Utility Of Point Of Care Ultrasound For Identifying Dental Abscesses In Emergency Department Patients Presenting With Dental Pain, Matthew Cervantes, Kelly Goodsell, MD, Arthur Au, MD 2020 Thomas Jefferson University

Utility Of Point Of Care Ultrasound For Identifying Dental Abscesses In Emergency Department Patients Presenting With Dental Pain, Matthew Cervantes, Kelly Goodsell, Md, Arthur Au, Md

Phase 1

Introduction: Computed tomography (CT) is the current gold standard for diagnosing dental abscesses in the Emergency Department (ED). There are limitations to using CT, including high cost, radiation exposure, and lengthy time to diagnosis. Point of Care Ultrasound (POCUS) is an alternative imaging modality that does not have these limitations, and is already used to diagnose other soft tissue abscesses. The efficacy of POCUS for diagnosing suspected dental abscesses has never been investigated. The purpose of this project is to compare the utility of POCUS to CT in diagnosing suspected dental abscesses in the ED.

Methods: A convenience …

© 2020 Chung et al. We previously reported that tumor inflammasomes play a key role in tumor control and act as favorable prognostic markers in nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC). Activated inflammasomes frequently form distinguishable specks and govern the cellular secretion of IL-1β. However, we know little about the biological and biochemical differences between cells with and without apoptosis-associated speck-like protein containing a caspase-recruitment domain (ASC) speck formation. In this study, we used proteomic iTRAQ analysis to analyze the proteomes of NPC cells that differ in their ASC speck formation upon cisplatin treatment. We identified proteins that were differentially over-expressed in cells …

Chlamydia trachomatis is the most common bacterial sexually-transmitted infection and the major cause of preventable blindness worldwide. The asymptomatic nature of many infections along with uncontrolled inflammation leads to irreversible damage in the upper genital tract and the tarsal conjunctivae, with the major complications of infertility and chronic pelvic pain, and blindness, respectively. Inflammation must, therefore, be tightly regulated to …

Sleep plays an important role in maintaining neuronal circuitry, signalling and helps maintain overall health and wellbeing. Sleep deprivation (SD) disturbs the circadian physiology and exerts a negative impact on brain and behavioural functions. SD impairs the cellular clearance of misfolded neurotoxin proteins like α-synuclein, amyloid-β, and tau which are involved in major neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease. In addition, SD is also shown to affect the glymphatic system, a glial-dependent metabolic waste clearance pathway, causing accumulation of misfolded faulty proteins in synaptic compartments resulting in cognitive decline. Also, SD affects the immunological and redox system resulting …

Conventional cigarette smoke harms nearly every organ of the body and is the leading cause of death in the United States and in the world. Decades of research have associated conventional cigarette smoke with several diseases and death. Heavily marketed, electronic nicotine delivery systems such as electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) are available in a variety of flavors and high nicotine concentrations. In 2019, a severe lung disease outbreak linked to e-cigarette use led to several deaths, which was called electronic-cigarette or vaping product use-associated lung injury (EVALI). Even though the trend of e-cigarette use among teens continues to increase, information on …

Comparison Of Calcium Hydroxide Extrusion With Syringe Vs Spiral Filler Delivery: A Pilot Study, Gordon San Lai 2020 University of the Pacific

Comparison Of Calcium Hydroxide Extrusion With Syringe Vs Spiral Filler Delivery: A Pilot Study, Gordon San Lai

Orthodontics and Endodontics Theses

Introduction: The aim of this study was to evaluate the frequency and amount of Ca(OH)2 extrusion in relation to the intracanal delivery technique, apical foramen size, and depth of placement. Methods: Standardized training blocks with j-shaped canals were used (n=64); half of the simulated canals were shaped to apical size #35(.06 taper) and the remaining 32 to #45(.06). The frequency and extent of Ca(OH)2 extrusion were measured relative to apical taper, the depth of insertion, and whether syringe or spiral filler was used. Blocks were immersed in pH-sensitive gel and observed for color change. The visible extent of extrusion, indicated …

Journal Articles: College of Dentistry

In order to access articles published in conventional (non-open access) journals, scientists must utilize tools such as subscriptions, site licenses or pay-per-view charges. In contrast, open access articles can be accessed without financial, legal or technical barriers. A large-scale study estimated that at least 28% of the academic literature is open access (19 million in total) and that this percentage is growing.[1] A recent survey showed an open access rate in field of dentistry at 45.8%.[2] It has been demonstrated that open access articles had 8% to 40% higher citations compared to non-open access articles; this has been …

Effect Of Different Surface Treatments On The Shear Bond Strength Between Lithium Disilicate Glass-Ceramic And Resin Cement, Siripan Simasetha

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

Objective: The study aimed to evaluate the shear bond strength (SBS) of lithium disilicate glass-ceramic and resin cement using different surface treatments. Methods: Lithium disilicate blocks (Vintage LD Press ®) were prepared, etched with 4.5 % hydrofluoric acid, and randomly divided into seven groups (n=10), depending on the surface treatments: 1) no surface treatment (control), 2) Silane Primer (KS), 3) Signum® Ceramic Bond I (SGI), 4) Signum® Ceramic Bond II (SGI/SGII), 5) experimental silane (EXP), 6) experimental-silane/Signum® Ceramic Bond II (EXP/SGII), and 7) Experimental/Adper™ Scotchbond Multi-purpose Adhesive (EXP/ADP). The specimens were cemented to resin composite blocks with resin cement and …
