Investigation Of Inflammatory Responses Following The Use Of Novel Anisotropic Hydrogel Tissue Expander In The Skin Of Maxillofacial Region, Salim Igdayir Kholoud Mohamed Ali

Student Works (2020-2029)

Background: The purpose of tissue expander is to grow healthy supplementary tissue under the controlled of mechanical force exerted by the tissue expander. In the field of reconstructive and plastic surgery, the use of soft tissue expanders are important for growing healthy supplementary tissue. However, the molecular mechanism associated with the inflammatory response associated with the force generated from the use of tissue expanders is still not characterized. Among the many types of tissue expanders, anisotropic type of hydrogel tissue expander was chosen due to its ability to produce controlled incremental inflation on the tissue that enhance cellular adaptation and …

Polymicrobial Interactions Between Selected Microbes Of Oral Biofilm And Differential Expression Of Als Genes And Their Related Proteins, Fahim Ayesha 2020 Universiti Malaya

Polymicrobial Interactions Between Selected Microbes Of Oral Biofilm And Differential Expression Of Als Genes And Their Related Proteins, Fahim Ayesha

Student Works (2020-2029)

More than 700 different types of microorganisms dwell in human oral mucosal surfaces. The interactions between these microorganisms contribute to formation of polymicrobial communities on hard and soft tissues as well as on dentures and implants. Candida albicans, a pleomorphic fungus inhabiting oral and gastrointestinal (GIT) mucosa becomes pathogenic in favourable conditions causing local or systemic disease. Since streptococci are early colonisers, the ability of Candida albicans to adhere to streptococci paves the way for an additional surface for candidal colonization and propagation. This study was aimed to investigate polymicrobial interactions between C. albicans, S. sanguinis and S. mitis on …

Potential Of Human Deciduous Periodontal Ligament Stem Cells For Use In Hepatic Lineage And Their Exosome Application On Hepatic Injuries, R. Vasanthan Punitha 2020 Universiti Malaya

Potential Of Human Deciduous Periodontal Ligament Stem Cells For Use In Hepatic Lineage And Their Exosome Application On Hepatic Injuries, R. Vasanthan Punitha

Student Works (2020-2029)

Introduction: Human deciduous periodontal ligament stem cells represent as another source of stem cells from the dental origin. These cells were shown to have multi-potential attributes and also self renewing ability. These easily accessible stem cells candidate could also resolve issues concerning ethical and compatability for the use in regenerative purposes. However, their efficiency towards hepatic lineage differentiation has not been addressed so far. Meanwhile, the main contributor for regenerative properties were supposedly mediated by soluble factors and extracellular vesicles such as exosomes secreted by cells. Objectives: The aims of this study are to isolate, characterize and also to investigate …

Acculturative Stress, Social Support And Oral Health Related Quality Of Life Among International Graduate Students In Malaysian Public Universities, Ben Ghasheer Hala Fathalla

Student Works (2020-2029)

Background: Oral health related quality of life (OHRQoL) reflects the impact of the oral condition on physical, social, and psychological functioning and well-being from an individual’s perspective. It is an important health outcome that is influenced by several factors which together are known as the determinants of health. Psychosocial factors are among many other factors that have a crucial role in shaping oral health. Understanding their role in relation to diminished oral health has gained more interest in recent years since such factors could serve as points of intervention for new oral health promotion strategies. Aim: This study aimed to …

Student Works (2020-2029)

Background: The preschool oral healthcare programme (POHP) was introduced by the Ministry of Health in 1984 to provide oral healthcare to 5-6-year-old children in Malaysia. Due to some limitations, a new programme called the ‘Senyuman Indah Milik Semua’ Programme (SIMSP) was introduced with the aim to improvise the POHP. In the SIMSP, a triad of dental therapists (DTs), teachers, and parents was set up to promote children’s oral hygiene level, oral health behaviours (OHBs), and parents’ oral health literacy (OHL). The POHP only involved DTs. Objectives: The primary objective of the study was to assess the effect of SIMSP versus …

Functional Significance Of Senescence And Autophagy In Cancer-Associated Fibroblasts From Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma, May Leng Tan 2020 Universiti Malaya

Functional Significance Of Senescence And Autophagy In Cancer-Associated Fibroblasts From Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma, May Leng Tan

Student Works (2020-2029)

Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) is a malignancy that arises from the epithelial cells within the oral cavity. It accounts for approximately 355,000 new cases worldwide and is exceptionally prevalent in particular geographical areas such as Papua New Guinea, the Indian subcontinent and South-East Asian countries. Despite advances in surgical management and therapeutic approaches, the five-year survival rate of OSCC patients has not improved significantly over the past few decades. The mortality associated with OSCC is particularly high often due to late presentation, locoregional recurrence, distant metastases and the development of second primary tumours. A comprehensive understanding of the molecular …
