Pharmaceutical Sciences and Research

Soybean extract has known for its antiaging potential. The addition of soybean extract was predicted can influence the physical stability of the cream. Therefore, this research was aimed to test the physical stability of cream contained soybean extract in different concentration (2%, 4%, 6%, and 8%). The physical stability test including the storage for eight weeks at room temperature, high temperature (40°±2°C), and low temperature (4°±2°C). Stability parameters were the organoleptic observation, pH, globul size, viscosity, and cycling test. Those four cream formula showed good stability in organoleptic, pH, globul size, viscosity, and cycling test.

Exploring The Attitudes, Knowledge, And Receptivity Of Community-Working Pharmacists Regarding Two Over-The-Counter Medications (Otcs), Robin Spielmann, John Redwanski 2014 University of New England

Exploring The Attitudes, Knowledge, And Receptivity Of Community-Working Pharmacists Regarding Two Over-The-Counter Medications (Otcs), Robin Spielmann, John Redwanski

Pharmacy Practice Faculty Posters

Many patients go without access to contemporary or traditional Western medicine due to lack of quality health insurance. Thus, more patients are turning to other less expensive, alternative forms of treatment. Our analysis of several different community-pharmacies in Maine, Indiana, Ohio, and Kentucky showed that many practicing pharmacists know little about these types of alternative therapies, and make little effort answering questions and/or making a safe recommendation about these products. Two OTCs were chosen with purpose: Calcium with Vitamin D and Grape Seed Extract. A convenience sample of pharmacies and pharmacists were selected based on travel time and location. Pharmacists …

The Effect Of Pomegranate Juice Extract On The Hedgehog Signaling Pathway In Pancreatic Cancer, Veronica Gomez, Talia Shackelford, Autumn Tocchi, Melissa Rowland-Goldsmith 2014 Chapman University

The Effect Of Pomegranate Juice Extract On The Hedgehog Signaling Pathway In Pancreatic Cancer, Veronica Gomez, Talia Shackelford, Autumn Tocchi, Melissa Rowland-Goldsmith

e-Research: A Journal of Undergraduate Work

Pancreatic cancer is the fourth leading cause of cancer death in the United States. There have been several reports indicating that phytochemicals in fruits can reduce the risk of cancer due to the anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory effects of the polyphenols. Our lab has shown that pomegranate juice extract (PJE) has anti-proliferative and pro-apoptotic effects in human pancreatic cancer cells. In the past, we have shown that cells adhere more strongly to the plate when treated with PJE. This observation prompted an investigation of how PJE regulates cell adhesion proteins. Previously, our lab investigated E-cadherin, a cell adhesion protein. Upon activation …

Inhibition Of The Thioesterase Activity Of Human Fatty Acid Synthase By 1,4- And 9,10-Diones, Herman H. Odens 2014 Southern Adventist University

Inhibition Of The Thioesterase Activity Of Human Fatty Acid Synthase By 1,4- And 9,10-Diones, Herman H. Odens

Faculty Works

Fatty acid synthase (FASN) is the enzyme that synthesizes fatty acids de novo in human cells. Although FASN is generally expressed at low levels in most normal tissues, its expression is highly upregulated in many cancers. Consistent with this notion, inhibition of FASN activity has demonstrated potential to halt proliferation and induce cell death in vitro and to block tumor growth in vivo. Consequently, FASN is widely recognized as a valuable therapeutic target. In this report, we describe a variety of 1,4-quinones and 9,10- anthraquinones, including several natural compounds and some newly synthesized compounds, that potently inhibit the thioesterase (TE) …

Study Of Iridium Catalyzed N-Alkylation Of Urea With Benzyl Alcohols, Majed Abdullah Bajaber

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

The solvent-free (Cp*IrCl2)2 catalyzed N-alkylation of urea with benzyl alcohol has been studied. A variety of reaction conditions were studied and optimized to produce a high yield (82%) of N,N-dibenzylurea. A series of substituted benzyl alcohols were examined at the optimal reaction conditions. However, the preparation of substituted benzyl urea derivatives using conditions optimized for benzyl alcohol gave poor yields or intractable mixtures.

Chemical Profiling And Biological Activity Of Two Tunicate-Associated Marine Bacteria, Lyubina Yankova 2014 University of Connecticut - Storrs

Chemical Profiling And Biological Activity Of Two Tunicate-Associated Marine Bacteria, Lyubina Yankova

Honors Scholar Theses

Marine natural products have recently been an increasingly abundant source of novel antibiotics. Given that there is an increasing resistance to current drug therapies, finding new sources such as marine natural products is essential. Tunicate-associated marine bacteria can be a significant source of antibacterial compounds. Two tunicates of the species Eudistoma were collected from Portobelo National Park on the Salmedina Reef of Panama in the Caribbean Sea. Bacteria associated with the tunicate were isolated, cultured, extracted, and fractionated. Fractions were tested against an array of clinically relevant bacterial pathogens in the BioMAP assay. Two fractions MB0086E and MB0088E demonstrated activity …

Sceletium Tortuosum And Mesembrine: A Potential Alternative Treatment For Depression, Rebecca Schell 2014 Scripps College

Sceletium Tortuosum And Mesembrine: A Potential Alternative Treatment For Depression, Rebecca Schell

Scripps Senior Theses

Major depressive disorder affects people’s productivity and ability to function in everyday life. The disorder can be attributed to neurochemical imbalances of various neurotransmitters including but not limited to serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine. Conventional pharmacological treatments have focused primarily on these three neurotransmitters, and have been shown to be effective in alleviating most of the major symptoms of depression. Although these treatments are effective with most patients, they are known to have adverse side effects, causing patients to seek alternative treatments. Sceletium tortuosum, a succulent plant found in the Cape region of South Africa, has been shown to have …

Investigating Structure And Protein-Protein Interactions Of Key Post-Type Ii Pks Tailoring Enzymes, Theresa E. Downey 2014 University of Kentucky

Investigating Structure And Protein-Protein Interactions Of Key Post-Type Ii Pks Tailoring Enzymes, Theresa E. Downey

Theses and Dissertations--Pharmacy

Type II polyketide synthase (PKS) produced natural products have proven to be an excellent source of pharmacologically relevant molecules due to their rich biological activities and chemical scaffolds. Type II-PKS manufactured polyketides share similar polycyclic aromatic backbones leaving their diversity to stem from various chemical additions and alterations facilitated by post-PKS tailoring enzymes. Evidence suggests that post-PKS tailoring enzymes form complexes in order to facilitate the highly orchestrated process of biosynthesis. Thus, protein-protein interactions between these enzymes must play crucial roles in their structures and functions. Despite the importance of these interactions little has been done to study them. In …
