Sodium chloride aerosol was used for the comparisons. The sputter coating thickness, a conductive coating necessary for SEM, was measured …

Penetration Through The Staple Punctures On Five N95 Respirator Models, Daniel E. Medina 2014 University of South Florida

Penetration Through The Staple Punctures On Five N95 Respirator Models, Daniel E. Medina

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Certain N95 FFR models that staple the head straps directly onto filtering material are commercially available. This method of assembly can tear or reduce fiber density in the immediate area surrounding the staple punctures. Five N95 FFR models were evaluated to determine if staple punctures on the filter medium reduce the protection offered by the respirators.

Total penetrations were measured with the staple punctures intact and when stretching the head straps a distance equivalent to a 95% male head circumference. Filter penetration were measured by sealing the staple punctures. Aerosols of 200, 500, and 1000 nm were used to challenge …

Establishing Tobacco Origin From Pollen Identification: An Approach To Resolving The Debate, Shane Williams, Shelby Hubbard, Karl Reinhard, Sérgio Augusto de Miranda Chaves 2014 University of California Davis

Establishing Tobacco Origin From Pollen Identification: An Approach To Resolving The Debate, Shane Williams, Shelby Hubbard, Karl Reinhard, Sérgio Augusto De Miranda Chaves

Karl Reinhard Publications

Previous research into pollen content of tobacco resulted in a debate. We address this debate and determine that pollen analysis may be able to assist with identifying geographical origin of tobacco. However, the value of any results should be assessed on a case-by-case regional basis until sufficient database information is available for an objective interpretation to be undertaken on a global basis. As a first step toward developing comparative data for South America, we analyzed a tobacco sample from Brazil in an effort to identify signature taxa from the state of Minas Gerais. We also assessed the role of honey …

Applicator Exposure To Glycol Derivatives And Total Volatile Organic Compounds During The Application Of Spray Polyurethane Foam Insulation, Michael Brian Kaniuga 2014 University of South Florida

Applicator Exposure To Glycol Derivatives And Total Volatile Organic Compounds During The Application Of Spray Polyurethane Foam Insulation, Michael Brian Kaniuga

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

There is currently high demand for new building materials which are considered "environmentally friendly" or "green" for both new construction and renovations. Spray polyurethane foam (SPUF) insulation has gained significant acceptance by both consumers and the construction industry due to its high R-value, which results into significant energy savings among other things. Despite its acceptance by consumers and the construction industry, consideration must be given to potential chemical exposures to applicators installing these products.

This study sought to determine, through quantitative experimentation, if there was a release of glycol derivatives including, diethylene glycol (DEG), ethylene glycol (EG), and propylene glycol …

Characterization Of The Airborne Particulates Generated By A Spray Polyurethane Foam Insulation Kit, Loren Lee Foster 2014 University of South Florida

Characterization Of The Airborne Particulates Generated By A Spray Polyurethane Foam Insulation Kit, Loren Lee Foster

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Spray Polyurethane Foam insulation (SPF) kits are currently being marketed and sold to do-it-yourselfers to meet various insulating needs. Like commercial SPF systems, the primary health concern with SPF kits is user overexposure to the isocyanates during product application. The potential health risk associated with SPF applications is driven by several factors including (but not limited to): the toxicity of isocyanates; the potentially high exposure intensity; the quantity of isocyanates used in the process; the enclosed nature of the environment in which the product could be applied; the potentially high exposure duration/frequency; and the limited availability of control measures to …

Beyond Sustainability: A New Conceptual Model, Molly Kerby, Gayle Mallinger 2014 Western Kentucky University

Beyond Sustainability: A New Conceptual Model, Molly Kerby, Gayle Mallinger

Gender & Women's Studies Faculty Publications

Over the last few decades, the notion of sustainability has become an interdisciplinary buzz word. Sustainability has been an integrative concept that includes three constructs or pillars: a) social; b) economic; and c) ecological. Until recently, theoretical approaches based on the three pillars approach have operated in silos rather than exploring the interconnectedness of the constructs. Few models have moved beyond the idea that logical relations exist among the constructs (social, economic, and ecological) to consider factors external to communities, nor have they examined the internal socio-economic factors that influence positive outcomes. While this conceptualization has raised awareness about the …

White Paper: Electronic Cigarettes In The Indoor Environment, Cheryl L. Marcham, Et Al.

Publications

Dr. Marcham was the team leader of this project and was one of 14 members who created this white paper. Electronic-cigarettes (e-cigarettes) are battery-powered devices of many different configurations that deliver vaporized nicotine and other chemicals or flavorings to users, but that do not contain tobacco or require combustion. E-cigarettes have an internal, rechargeable, battery-operated heat source that converts liquid nicotine and/or flavorings into a mist or vapor that the user inhales. These devices are frequently promoted as a healthier or safer alternative to traditional cigarettes for users and bystanders. Consequently, there has been growing interest among manufacturers and others …

Publications and Research

Climate change is impacting agro-ecosystems, crops, and farmer livelihoods in communities worldwide. While it is well understood that more frequent and intense climate events in many areas are resulting in a decline in crop yields, the impact on crop quality is less acknowledged, yet it is critical for food systems that benefit both farmers and consumers through high-quality products. This study examines tea (Camellia sinensis; Theaceae), the world’s most widely consumed beverage after water, as a study system to measure effects of seasonal precipitation variability on crop functional quality and associated farmer knowledge, preferences, and livelihoods. Sampling was conducted in …

Background/Objective

Physical activity has been shown to be beneficial at improving health in some medical conditions and in preventing injury. Epidemiologic studies suggest that physical activity is one factor associated with a decreased risk for slips and falls in the older (≥65 years) adult population. While the risk of slips and falls is generally lower in younger than in older adults; little is known of the relative contribution of physical activity in preventing slips and falls in younger adults. We examined whether engagement in leisure-time physical activity (LTPA) was protective of slips and falls among a younger/middle-aged (≤50 years old) …

Influence Of Sex On Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease Risk And Treatment Outcomes, Shambhu Aryal, Enrique Diaz-Guzman, David M. Mannino

Preventive Medicine and Environmental Health Faculty Publications

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), one of the most common chronic diseases and a leading cause of death, has historically been considered a disease of men. However, there has been a rapid increase in the prevalence, morbidity, and mortality of COPD in women over the last two decades. This has largely been attributed to historical increases in tobacco consumption among women. But the influence of sex on COPD is complex and involves several other factors, including differential susceptibility to the effects of tobacco, anatomic, hormonal, and behavioral differences, and differential response to therapy. Interestingly, nonsmokers with COPD are more likely …
