The Government of Uganda has focused attention on the problem of orphaned and other vulnerable children through a number of policies, regulations, and initiatives. In 2004, the Ministry of Gender Labor and Social Development developed the National OVC Policy, aimed at improving the quality of life for poor and vulnerable children, such as children who have been orphaned, children who are living on the streets, children who are at risk of abuse, and children exposed to situations of armed conflict. Many patients suffering from mental disorders, when exposed to psychotropic medications, gain significant weight with or without other side effects. In addition to reducing the patients’ willingness to comply with treatment, this weight gain may create added psychological or physiological problems that need to be addressed. AIM: Duration of untreated psychosis (DUP), which has emerged as a reliable predictor of outcome continues to remain under scientific scrutiny . The present study examines effect of differential periods of DUP on long-term outcome of first episode schizophrenia at Mumbai, India. Method: This is a prospective, ten year follow up naturalistic study. Hospitalized patients of first episode schizophrenia were selected and followed up Results: The mean DUP was higher for group, which showed clinical recovery on Clinical Global Impression Scale [14.0 months (SD=8.0) in recovered and 10.8 months (SD=5.7) in non-recovered group (p=0.091)]. Epidemiological studies suggest that young people might have a tendency to avoid help when they experience symptoms of psychological distress. There is growing evidence that many young people prefer no help from anyone for their mental health problems. The current study examined the association between symptoms of general psychological distress and intentions to seek help from friends, family and professional mental health sources in a sample of 109 trade (TAFE) students from regional and rural Australia. BACKGROUND: Critical moments in operations cause the surgeon to transition from a relatively "automatic" mode of operating to a more attentive mode-previously referred to as "slowing down when you should." Using this framework, this study explored how academic surgeons manage and balance the often competing responsibilities of patient safety and education during the slowing-down moments.

The current study is part of a larger multi-cite research program developed and led by the first author.
