Our team is engaged with leaders from multidisciplinary departments that are working on improvement projects, ranging from marketing and messaging materials, physical plant changes, hardwiring best practices in communication and patient engagement. Our goal is to assist department leaders by improving and enhancing communication between patients, families and staff and always keeping the patient voice present on behalf of our community.

Mental health conditions are a top medical complication of pregnancy and childbirth and are associated with a range of adverse maternal and child outcomes. Approximately 1 in 7 to 1 in 4 birthing people experience symptoms of a mental health condition during pregnancy or postpartum, yet few are diagnosed or treated. There remain critical knowledge gaps and significant challenges to adequately addressing maternal mental health. Physician burnout affects healthcare organizations at every level and has been associated with higher self-reported errors, increased turnover, and has a negative impact on patient care; it is estimated that tens of thousands of Americans die each year as a result ofpreventable medical errors. This project seeks to reduce the symptoms of physician burnout by exploring Acceptance Commitment Therapy (ACT) compared to Body Mapping as effective interventions in preventing and mitigating burnout in physician trainees at Henry Ford Health (HFH) in Detroit, Michigan.

Henry Ford’s Patient Engaged Research Center (PERC): Our mission is to translate the patient voice into evidence-based care through community engagement and world-class research methods. PERC Patient Advisor Program: PERC relies on active participation of its Patient Advisors (PAs) in the Patient Advisor Program (the Program). PAs contribute their patient and/or caregiver experience and feedback to HFH projects and initiatives to ensure care is patient-centered. COVID-19: Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Program adapted virtual participation in order to continue to engage PAs. PEIR involves patients undertaking roles beyond those of traditional study participants by including them throughout the entire research process. Participating on the PEPC Committee is an opportunity to observe the exchange of information with leaders who are in positions to act on Quality Improvement (QI) projects/clinical research(CR) results to expand scope, encourage spread, and share resources. As Patient Advisors we use the lenses of our personal identities, work history, and life experiences to provide perspective for the patients’ voices. We see the barriers of the patient-clinician relationship that don’t address the power differential and make assumptions (unconscious bias) that affect adherence and outcomes of care.

Medical tourism is a process in which a consumer travels from one’s health jurisdiction to receive biomedical treatments or services, thus becoming a patient. This chapter explores how global media frame cases of patient death associated with the medical tourism (MT) process between 2009-2019. A qualitative content analysis of 50 patient mortality cases found that (1) a majority of media representations of medical tourism patient death are of middle-class, minority females between 25-55 years of age seeking cosmetic surgery internationally; (2) sudden death, grief, and bereavement counseling is noticeably absent from medical tourism providers (MTPs); and (3) the acknowledgement of …

Introduction: Health outcomes for Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait peoples are very poor. This is considerably worse in remote regions. The East Pilbara, where the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities of the Martu and Nyiyaparli people reside, is one such remote region.

Methods: This review explored the grey literature relating to the health services and health outcomes of the Martu and Nyiyaparli people. The New York FIDA-IDD demonstration was launched in 2016 in nine downstate counties and was the first comprehensive managed care demonstration exclusively serving individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) in the nation. Due at least in part to a lack of provider participation, less than 8 percent of eligible beneficiaries enrolled. Beneficiaries who did enroll reported high levels of satisfaction, especially with care coordination and the ease of obtaining durable medical equipment. The MedicareMedicaid Plan’s (MMP) assessment and care coordination model provided person-centered care planning that identified goals and helped to achieve them, improving enrollees’ quality of life. Background: To guide the treatment with monoclonal antibodies (MAbs) against the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) of metastatic colorectal cancer (mCRC), the FDA recommends prior companion molecular diagnosis (CMDx). It initially recommended screening for mutations in exon 2 of the KRAS gene, and most recently to extend to screening to exons 2, 3, and 4 of KRAS and 2, 3, and 4 of NRAS genes; furthermore, to evaluate the BRAF exon 15 mutation status (including V600E). To date, no studies have been done to compare the cost-benefit of these different CMDXs.

Introduction: Addressing complex health and social needs requires cross-sector collaboration to deliver medical, social, and population health services at the community level. Capacity in community health and social services networks may be constrained in regions like Appalachia due to the combined effects of rurality and persistently poor health and social outcomes. One way that cross-sector networks serving low-resource communities can expand their capacity is by engaging partners, like health insurers, who can leverage resources from outside the local area.

Introduction: Previous studies have documented geographic variation in preventable hospitalizations between rural and urban areas, but much less is known about preventable hospitalization patterns between heterogeneous rural areas. Unique challenges related to access of care and poverty may put the rural Appalachian Region at risk for higher rates of preventable hospitalizations.

Introduction: Those living in the Appalachian Region face a greater number of significant health disparities than residents of other areas of the U.S. Patient portals can decrease disparities, increase health literacy, and improve health outcomes.

Purpose: This study explores if those living in the Appalachian Region are offered access to and use their patient portals differently than those in the surrounding U.S. Census regions.
