C-Fos: A Neural Activity Marker For Craniofacial Pain Research, Weera Supronsinchai, Robin James Storer
Chulalongkorn University Dental Journal
It is well known that pain in animal models is difficult to measure. c-Fos, the protein product of the cellular immediate-early proto-oncogene gene, c-fos, can be activated in neuronal cells by noxious sensory stimuli including chemical irritation, mechanical, thermal, and electrical stimulation. The expression of c-Fos provides researchers with a tool by which the processing of somatosensory information, particularly nociception, from the craniofacial regions can be better understood. c-Fos is widely used as an indirect marker of neuronal activation after noxious stimulation in dental pain research, including in the trigeminal nervous system as activated by craniofacial or orofacial stimulation. Anatomical …

Chemokine Function In Periodontal Disease And Oral Cavity Cancer, Sinem Esra Sahingur, W. Andrew Yeudall
Periodontics Publications
The chemotactic cytokines, or chemokines, comprise a superfamily of polypeptides with a wide range of activities that include recruitment of immune cells to sites of infection and inflammation, as well as stimulation of cell proliferation. As such, they function as antimicrobial molecules and play a central role in host defenses against pathogen challenge. However, their ability to recruit leukocytes and potentiate or prolong the inflammatory response may have profound implications for the progression of oral diseases such as chronic periodontitis, where tissue destruction may be widespread. Moreover, it is increasingly recognized that chronic inflammation is a key component of tumor …

Compressive Stress Enhances Notch1 Mrna Expression In Human Deciduous Dental Pulp Cells In Vitro, Karnnapas Peetiakarawach, Thanaphum Osathanon, Prasit Pavasant, Panarat Rattanaworawipa, Waleerat Sukarawan
Chulalongkorn University Dental Journal
Objective The present study aimed to investigate the influence of mechanical stress on Notch signaling component expression by human deciduous dental pulp cells. Materials and Methods Cells were isolated from human deciduous teeth. The mechanical stress was applied to cell culture using a computerized cell compressive force loading apparatus. Cell viability was evaluated using MTT assay. The mRNA expression of selected Notch signaling components was determined using quantitative real-time PCR. Results A computerized cell compressive mechanical stress did not influence cell viability. After mechanical stress treatment for 2 h, the NOTCH1, JAG1, and HEY1 mRNA levels were upregulated. However, the …

Soft Tissue Profile Changes Following Treatment Of Class Ii Division 1 Malocclusion With Different Orthodontic Modalities, Suhatcha Maetevorakul, Smorntree Viteporn
Chulalongkorn University Dental Journal
Objective To compare the soft tissue profile changes of Class II Division 1 patients who were treated by different orthodontic modalities. Materials and Methods The subjects comprised 104 Thai growing patients who presented Class II Division 1 malocclusion and were treated by different orthodontic modalities. Group I: 30 patients were treated with cervical headgear. Group II: 30 patients were treated with Class II traction. Group III: 44 patients were treated as an extraction of the four first premolars. The profile changes were scrutinized from lateral cephalograms before and after treatments by means of the X-Y coordinate system. Significant differences of …

Comparison Of Residual Monomer In The Mma-Based Orthodontic Base-Plate Materials Before And After Water Immersion, Pajima Thaitammayanon, Chintana Sirichompun, Chairat Wiwatwarrapan
Chulalongkorn University Dental Journal
Objective To compare the residual monomer in two brands of MMA-based orthodontic base-plate materials before and after water immersion (for 24 and 72 hours). Materials and Methods A total of 36 disc specimens (3 x 50 mm) were prepared from MMA-based orthodontic base-plate materials; Orthocryl (Dentaurum) and Orthoplast (Vertex) according to the manufacturersû instructions and ISO 20795-2 (2013). The specimens from each brand were divided into three groups (six specimens per group). Group I was those before water immersion and served as controls. Groups II and III were those after water immersion for 24 and 72 hours, respectively. The level …

Chulalongkorn University Dental Journal
Objective The interface between denture base and hard reline resin can be improved with chemical surface treatment, methyl formate-methyl acetate (MF-MA) solution, by dissolving the relined surface. This study evaluated the effect of various MF-MA wetting times on the tensile bond strength between a non-methyl methacrylate (MMA) based reline material and denture base. Materials and Methods One hundred plates of heat-cured denture base resin (Meliodent®) were prepared according to ISO 10139-2 and randomly divided into five groups: control and four experimental groups treated with CU Acrylic Bond, MF-MA at a ratio of 25:75 by volume, for 15, 30, 60, and 180 …

Objectives To compare the recognition threshold of the four taste qualities in patients wearing upper removable orthodontic appliances with posterior bite planes before and after insertion. Material and Methods Subjects who received upper removable orthodontic appliances with posterior bite planes were recruited in the study. Recognition threshold for salty, sweet, bitter and sour was measured using a Modified Harris-Kalmus test. The tests were conducted on three different occasions; T0-one month before appliance insertion; T1-on the day of appliance insertion; T2-one month after appliance insertion. The retest was additionally performed on T1, prior to appliance insertion. Friedman test was used to …
