Effectiveness Of Residency Training Programs For Increasing Confidence And Competence Among New Graduate Nurse Practitioners, Heather Parkhill, Dnp, Msn, Fnp-C

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

Background: Nurse practitioners (NPs) are enrolling in post-graduate residency programs that provide training and mentorship during transition to practice.

Objective: This project explored whether participation in NP residency improved feelings of confidence, competence, preparedness to provide care and job satisfaction among new graduate NPs who completed a residency program compared to new graduate NPs who did not complete a residency program.

This project serves as a Capstone and final requirement for the Master of Public Health Degree at the University of Southern Maine Muskie School for Public Service. The project is a qualitative inquiry into the experience of new graduate nurse practitioners’ in their first year of practice, and their transition from the registered nurse (RN) into the nurse practitioner (NP) role. Flipping the classroom is a pedagogical model that employs easy to use, readily accessible technology based resources such as video lectures, reading handouts, and practice problems outside the classroom, whereas interactive group-based, problem-solving activities conducted in the classroom. This strategy permits for an extended range of learning activities during the session. Using class time for active learning provides greater opportunity for mentoring and peer to peer collaboration. The research presented on this poster explored the impact of extraprofessional education on undergraduate nursing and speech-language pathology students with an overall goal of improving the interprofessional relationship between the two fields. Utilizing quantitative and qualitative methods in the form of a pre-test, educational materials, live guided observation, and post-tests, the researchers found an increase in the nursing students ability to identify the role of the speech-language pathologist in a medical setting. There was also an increase in the speech-language pathology student’s ability to understand how and when to communicate with nurses in a medical setting.

Barriers to good oral health care pose a significant health threat to low-income individuals and families, which in extreme cases can result in fatal consequences. Lack of good oral health may also negatively impact social function and interaction, limiting verbal and nonverbal communication, and interfering with intimacy, nutrition, and sleep. Background: The growing prevalence of hypertension (HTN), diabetes mellitus (DM), and in Mexico highlights the need for preventative health care services. Rural communities worldwide lack access to such services. The purpose of this study was to describe the prevalence of HTN, DM, and dyslipidemia in student-run screening clinics in rural communities of the Sierra Norte of Puebla, Mexico to better understand the role the clinics play for the patients served.

This column describes a process for integrating information literacy (IL) and evidence-based medicine (EBM) content within a new school of medicine curriculum. The project was a collaborative effort among health sciences librarians, curriculum deans, directors, and faculty. The health sciences librarians became members of the curriculum committees, developed a successful proposal for IL and EBM content within the curriculum, and were invited to become course instructors for Analytics in Medicine.
