Diabetic retinopathy (DR) and age-related macular degeneration (AMD) are among the most common causes of blindness in adults. Vision loss can occur during the advanced stages of DR and AMD as a consequence of unregulated and dysfunctional growth of new blood vessels, or neovascularization (NV) in the retina or choroid. NV can also be triggered by numerous other ocular insults and diseases including radiation retinopathy (RR) and retinal vein occlusion. These latter cases are generally less common but, like DR and AMD, they are characterized by an initial injury, chronic inflammation, and ischemia which perpetuates episodes of retinal neovascularization (RNV). …

The widespread emergence of resistance to currently used antibiotics is commonly attributed to an over use in our society. Such resistance, coupled with a lack of innovation and production of novel antibiotic drugs, threatens to return humanity to an era similar to one before the discovery of the first antibiotics. Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs), both prescription and over-the-counter, are widely used for the treatment of acid-related disease states such as dyspepsia, gastroesophageal reflex disease, esophagitis, and peptic ulcers. Vitamin K is known to play an essential role in the coagulation cascade; however, a growing body of research has found that a subtype of this vitamin, vitamin K₂ (menaquinone) may have a beneficial effect in osteoporosis, cardiovascular disease, and cancer. This purpose of this article is to provide a comprehensive review of recent literature regarding menaquinone and its role in human health. This review discusses the physiology of menaquinone, its clinical benefits in cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis, and cancer, and how it may interact with certain medications. PSA-TRICOM is a therapeutic vaccine in late stage clinical testing in metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer (mCRPC). Samarium-153-ethylene diamine tetramethylene phosphonate (Sm-153-EDTMP; Quadramet^®), a radiopharmaceutical, binds osteoblastic bone lesions and emits beta particles causing local tumor cell destruction. Preclinically, Sm-153-EDTMP alters tumor cell phenotype facilitating immune-mediated killing. This phase 2 multi-center trial randomized patients to Sm-153-EDTMP alone or with PSA-TRICOM vaccine. Eligibility required mCRPC, bone metastases, prior docetaxel and no visceral disease. The primary endpoint was the proportion of patients without radiographic disease progression at 4 months. Secondary endpoints included progression-free survival (PFS), overall survival (OS), and immune responses. …

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are potentially attractive candidates for cancer therapy. However, their therapeutic application is limited by lack of availability of an efficient delivery system to stably deliver these potent molecules intracellularly to cancer cells while avoiding healthy cells. We developed a novel aptamer-hybrid nanoparticle bioconjugate delivery system to selectively deliver miRNA-29b to MUC1-expressing cancer cells. Significant downregulation of oncoproteins DNMT3b and MCL1 was demonstrated by these MUC1 aptamer-functionalized hybrid nanoparticles in A549 cells. Furthermore, downregulation of these oncoproteins led to antiproliferative effect and induction of apoptosis in a superior version when compared with Lipofectamine 2000. Epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC) is the most lethal gynecological cancer and often is not detected until late stages when cancer cells transcoelomically metastasize to the abdomen and typically become resistant to therapy resulting in very low survival rates. We utilize an orthotopic, syngeneic mouse model to study late stage disease and have discovered that the tumor cells within the abdominal ascites are irreversibly re-programmed, with an increased tumorigenicity and resistance to apoptosis. Objectives: Evidence evaluating audience response systems (ARS) used in team-based learning (TBL) compared to traditional classes is limited. The objectives of this study are to evaluate student perceptions of the technology and compare students’ assessment of technology with their performance.

Method: TBL was implemented in the required self-care course (PP2120: Introduction to Pharmaceutical Care: Non-prescription drugs) at St. Louis College of Pharmacy, and an audience response system was implemented in Fall 2015. At the conclusion of the course, a web-based survey was administered to students.

Results: Of the 29 students who successfully completed the course, 23 (79%) completed the survey. …

Objectives: MyDispense is an interactive community pharmacy simulation program designed to build students’ confidence related to community pharmacy practice. MyDispense was implemented in the Advanced Pharmacy Practice course at St. Louis College of Pharmacy during the P3 year as an activity and assessment for competency in the community pharmacy setting. In order to make future curriculum improvements, the objective of this study is to evaluate the usefulness and applicability of the MyDispense program into a required course.

Objective: Evaluate impact of various admission criteria elements (cognitive, behavioral) as predictors of first-term college GPA and on-time graduation.

Methods & Results: Predictive models were developed to examine if the current admission criteria: high school GPA (HSGPA), ACT Composite score, interview score, etc are significant predictors for student success defined as first-term college GPA, on-time graduation among PharmD students at a direct entry private university. The study sample consisted of 395 pharmacy students matriculated as first-time freshmen students during fall 2007 through fall 2009. A composition and method to alleviate oral mucosal discomfort and irritation in an orthodontic patient. A wax matrix containing less that 15% analgesic/anesthetic agent such as benzocaine and excipients enhanced and extended release of the analgesic/anesthetic agent compared to known art formulations. The composition exhibited desirable aesthetic properties, was easy to apply, and the relatively lower concentration of active agent provided enhanced safety.

Computational methods are becoming essential in drug discovery as they provide information that traditional drug development methods lack. Using these methods to understand drug-receptor interactions in detail, researchers are able to efficiently design promising drug candidates. In this study, extra precision Glide docking, molecular dynamics simulations and MMGBSA binding energy calculations provided information about the binding behavior of small molecules to two specific targets for current cancer therapeutics: G-quadruplex DNA and Topoisomerase I enzyme. Editorial introduction to Natural Products For Infectious Diseases, the 2016 special issue of Evidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine, including 7 research articles and 1 review article addressing the efficacies of natural products for treating infectious diseases, such as infection by multidrug-resistant bacteria, viral influenza, coccidiosis, leishmaniasis, infectious septic shock, and biofilm formation. These articles represent pharmacological activity tests, investigation of action mechanisms of natural products, clinical trials with scientific statistical analyses, and phytochemical analyses of bioactive components in medicinal plants, which are important for scientific validation of the use of natural products in alternative and complimentary medicine.
