Gingival abscess, also known as parulis, is defined as a localized, acute inflammatory lesion that may arise from a number of sources, including microbial plaque infection, trauma, and foreign body impaction. It often presents as a smooth, fluctuant, red-color swelling and can occasionally be painful. It is generally limited to marginal and interdental gingiva. Based on its location it has been classified as a type of periodontal abscess which does not involve any attachment loss. The treatment comprises of removal of the cause and, in acute situations, excision of the abscess. A typical gingival abscess is easy to diagnose; however, …

objective: This research was carried to evaluate which ball size mounted on bar splinting two implants supporting overdenture is more favorable regarding bone height and density. material &methods: Two implants(Tut Dental Implant System,ECDI Cairo, Egypt) splinted by bar (OT bar Multiuse attachments,Cas,RHEIN 83, ITALY) carrying two balls (OT Cap attachments, Cas, RHEIN 83 Italy) were inserted in n=10/gp. Patients were divided into two groups according to the size of the balls used which were either micro1.8mm or macro 2.5mm (control group). For all patients overdentures were constructed & conventional tomograms were taken. Crestal bone height & density around the implants …

Effect Of Bracket Width On The First-Order Toe-In Angle Of The Maxillary First Molar, Erin N. Brophey
MUSC Theses and Dissertations
Introduction: The first-order toe-in angle of the maxillary first molar is an important aspect of orthodontics and occlusion. Many variables contribute to the amount of distal offset expressed such as bracket slot dimensions, the amount of toe in angle built into the prescription of the bracket, bracket placement, bracket deformation, and tooth morphology. The purpose of this study is to mathematically predict the degree of first-order toe in angle loss with various archwire dimensions in various molar tube width preprogrammed brackets. Methods: Molar brackets from 3M Unitek, American Orthodontics™ (AO), Great American Orthodontics™ (GAC), Ormco™, Opal™, Rocky Mountain Orthodontics™ (RMO) …

objective: This study was conducted to evaluate the bone changes that may occur around Legacy I implants and NanoTite Tapered implants supporting mandibular overdentures utilizing cone beam computed tomography (CBCT). materials and methods: Fourteen completely edentulous male patients were randomly divided into two equal groups. Group I: Each patient received two Legacy I implants. Group II: Each patient received two NanoTite Tapered Implants. All implants were inserted bilaterally in the mandibular canine region. In the following respects, tooth enamel is a unique tissue in the mammalian body: (a) it is the most mineralized and hardest tissue in it comprising up to 95 wt% of apatite; (b) its microstructure is dominated by parallel rods composed of bundles of 40 – 60 nm wide apatite crystals with aspect ratios reaching up to 1:10,000 and (c) not only does the protein matrix that gives rise to enamel guides the crystal growth, but it also conducts its own degradation and removal in parallel. Hence, when mimicking the process of amelogenesis in vitro, crystal growth has to …

The Dentist / Patient Relationship: The Role Of Dental Anxiety, Michael Liu
CMC Senior Theses
Dental anxiety is a common problem found in approximately 80% of the adult population in the United States. This study examined the role of dental anxiety within the dentist/patient relationship. Negative experiences were found to be the most significant contributor of dental anxiety. The negative experiences result largely from the relationship between the dentist and the patient. Both dentist and patient are affected from the effects of dental anxiety. Therefore it is important for the dentist to establish a trusting relationship with the patient to ensure that proper dental care can be provided.

The NOHSS ranks Kentucky at or near the bottom in most oral health indicators. The primary message of the Surgeon General’s May 2000 report on Oral Health in America was to emphasize the link between oral health and overall health including the effect on day‐to‐day activities such as work and school …

The teeth are among the most distinctive and productive features of the human species. It is the longest lasting surface of the body and can be used in research studies many years after death. Yet, in the living individual, the integrity of the teeth is constantly assaulted by a microbial challenge so great that dental caries, or decay, ranks as one of the most widespread medical afflictions. According to studies, dental caries rank third in medical costs, behind only heart disease and cancer (Loesche 1996). This review will attempt to describe what is responsible for dental caries, namely a bacterium …

There is increasing pressure on recent dental school graduates to understand and successfully utilize patient management and business management strategies to run a productive dental office. Dental schools are faced with the dilemma to either add more credit hours in their already crowded curriculum or adjust predental school requirements. All fifty-nine U.S. dental schools were assessed online to determine admission requirements in the areas of behavioral science and business education. Results show that only 11.9 percent of the schools require prerequisite course work in behavioral science and no school requires prerequisite course work in business. However, 64.4 percent and 30.5 …
