Times of severe economic flux may burdend individuals at differing levels. The Great Recession affected individuals differently by racial group. Vulnerable individuals who may already be burdened by economic strains and health disparities may benefit from state policies that work to improve the health and health care access of individuals. Medicaid Generosity for parents or childless adults is associated with differences in individuals' health status and reporting forgone medical care. The correlation between exposure to forms of violence and development of mental disorders in victims is well established. The purpose of this chapter was to identify mental health problems in an adolescent medicine clinic population in Lexington, Kentucky and to investigate potential correlation of mental disorders with psychosocial factors. Data were gathered from the charts of 169 adolescent clinic patients (age 10-22) seen in the clinic for mental health care and analyzed using Excel. Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the 3rd most prevalent cancer and 2nd leading cause of cancer death in the U.S. Colonoscopies have been recommended as the preferred screening method to prevent cancer by removing polyps before they transform into cancer. Although colonoscopy every 10 years is considered to be the preferred screening method, it is not perfect mainly owing to the variable quality of screening colonoscopy under community-based practice conditions. Although the effectiveness of colonoscopy in preventing CRC is documented, screening colonoscopy coverage in the US population remains low. Background. The U.S. healthcare movement to improve quality and patient outcomes has prompted investigations into tools that can assist in these aims. Electronic health records (EHRs) are one tool proposed by the Institute of Medicine (IOM). The objective of this original dissertation research was to examine the relationship between electronic health record functionalities and two outcomes of care as proxies for quality: risk-adjusted mortality for abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) repair, coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG), and percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) and log estimated cost-per-discharge. This paper describes how local health departments (LHDs) in Florida used the County Health Rankings over the first two years of their release (2010 – 2011). We surveyed LHD leadership to describe if, how and to what extent the Rankings were used by Florida’s 67 LHDs to improve the health of their communities and describe changes in use from the 2010 to the 2011 release. Our results indicate substantial use of the Rankings by Florida’s LHDs, particularly as applied to community health assessments, staff education, as a starting point for examining other indicators and databases, and in grant applications. The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act of 2010 and the Supreme Court’s related decision have significantly shifted the health care landscape for safety net providers. Federally qualified health centers (FQHCs) are a mainstay of primary care for the uninsured and those with limited access to care. This paper focuses on the impact of health reform on FQHCs given the significant federal investment in them through grants, Medicaid, and Medicare reimbursement. "CHOICES" Florida's version of ObamaCare was a unique case voted in by the public in Alachua County Florida. A mixed methods research design was utilized and provided context in which policy entrepreneurs operated, as well as an explanatory model of internal determinants. Social, economic and political factors were examined to determine the predictor variable in the adoption of the "CHOICES" health services program. The results revealed that voters 51 years of age and older had a greater probability of voting for the Alachua Referendum. "CHOICES" legality has not been under contention but its effectiveness has. When Hurricane Sandy hit downtown Manhattan, three neighboring hospitals each made different decisions about when to evacuate. Across the metro region, more than five hospitals and over 20 nursing and assisted living facilities were evacuated, making this the central public health challenge of this calamitous event. It is a familiar story—a super storm comes ashore, infrastructure is overwhelmed, and healthcare facilities evacuate patients, with major delays in returning to normal functioning. Afterwards, policy makers evaluate lessons learned for the next disaster, but similar missteps are often repeated.

To better understand the nature of the residential facilities serving more than 19 percent of Maine’s Long Term Services and Supports (LTSS) population, the Maine Department of Health and Human Services commissioned the Muskie School to conduct a survey of residential facilities as part of its update to Maine’s LTSS profile. The goal of the Maine Residential Settings Characteristics Survey, conducted between July and September 2010, was to measure the "homelike" characteristics of residential settings.

BACKGROUND: Delivery system research to identify how best to organize, finance, and implement health improvement strategies has focused heavily on clinical practice settings, with relatively little attention paid to public health settings-where research is made more difficult by wide heterogeneity in settings and limited sources of existing data and measures. This study examines the approaches used by public health practice-based research networks (PBRNs) to expand delivery system research and evidence-based practice in public health settings.

OBJECTIVES: The nation's public health delivery system comprises nearly 3000 local public health agencies that vary widely in capabilities. Economic pressures, workforce shortages, and new national accreditation standards are leading these agencies to explore mechanisms for pooling resources to enhance delivery and improve population health.

METHODS: A longitudinal cohort design is used to analyze changes in the availability and perceived effectiveness of services delivered by local public health providers. Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) affects women disproportionately, around the world and in South Africa.
