Ectodermal dysplasia (ED) represents a disorder group characterised by abnormal development of the ectodermal derivatives. Removable partial dentures (RPD), complete dentures (CD) or overdentures (OD) are most often the treatment of choice for young affected patients. Prosthetic intervention is of utmost importance in the management of ED patients, as it resolves problems associated with functional, aesthetic, and psychological issues, and improves a patient’s quality of life. However, few studies present the principles and guidelines that can assist in the decision-making process of the most appropriate removable prosthesis. The purpose of this study was to suggest a simple treatment decision-making algorithm …

A microfluidics approach to synthesize core–shell nanocarriers with high pH tunability is described. The sacrificial shell protects the core layer with the drugs and prevents their release in the severe pH conditions of the gastrointestinal tract, while allowing for drug release in the proximity of a tumor. The proposed nanoparticulate drug-delivery system is designed for the oral administration of cancer therapeutics.

Current methods in handling maxillofacial defects are not robust and are highly dependent on the surgeon’s skills and the inherent potential in the patients’ bodies for regenerating lost tissues. Employing custom-designed 3D printed scaffolds that securely and effectively reconstruct the defects by using tissue engineering and regenerative medicine techniques can revolutionize preprosthetic surgeries. Various polymers, ceramics, natural and synthetic bioplastics, proteins, biomolecules, living cells, and growth factors as well as their hybrid structures can be used in 3D printing of scaffolds, which are still under development by scientists. These scaffolds not only are beneficial due to their patient-specific design, but …

A Simplified Technique For Implant-Abutment Level Impression After Soft Tissue Adaptation Around Provisional Restoration, Ahmad Kutkut, Osama Abu-Hammad, Robert Q. Frazer 2016 University of Kentucky

A Simplified Technique For Implant-Abutment Level Impression After Soft Tissue Adaptation Around Provisional Restoration, Ahmad Kutkut, Osama Abu-Hammad, Robert Q. Frazer

Oral Health Practice Faculty Publications

Impression techniques for implant restorations can be implant level or abutment level impressions with open tray or closed tray techniques. Conventional implant-abutment level impression techniques are predictable for maximizing esthetic outcomes. Restoration of the implant traditionally requires the use of the metal or plastic impression copings, analogs, and laboratory components. Simplifying the dental implant restoration by reducing armamentarium through incorporating conventional techniques used daily for crowns and bridges will allow more general dentists to restore implants in their practices. The demonstrated technique is useful when modifications to implant abutments are required to correct the angulation of malpositioned implants. This technique …

Pneumatization Of The Sphenoid Sinus On A Panoramic Radiograph, Pipop Sutthiprapaporn, Pornpop Rattana-arpha 2016 Chulalongkorn University

Pneumatization Of The Sphenoid Sinus On A Panoramic Radiograph, Pipop Sutthiprapaporn, Pornpop Rattana-Arpha

Chulalongkorn University Dental Journal

The paranasal sinuses are composed of a set of structures of the maxillofacial region and its proximity to the oral cavity. The sphenoid sinus is located within the body of the sphenoid bone. However, an excessive pneumatization of this structure may cause difficulties in radiographic diagnosis, particularly with panoramic radiographs. This article describes a case of pneumatization of the sphenoid sinus in the pterygoid process and greater wing of the sphenoid bone, presented on a panoramic radiograph. Cone beam computed tomography in axial and coronal sections was performed to confirm the pneumatization of these structures.

Filifactor Alocis, A Newly Appreciated Oral Pathogen, Fails To Induce The Respiratory Burst Response Of Human Neutrophils., Jacob S. Edmisson

College of Arts & Sciences Senior Theses

Almost 50% of adult Americans suffer from periodontitis which is a bacterially induced inflammation of the tissue that surround and support the tooth. The accumulation of neutrophils, a critical cell component of the innate immune system, in the gingival crevice contributes to tissue damage. Filifactor alocis is a newly appreciated pathogen present in oral biofilms at periodontal disease sites. Studying the interactions between neutrophils and F. alocis will provide valuable information for delineating the role of this bacterium in periodontal disease and enhance our understanding of bacterial strategies to evade leukocytes’ antimicrobial mechanisms. The hypothesis that F. alocis modulates human …
