Background Prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) is the main mediator for receptor activator of nuclear factor-κB ligand (RANKL)-mediated osteoclastogenesis and bone resorption in periodontitis. Bone marrow stromal cells (BMSCs) secrete PGE2 in response to pro-inflammatory cytokines, such as tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α). Curcumin, a polyphenolic compound from the turmeric plant, possesses an anti-inflammatory effect by downregulating key mediators of inflammation. Objectives This study examined the effect of curcumin on the process of PGE2 biosynthesis in TNF-α-stimulated BMSCs. Objectives The aim of this study is to evaluate the technical image quality and radiation dose of the DentiiScan 2.0 cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) scanner before widespread clinical use. Materials and methods Image quality was measured for 4 scanning protocols of the DentiiScan 2.0, using 2 dedicated test objects: the SEDENTEXCT IQ phantom and the QRM-ConeBeam phantom. Objectives: The objective of this in vitro study is to compare the resistance to sliding (RS) of coated and uncoated orthodontic archwires in ceramic brackets at various water-immersion times and bracket angulations. Background: Tooth-colored orthodontic systems have been developed to meet the patient’s esthetic needs. Ceramic brackets and polymer-coated archwires have been shown to demonstrate higher RS than metal brackets and archwires in dry conditions. Objective The goal of this study is to establish normative tooth crown size (mesio-distal width) data for the Chickasaw Nation and demonstrate how it relates to Caucasian standards. Background: Tooth size ratios represent a diagnostic tool that allow for a prediction of treatment outcomes. A proper relationship of the total mesio-distal width of the maxillary dentition to the mesio- distal width of the mandibular dentition will favor an ideal post treatment occlusion. Objectives: To compare estimated prevalence of past-year dental visit (PPYDV) among US adults aged ≥18 years from the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) to estimates from the Medical Expenditure Panel Survey (MEPS), National Health Interview Survey (NHIS), and National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES).

Methods: We estimated PPYDV adjusted for covariates (age, race/ethnicity, education level, poverty status, edentulism) using BRFSS, MEPS, and NHIS 1999-2010, and NHANES 1999-2004. The Medicaid program exists to assist these families’ access to medical and dental care, including orthodontics in children and adolescents with severe malocclusions. There exists a contrast between need and care-received, which is a product of several general factors. This study will examine the factors involved with orthodontist participation. Objective: We examined the association between utilization of care for a dental problem (utilization-DP) and parent-reported dental problem (DP) urgency among children with DP by type of health care insurance coverage.

Methods: We used weighted 2008 National Health Interview Survey data from 2,834 children, aged 2-17 years with at least one DP within the 6 months preceding survey. Explanatory variables were selected based on Andersen's model of healthcare utilization. Need was considered urgent if DP included toothache, bleeding gums, broken or missing teeth, broken or missing filling, or decayed teeth and otherwise as non-urgent. Context

A recently updated Community Guide systematic review of the effectiveness of school sealant programs (SSPs) still found strong evidence that SSPs reduced dental caries among schoolchildren. This follow-up systematic review updates SSP cost and benefit information from the original 2002 review.

Evidence acquisition

Using Community Guide economic review methods, the authors searched the literature from January 2000 to November 20, 2014. The final body of evidence included 14 studies—ten from the current search and four with cost information from the 2002 review. However, oral health knowledge (in general) and knowledge about hyposalivation (in particular) are often lacking in nondental healthcare professional’s curricula. Additionally, hyposalivation has not been adequately studied in young adults. The purpose for this study is twofold: to use an interprofessional educational curriculum to increase nondental healthcare students’ knowledge about oral health and salivary testing and determine whether hyposalivation is different between sexes in young adults.
