Human Trafficking: Empowering Healthcare Providers And Community Partners As Advocates For Victims, Marielle A. Combs
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
Human trafficking (HT) is a public health crisis and the need for education is dire. Healthcare providers lack confidence in victim recognition and aid provision all while encountering victims in their practice. The project leader aimed to empower healthcare providers in recognizing signs of HT and making appropriate referrals. Ten community volunteers, including registered nurses, who assist with a mobile medical unit and spiritual 12-step program, participated in a Human Trafficking 101 training. The application of holistic nursing core principles and Human Caring Science was integrated as vital in victim identification. A pretest posttest design was utilized to administer the …

Oral Chemotherapy: Safe Handling In The Home, 2020 The University of San Francisco
Oral Chemotherapy: Safe Handling In The Home, Cynthia Huff
DNP Qualifying Manuscripts
Background: According to the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (2016), oral anticancer agents (OAC) are hazardous drugs (HD) and require the same safe handling interventions in the home setting as in controlled health care environments. The use of a safe handling checklist for OAC administration is a way nurses can provide safe handling education to patients and caregivers and assess for understanding and competency for critical tasks. Effective home management strategies outlining caregiver protections, proper storage, administration of OACs, spill clean-up, and waste disposal could reduce exposure risks to toxic agents.
Objective: To present a safe-handling checklist …

Usp <800> Compliance: A Hazardous Drug Safe Handling Ppe Toolkit For Infusion Nurses, Cynthia Huff
Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Projects
Problem: Safety concerns have existed for more than 40 years about how hazardous drug (HD) exposure contributes to long- and short-term adverse health outcomes for healthcare workers (HCWs). Careless handling may cause toxic residues to infiltrate hospital environments and patient care areas, and can even be traced to patients’ homes. New government regulations will require healthcare organizations to minimize exposure risks to HCWs by fully implementing the U.S. Pharmacopeia (USP) Convention Chapter 800: Hazardous Drugs: Handling in Healthcare Settings (USP, 2016) on December 1, 2019. According to Polovich and Olsen (2017), “The implementation of the USP <800> Standards will represent …800>

Supporting Academic Primary Care Teams Serving Refugees: A Qualitative Study, Gabrielle Waclawik Md Mph, Fabiana Kotovicz, Devin Walsh-Felz Md Mph, Savitri Tsering Mssw, Nancy Pandhi Md Mph Phd
Journal of Refugee & Global Health
Introduction: Primary care providers continue to experience significant challenges when caring for refugee patients, yet they are often refugees’ initial point of contact with the U.S. health care system. The purpose of this qualitative study is to expand our understanding of the experiences of academic primary care team members during clinical encounters with refugee patients.
Methods: This multi-perspective, qualitative study included physicians (faculty and residents), nurse practitioners, pharmacists, nurses, and medical assistants (n=10), who have been working with refugee patients for at least one year at two family medicine residency clinics and/or a community health center. Semi-structured in-person interviews were …
Ethical Aspects Of Covid-19 Antibody Testing, 2020 University of Louisville
Ethical Aspects Of Covid-19 Antibody Testing, Stephen S. Hanson, Demetra Antimisiaris
The University of Louisville Journal of Respiratory Infections
One common COVID-19 test is the test for one or more of the antibodies that the body creates when it encounters the SARS-CoV-2 virus. Because these tests are often point-of-care, rapid tests that require only a blood sample, they may appear to patients to be an easily accessible and useful tool to guide their actions in the pandemic. However, serologic antibody tests should not be offered to patients in normal practice under nearly any circumstances. They are useful in narrow diagnostic settings in later stage infections, and they serve an important public health function, but they are not of benefit …
Empowering Nurses Of Minority In The Face Of Incivility And Bullying: Through The Lens Of Phenomenology, 2020 University of Missouri-St. Louis
Empowering Nurses Of Minority In The Face Of Incivility And Bullying: Through The Lens Of Phenomenology, Corrine Floyd
Dissertations
Abstract
Up to 85% of nurses have reported exposure to incivility in the workplace (Hunt & Marini, 2012). The often-subtle nature of incivility toward nurses in a minority population may partially explain why it remains a problem. Healthcare organizations realize the need for civility to counter the high turnover rate, staff shortages, and low job satisfaction reported by nurses, but lack understanding of how nurses of a minority population perceive incivility and bullying. This study aimed to answer the research question how do nurses with minority representation experience incivility and bullying versus empowerment in the workplace? A descriptive phenomenological design …
A Retrospective Analysis Of Sex Education Messages Received By Lgb Youth, 2020 Illinois State University
A Retrospective Analysis Of Sex Education Messages Received By Lgb Youth, Jacqueline Bible, Alejandra Kaplan, Lisa D. Lieberman, Eva Goldfarb
Department of Public Health Scholarship and Creative Works
Using focus groups, this qualitative study asked thirty-five gay, lesbian, and bisexual (LGB) young adults to reflect on messages they received about sex and sexuality around the time they first had sex. Focus groups were conducted, recorded, transcribed, and analyzed. Through thematic analysis, the authors identified two messaging sources identified by participants: (1) formal education sources (i.e., school and parents), and (2) informal education sources (e.g., internet, peers). Formal sources often included messages perpetuating heteronormative assumptions, emphasizing abstinence, pregnancy and HIV/STI prevention, or silence as a form of messaging. Informal sources consisted of LGB-specific information. These findings suggest informal sources …

State-Level Income Inequality And The Odds For Meeting Fruit And Vegetable Recommendations Among Us Adults, Masako Horino, Sze Yan Liu, Eun-Young Lee, Ichiro Kawachi, Roman Pabayo
Department of Public Health Scholarship and Creative Works
Background
Previous research indicates that income inequality is associated with risk for mortality, self-rated health status, chronic conditions, and health behavior, such as physical activity. However, little is known about the relationship between income inequality and dietary intake, which is a major risk factor for common chronic diseases including heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and certain types of cancers. The objective of this study is to determine the association between US state income inequality and fruit and vegetable consumption among adults.
Methods
Cross-sectional data on 270,612 U.S. adults from the U.S. 2013 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System was used. Fruit and …
Factors Associated With Binge Drinking During The Transition Into Adulthood: Exploring Associations Within Two Distinct Young Adult Age Ranges, 2020 Montclair State University
Factors Associated With Binge Drinking During The Transition Into Adulthood: Exploring Associations Within Two Distinct Young Adult Age Ranges, Tamara Leech, Sarah Jacobs, Denis Watson
Department of Public Health Scholarship and Creative Works
Background:
Binge drinking among young adults aged 18-21 years has declined over the past decade, but binge drinking rates among people 22-25 years old have remained largely the same. This steady trend in later years represents a departure from the traditional course of maturing out of risky alcohol use, perhaps because young adults are delaying the transition into adulthood.
Aims:
This paper explores the relationship between binge drinking and aspects of the transition into adulthood that could inform interventions targeting these two distinct groups of young adults.
Methods:
We use survey data on 1,081 young adults aged 18-25 living in …
Collaborative Strategies To Reduce Incomplete Operating Room Instruments Trays, 2020 Maine Medical Center
Collaborative Strategies To Reduce Incomplete Operating Room Instruments Trays, Richard Neusch, Nicole Wagner, Colby Fike, Suneela Nayak
Operational Transformation
In an academic tertiary medical care center, the OR was receiving incomplete instrument trays. This issue became increasingly problematic in wasted staff time and cost to the institution.
Using a tracking system to generate a missing instrument report, baseline metrics were established. Reviewing each report, an interdepartmental team comprised of members of the OR and sterile processing departments, initiated a number of countermeasures.
Since the start of these countermeasures, there has been a reduction in the receipt of incomplete OR trays. Next steps include creating a tag process by which the OR instrument trays from one case would be kept …

Department of Public Health Scholarship and Creative Works
Public housing provides affordable housing and, potentially, housing stability for low-income families. Housing stability may be associated with lower incidence or prevalence and better management of a range of health conditions through many mechanisms. We aimed to test the hypotheses that public housing residency is associated with both housing stability and reduced risk of diabetes incidence, and the relationship between public housing and diabetes risk varies by levels of housing stability. Using 2004-16 World Trade Center Health Registry data, we compared outcomes (housing stability measured by sequence analysis of addresses, self-reported diabetes diagnoses) between 730 New York City public housing …

Intimate Partner Violence (Ipv): Clinical And Societal Perspectives, Marudan Sivagurunathan
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) can have a lasting impact on survivors’ emotional, physical, and psychological wellbeing. IPV is multifaceted and can influence survivors’ interactions across various institutions, including healthcare settings. This PhD project consists of both qualitative and quantitative studies aimed at exploring the clinical and societal perspectives around IPV.
Study #1 sought to explore the discourses around male IPV drawn from a social networking site (Reddit.com). While some areas related to IPV are well researched, studies on male intimate partner violence survivors are limited. The results from study #1 show that male IPV disclosure is a complex process. While …
