, And The Determination Of Antimicrobial Susceptibility, Edi̇z Kağan Özgen, Murat Yildirim
Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
Clostridium difficile was isolated for the first time in 1935 from fecal samples of infants, although it was not until 1978 that its pathogenicity started to be considered, when it was shown to cause antibiotic-associated diarrhea and pseudomembranous colitis. In this study, it was aimed to determine the virulence and antibiotic resistance profiles of C. dificile in young ruminants with diarrhea and chickens fed on the farm. A total of 200 fecal samples (50 from calves, 50 from lambs and 50 from kid goats with neonatal diarrhea, as well as 50 cloacal swab samples taken from chickens) were taken and …

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
The maintenance of corneal and normal eye function is necessary for the ocular health and integrity. Tear plays an important role in defense mechanism and nutrition of eye. The Schirmer tear tests (STT I, II) are widely used in ophthalmic examination to evaluate tear production as an aid to diagnose eye diseases. The aim of this study was to compare the different effect of anesthetic combinations and their action period on tear production in healthy rabbits. Forty healthy New Zealand female rabbits (mean weight 2.34 ± 0.67 kg), four months old, were used as materials. The animals were divided into …

Molecular Characterization Of Vp2 And Vp3 Proteins Of Chicken Anemia Virus Isolates Inturkey, Sezer Okay, Şi̇nasi̇ Aşkar
Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
Chicken anemia virus (CAV) has a circular 2.3 kb DNA genome encoding VP1, VP2, and VP3 proteins. VP1 protein is assembled into viral capsid. VP2 is a nonstructural protein required for the correct assembly of VP1. Also, there is an interaction between VP2 and VP3 protein, known as apoptin. Mostly, VP1 protein of CAV isolates have been investigated in previous studies but the information about VP2 and VP3 proteins is insufficient. The aim of this study is molecular characterization of VP2 and VP3 proteins from 20 CAV isolates previously collected in different regions of Turkey using in silico tools. The …

Insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) acts on the development of internal organs such as the small intestine and muscle in all animal species. Similar to IGF-1, GH is also essential for growth and is an effective hormone on intestinal development during neonatal period. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of diarrhea on IGF-1 and GH hormones in lambs with intestinal inflammation up to 63 days of age. The study material consisted of 15 healthy and 15 diarrheic lambs. Blood and fecal samples were collected on the first day of life and on the 7th, 14th, 21st, 35th, …

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
Bone healing is a different and unique process that results in complete bone tissue, rather than ending in scar formation. However, more significant bone defects may fail to regenerate and forms scary granulomatous tissue. This study aimed to investigate the efficacy of transforming growth factor-ß (TGF - ß) via platelet rich plasma (PRP) in rabbit tibia bones with segmental bone defects by radiological and immunohistological methods. Tibial segmental defects were performed to adult New Zealand rabbits (n = 10) on both legs. 0.5 mL of PRP was administered to the defect zone on one leg (PRP group), while the other …

This study searched the functional, macro- and microvascular anatomy of the ocular bulb in the 20 wild pigs to evaluate the effects of domestication on the eye comparatively by applying macroanatomical dissection techniques, Crossmon?s modified triple staining technique, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) through corrosion cast technique. The ocular bulb was vascularized by the internal ophthalmic artery along with the external ophthalmic artery. Erythrocytes were observed in the capillaries of the inner layers of the retina. Distinctive functional adaptations were documented in the microvasculature of the ocular components, such as the marginal capillaries with irregular enlargements and narrowings following parallelly …

This paper reviewed the effects of in ovo feeding application on incubation performance and chick quality in broilers. Effectiveness of incubation and chick quality in commercial chicken broiler production have a decisive role in production cost as well as efficiency and are a prerequisite for sustainable production. To date, several studies have been done to improve incubation performance and chick quality, and significant gains have been achieved in this area in the last fifty years. The average hatchability and survivability in the sector have reached 85%-90% and 90%-95% respectively, and with new research, theoretical limits have been closely approached. In …

For successful fertilization, a transfer system named "rapid sperm transport" generated by uterine contractions plays a crucial role. The purpose of this in vivo study was to investigate the effect of buserelin, a GnRH agonist widely used for ovulation induction after mating or artificial insemination, on bovine uterine contractility which supports rapid sperm transport at estrus. In vivo uterine contractile activity was measured by intrauterine pressure recording technique. In the study, the spontaneous uterine contractile activities of 28 cows at estrus were observed for 30 min. The cows were randomly divided into 4 treatment groups which have 7 cows each …

Serum lysozyme gene empowers the immune system due to its bacteriolytic property targeting peptidoglycan layer of cell wall. Polymorphs of serum lysozyme gene are reported to be significantly associated with disease resistance traits. Two different gene fragments viz. fragment I (275 bp) and fragment II (230 bp) of serum lysozyme gene were amplified and screened by polymerase chain reaction-single strand conformation polymorphism (PCR-SSCP) technique to identify genetic variation in two different goat breeds (Barbari and Marwari) of India. The serum lysozyme activity of different genotypes and mRNA expression across the breed was also estimated. In fragment I, four genotypes (AA, …

Genetic Relationships Of Thrace And Yığılca Honey Bee Populations Based Onmicrosatellite Structure, Meral Kekeçoğlu, Emel Özkan Ünal, Mehmet İhsan Soysal
Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
Thrace and Yığılca honey bees, two important honey bee ecotypes in apicultural activity of Turkey, are the subject of genetic conservation effort. In this study, the genetic structure and diversity of honey bee populations from Thrace and Yığılca were investigated using 27 microsatellites. Except Kırklareli and Yığılca (Fst: 0.14), it was observed lower genetic divergence between the populations based on the value of pairwise Fst. Although Thrace populations (Edirne, Tekirdağ and Kırklareli) were not fully separated from each other, Yığılca population was significantly separated from Kırklareli and separated slightly from the rest of other populations. The calculated gene diversity of …
