Treatment experiences for prostate cancer survivors can be challenging and dependent on many clinical and psychosocial factors. One area that is less understood is the information needs and sources men utilize. Among these is the influence of religion as a valid typology and the value it may have on treatment decisions. The objective of this study was to assess the relationship between race, religion, and cancer treatment decisions in African American men compared with White men. Data were from the Diagnosis and Decisions in Prostate Cancer Treatment Outcomes Study that consisted of 877 African American and White men. The main …

Intergenerational Living Between College Students And Senior Housing Residents: A Framework, Laura Allen 2017 Western Kentucky University

Intergenerational Living Between College Students And Senior Housing Residents: A Framework, Laura Allen

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

Ageism, the discrimination against persons of a certain age group, is one of the most important civil rights issues of the 21st century (Palmore, 2015). There are community-wide and personal strategies to combatting ageism. Homesharing and cohousing each offer concepts that can be utilized in intergenerational living because of their housing infrastructure. The relationship between college students and senior housing residents is unique because both groups are experiencing a season of life with common characteristics. This project aims to understand the relationship and tensions between stakeholders of existing intergenerational living programs to develop an implementation plan for a program at …

Immunizations And Health Disparities: Immunizations Provided Across A Diverse Population, Jeffery A. Goad, Tania Gregorian

Pharmacy Faculty Articles and Research

"Vaccines help contain the spread of diseases and reduce morbidity and mortality. For any vaccination effort to succeed, vaccine uptake must be widespread across the entire population. However, the US population is very diverse, and there are various groups with different attitudes and beliefs regarding vaccination; this leads to disparities in vaccination rates. The Healthy People initiative, a program managed by Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion at the US Department of Health and Human Services HHS that aims to provide Americans with evidence-based, 10-year national objectives for improving their health defines a disparity in health care as 'a …

After Closure: Options For Pursuing A High Performance Rural Health System, Andrew F. Coburn PhD 2017 University of Southern Maine, Muskie School of Public Service, Maine Rural Health Research Center

After Closure: Options For Pursuing A High Performance Rural Health System, Andrew F. Coburn Phd

Rural Hospitals (Flex Program)

Presented at the 2017 National Rural Health Association Annual Meeting. Coburn, a member of the Rural Policy Research Institute Panel, discussed the following key questions: What kind of rural health system is possible in places that cannot support a full-service hospital? How does a rural community navigate the transition from hospital-centric care toward new models that deliver high performance? What implementation support will be needed? Coburn noted that there is no single model for re-configuring the rural health system after hospital closure; local assets, affiliations and partnerships, financial and delivery flexibility and capacities must be critically assessed to determine the …

This new survey has been implemented to collect data on patients’ experiences in the MMP outpatient facilities, and is offered to the patients via iPad at check-out after their appointment. Through observation at MMP practices and MMP staff interviews, strengths and weaknesses of the implementation process have been identified. Evidence-based solutions pertaining to the identified weaknesses have been selected through a literature review and are incorporated in recommendations …

Meaningful Use Of Electronic Health Records For Population Health Management In U.S. Acute Care Hospitals, Niodita Gupta 2017 University of Nebraska Medical Center

Meaningful Use Of Electronic Health Records For Population Health Management In U.S. Acute Care Hospitals, Niodita Gupta

Theses & Dissertations

Population health management (PHM) is used to identify the needs of a population and to align strategies to improve the health of the population through care coordination. The Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health (HITECH) Act of 2009 emphasized the meaningful use (MU) of electronic health records (EHRs) to improve clinical and population health outcomes. The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) of 2009 approved the EHRs incentives program for eligible hospitals to demonstrate the MU of EHRs. Further, eligible hospitals which failed to demonstrate the MU of EHRs could face payment adjustments. Given a heightened focus on …

Common Histories And Common Failures: How The Historical Events Of Ireland And The United States Have Led To Their Vastly Different, Equally Failing, Health Care Systems, Kimberly Narro

Senior Theses

The United States healthcare system is a constant source of debate and public interest, with the only common ground between political parties being that the current system is deeply flawed and needing improvement. Individuals often point to European single-payer systems as the answer, neglecting to mention the flaws also inherent in these systems. This thesis aims to suss out the successes and failings of the Irish and American healthcare systems through a thorough scholarly literature review, with an emphasis on the two countries’ origins and development, to lead to a discussion about why two countries with similar historical beginnings have …

Encouraging Medicare Advantage Enrollees To Switch To Higher Quality Plans: Assessing The Effectiveness Of A ‘‘Nudge’’ Letter, Benjamin L. Howell, Partha Deb, Sai Ma, Rachel O. Reid, Jesse Levy, Gerald F. Riley, Patrick H. Conway, William H. Shrank

Publications and Research

There are considerable quality differences across private Medicare Advantage insurance plans, so it is important that beneficiaries make informed choices. During open enrollment for the 2013 coverage year, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services sent letters to beneficiaries enrolled in low-quality Medicare Advantage plans (i.e., plans rated less than 3 stars for at least 3 consecutive years by Medicare) explaining the stars and encouraging them to reexamine their choices. To understand the effectiveness of these low-cost, behavioral ‘‘nudge’’ letters, we used a beneficiary-level national retrospective cohort and performed multivariate regression analysis of plan selection during the 2013 open enrollment …

Occasional Papers on Religion in Eastern Europe

This article aims to build a potentially adaptable model of clinical pastoral care for Estonia’s healthcare institutions. To help the development of spiritual support provision in Estonian healthcare institutions, we are currently working on creating a model of clinical pastoral care that would be in accordance with the local circumstances. Preparatory research in the matter has addressed the socio-cultural and institutional context that shows the great need for interdisciplinary teamwork. The current article offers concrete proposals in the following main points: a) presentation of the pastoral caregiver; b) main actors; c) forms of cooperation; and c) education and internal trainings. …

Long-Term Sustainment Of Rapid Improvement Events: A Case Study In “Room Readiness”, Gabriela V. Coronel 2017 East Tennessee State University

Long-Term Sustainment Of Rapid Improvement Events: A Case Study In “Room Readiness”, Gabriela V. Coronel

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Shifting payment models from fee for service (FFS) to pay for performance (P4P) have fundamentally changed the environment of healthcare administration in the United States (Center for Medicaid and Medicare Services (CMS), 2011). Due to this shift, there has been an increase in demand for tracking and improving quality measures to ensure not only patient safety, but optimization of utilization. Constraints on resources and capacity, coupled with increasing safety measures has developed a new study of patient flow (Miró, Sánchez, Espinosa, et al., 2003). Decreasing patient room turnover times has the potential to maximize utilization while ensuring patient safety and …

Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Projects

Mentorship has widespread support among many disciplines for the impact on improved job satisfaction, decreased job turnover and decreased costs to organizations. Ongoing support through mentorship is critical to nurses transitioning to a new role and nurse mentors must be prepared for the role with relevant education tailored to their needs . Though literature describing training programs for mentors is limited, some studies have reported an increase in confidence among mentors after training. In addition, improved mentoring skills (that includes communication) is in literature.

In one large urban school district in Ohio, a school nurse, mentorship program was developed and …
