Primary dental care is a patient-centered service consisting of routine dental checkups. The oral cavity is the first point of entrance to the body for many harmful pathogens. Therefore, primary dental care is essential to not only prevent and treat conditions in the mouth, but to also reduce the number of systemic diseases in the rest of the body. However, people with higher incomes or wealth have increased access to primary dental care. Purpose:

This study evaluated the oral health literacy OHL of school staff in Southern Minnesota. OHL is the degree to which individuals can understand health information. Dental caries is the most common chronic disease in school aged children, and school staff members spend a large portion of the day with children. Therefore, it is important for all school staff members to have a moderate or higher OHL status.

Methods:

The survey used a convenience sample of school staff in 3 different schools in southern Minnesota and used the REALD-30 OHL instrument with slight modification, to simplify data collection.

Objective: This study focused on documenting characteristics of the gingival transcriptome during various stages of periodontitis targeting genes associated with apoptotic and autophagic pathways and changes that specifically associate with features of the oral microbiome. Methods: Macaca mulatta (n = 18; 12-23 years) were examined at baseline and 0.5, 1, and 3 months of disease progression, as well as 5 months with clinical disease resolution. 16S sequencing and microarray analyses examined changes in the microbiome and gingival transcriptome, respectively, at each time point from every animal. Nanorobots, also known as “nanites” or “nanomachines,” are theoretical microscopic devices that may be used for the diagnosis and treatment of oral health problems. A survey was created to include dental hygiene educators responsible for oral chemotherapeutic curriculum within dental hygiene programs. Participants were asked which oral chemotherapeutic agents they included within their curriculum, their knowledge regarding several oral chemotherapeutic agents and evidence based/ non evidence based oral chemotherapeutic agents. The survey was sent to 375 dental hygiene directors and 77 (20.5%) participated in the survey study. Aim To compare efficacy of an anhydrous 0.454% w/w stannous fluoride/sodium fluoride toothpaste (Test) versus a sodium monofluorophosphate toothpaste (Negative control) and a stannous chloride/sodium fluoride toothpaste (Positive control) for dentine hypersensitivity relief after 8 weeks’ twice-daily use. Materials and Methods In this randomized, examiner-blind, stratified, parallel study, primary and secondary efficacy variables were mean changes in Schiff score (evaporative [air] sensitivity) and tactile threshold (Yeaple probe), respectively, from baseline to Week 8 between Test (n = 62) and Negative control (n = 62). This thesis examines the effectiveness of an active learning approach in improving oral health literacy and attitude about science among at-risk students in the age range of third to sixth grades. This is done by designing and implementing a novel Oral Health Outreach module and video. Active learning components include engaging PowerPoint, oral hygiene discussion and demonstration, and finally a biofilm simulation, which utilizes glow-in-the-dark paint, dentoform models, and black lights that allow students to visualize the importance of plaque removal.
