All ETDs from UAB
Orthognathic surgery has 3 basic goals: function, esthetics and stability. The relationship between orthognathic surgery and temporomandibular joint function remains highly controversial. Regarding the functional changes and range of mandibular movements after surgery, mandibular hypomobility and other signs and symptoms of joint dysfunction are associated with orthognathic surgery in the literature. The aim of this study is to evaluate the function of the temporomandibular joints at lest 6 months after orthognathic surgery and compare them with non-surgical subjects. The null hypothesis is that there is no difference in subjective symptoms reported by the subjects and clinical evaluation of the range …

Assessment Of Fracture Resistance Of Maxillary First Molars After Root Canal Preparation Using Three Different Rotary Instruments (V-Taper, Protaper, Vortex Blue): Finite Element Analysis, Mehran Malakpour
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Introduction: Long term success of endodontically treated teeth has been one of the most challenging aspects of the field of endodontics due to reduced fracture resistance of these teeth. Recently, researchers have heightened focus on conservative endodontics in order to sustain the tooth integrity, and reduce factors impacting the fracture resistance of endodontically treated teeth. As a result, rotary instrument manufacturers have developed files that have a minimal effect on original root canal anatomy. This study used Finite Element Analysis to investigate the dental biomechanical effect of rotary instrumentation during root canal therapy. The aim of this study is to …
Impact On The Pharyngeal Airway Space After Maxillomandibular Advancement Procedure For Obstructive Sleep Apnea Patients, Ghaddy Alsaty
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Background and Objectives: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a sleep-related breathing disorder, characterized by disrupted snoring and repetitive upper airway obstructions. Continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) is considered the therapeutic mainstay for OSA patients. However, CPAP therapy has compliance limitations. An alternative treatment options is maxillomandibular advancement (MMA) surgical procedure. Genial tubercle advancement (GTA) is often performed concomitant with MMA for esthetic purposes. Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) provides the ability to visualize the upper airway and perform three-dimensional (3D) reconstructions. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the impact of MMA procedure with or without GTA on oropharyngeal …

The oral microbiome may be affected by patient medications, disease conditions and systemic disorders. Selenomonas noxia is an anaerobic, motile, non spore-forming, gram-negative rod that has been repeatedly associated with periodontal disease and other disorders, including obesity. Based upon the paucity of evidence regarding oral prevalence, the objective of was to evaluate S. noxia prevalence by sampling saliva from the oral cavity to screen for this pathogen. Using an existing saliva repository, DNA was isolated and screened using quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qPCR). Demographic analysis of study samples and qPCR results was also performed. Approximately half of the samples …

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Cone beam computerized tomography (CBCT) has been wildly used in many fields of dentistry, especially to investigate the vertical root fracture (VRF). CBCT systems were consisted of various field of view (FOV). As for high cost and large machine size, newly designed of CBCT systems started to develop by combining digital panoramic radiographs with a relatively small-to-medium FOV CBCT system. These new model of CBCT systems was called hybrid CBCT. The aims of this study is to compare the difference in detection of VRF by a hybrid CBCT and a CBCT. For this, forty permanent mandibular premolar teeth were endodontically …

Put Your Money Where Your Mouth Is: Reforming Organized Dentistry To Address Persistent Oral Health Disparities In The U.S., Aparna Chintapalli
Pomona Senior Theses
The importance of oral health has been largely neglected from the conventional standards of healthcare in terms of public understanding & prioritization, the industrial infrastructure, and the scope of prevention & early-intervention services. Its adjunctive locus to the field of medicine has lead to the bifurcation of the oral cavity from the rest of the human body. As a result of this divide, there have been multiple factors that have allowed socially stratified oral health outcomes to manifest. This thesis examines the determinants of oral health disparities through a multidisciplinary lens (i.e. biology, public policy, infrastructure), and offers evidence of …

Transposition is rare and occurred commonly on maxillary canine and premolar. To extract or not to extract, to correct or not to correct the dental transposition teeth, it’s a tough decision. A 12-year-old boy was referred for orthodontic correction because of bad alignment at upper dentition. His dental age was in late mixed dentition. Both upper deciduous canines were still retained. Left canine was buccally blocked-out, and first premolar was in palatal crossbite with the lower premolars. Panoramic film showed impacted upper right canine and transposed left canine and first premolar. The treatment duration took 3.5 years. The upper left …
