Nanotechnologies are predicted to revolutionize: (a) the control over materials properties at ultrafine scales; and (b) the sensitivity of tools and devices applied in various scientific and technological fields. In this short review, we argue that dentistry will be no exception to this trend. Here, we present a dynamic view of dental tissues, an adoption of which may lead to finer, more effective and minimally invasive reparation approaches. By doing so, we aim at providing insights into some of the breakthroughs relevant to understanding the genesis of dental tissues at the nanostructural level or generating dental materials with nanoscale critical …

Temporomandibular joint osteoarthritis (TMJ OA) is a degenerative joint disease, which ultimately results in severe pain, permanent cartilage destruction, and TMJ dysfunction. The extracellular matrix (ECM) micro-environment is critical for maintaining the TMJ mandibular condylar cartilage tissue integrity and is important for regulating chondrocyte activity. The small leucine-rich repeat proteoglycans (SLRPs) are a family of ECM proteins that are highly expressed in cartilage and bone. The goals of this study were to determine the role of two members of the SLRP family, biglycan (Bgn) and fibromodulin (Fmod), in the development of TMJ OA pathology and to identify the early cellular …

This review presents a discourse on challenges in understanding and imitating the process of amelogenesis in vitro on the molecular scale. In light of the analysis of imitation of the growth of dental enamel, it also impends on the prospects and potential drawbacks of the biomimetic approach in general. As the formation of enamel proceeds with the protein matrix guiding the crystal growth, while at the same time conducting its own degradation and removal, it is argued that three aspects of amelogenesis need to be induced in parallel: a) crystal growth; b) protein assembly; c) proteolytic degradation. Synthesis Of Urethane Acrylate Macromer From Palm Oil-Based Polyol And Its Application As A Resin For Dental Composite., Fadhel A. A. Alsanabani

A slightly branched urethane acrylate macromer (UAM) was synthesized by reacting palm oil-based polyol with excess amounts of polymeric methylene diphenyl diisocyanate (MDI) to form urethane prepolymer, then reacted with 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) and FT-IR spectroscopy confirmed the urethane and grafted acrylate groups. 0.2% by weight of camphoroquinone (CQ) and 0.8% by weight of ethyl-4-N,N-dimethylamino-benzoate (4EDMAB) by weight were added to render the experimental resins light-curable. Their viscosity, percentage of degree of conversion (%DC) and cross-linking density (CLD), percentage of volumetric polymerization shrinkage (%VPS), water sorption and solubility, flexural strength, modulus of elasticity and toughness were determined and compared to …

The purpose of this study is to determine and compare the prevalence of oral mucosal lesions (OML) and related risk habits and the influence of these habits on oral mucosal lesion prevalence among dental outpatients in Malaysia and Yemen during the period from May to October 2009. A total of 554 and 520 dental outpatients from Malaysia and Yemen with mean ages of 41.9± 17.04 years and 36.6±15.62 years respectively were interviewed and examined. About 700 species of bacteria can inhabit the human oral cavity. This project initially investigated the bacterial diversity within the oral cavity of Malaysian subjects by using culture-dependent techniques and 16S rDNA sequence analysis. The second part of the research profiled the antibiotic resistance of the identified oral bacteria by the Etest method. Three sampling sites of the oral cavity from nine healthy subjects were analyzed: the tooth surface, gingival crevice, and dorsum of the tongue. The tooth surface was shown to harbor 41 species, gingival crevice harbored 51 species and tongue dorsum 41 species. On average, each subject carried …
