Kinematic And Spatiotemporal Analysis Between Sprint Drills And Maximal Sprinting, Julianne Cappadona 2013 Sacred Heart University

Kinematic And Spatiotemporal Analysis Between Sprint Drills And Maximal Sprinting, Julianne Cappadona

PTHMS Undergraduate Publications

Purpose: To determine if any kinematic differences exist between two common sprint drills (A- and B-drills) and maximal sprinting. Methods: 12 collegiate sprinters (19.17±1.11 y/o) granted informed consent were filmed performing two 40-meter sprints, A-skips, and B-skips. Three-dimensional motion analysis tracked the coordinates of 24 reflective markers and resulting joint kinematics were computed. Results: Statistical analysis revealed that sprinting yielded a significantly lower maximum hip flexion (p=0.015) but a significantly higher minimum ankle angular velocity (p=0.012) and step rate (p=0.000) value than A-drills. When compared to B-drills, sprinting values were significantly lower in maximum hip flexion (p=0.047), minimum knee flexion …

Comparison Of Hemodynamic Response To Tracheal Intubation With Macintosh And Mccoy Laryngoscopes, Mehtab A. Haidry, Fauzia A. Khan 2013 Aga Khan University

Comparison Of Hemodynamic Response To Tracheal Intubation With Macintosh And Mccoy Laryngoscopes, Mehtab A. Haidry, Fauzia A. Khan

Department of Anaesthesia

Background: Use of McCoy blade laryngoscope avoids the lifting force in the vallecula and theoretically should lead to a lower hemodynamic response related to laryngoscopy and tracheal intubation. The available literature on the topic is conflicting.MATERIALS AND Methods: We studied the hemodynamic response to laryngoscopy and tracheal intubation in 60 ASA 1 AND 2 adult patients using either Macintosh or McCoy laryngoscopes. The change in systolic, diastolic, mean arterial pressure, and heart rate (HR) was observed for 10 min post intubation. Arrhythmias and ST changes were also observed. Results: The maximum change in HR was 18.7% in the Macintosh and 7.7% …

An Informational Algorithm As The Basis For Perception-Action Control Of The Instantaneous Axes Of The Knee, Wangdo Kim, Margarida M. Espanha, António P. Veloso, Duarte Araújo, Filipa João, Luis Carrão, Sean S. Kohles 2013 Portland State University

An Informational Algorithm As The Basis For Perception-Action Control Of The Instantaneous Axes Of The Knee, Wangdo Kim, Margarida M. Espanha, António P. Veloso, Duarte Araújo, Filipa João, Luis Carrão, Sean S. Kohles

Mechanical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

Traditional locomotion studies emphasize an optimization of the desired movement trajectories while ignoring sensory feedback. We propose an information based theory that locomotion is neither triggered nor commanded but controlled. The basis for this control is the information derived from perceiving oneself in the world. Control therefore lies in the human-environment system. In order to test this hypothesis, we derived a mathematical foundation characterizing the energy that is required to perform a rotational twist, with small amplitude, of the instantaneous axes of the knee (IAK). We have found that the joint’s perception of the ground reaction force may be replaced …

Just Beautiful Portrays Of The Mind? The Relevance Of Aesthetic Strategies On Knowledge Creation In Neuroscience, Valerie Kummer 2013 Centre for Image Science, Danube-University, Danube, Austria

Just Beautiful Portrays Of The Mind? The Relevance Of Aesthetic Strategies On Knowledge Creation In Neuroscience, Valerie Kummer

The STEAM Journal

We live in the age of big data. All types of data are being generated at an increasing rate but theories about the strategies and methods to visualize them is lagging. One of the main challenges we face today in research is to keep up with the massive amounts of data we produce (Allen, Elena A. et.al, 2012). Especially in the field of neuroscience and its use of imaging technologies, the vast array of data has risen to such a high number that it is impossible to grasp the inherent information without additional software tools and intelligent interfaces. Only through …

Feasibility Of Tomotherapy-Based Image-Guided Radiotherapy To Reduce Aspiration Risk In Patients With Non-Laryngeal And Non-Pharyngeal Head And Neck Cancer, Nam P. Nguyen, Lexie Smith-Raymond, Vincent Vinh-Hung, Paul Vos, Rick Davis, Anand Desai, Thomas Sroka 2013 University of Arizona

Feasibility Of Tomotherapy-Based Image-Guided Radiotherapy To Reduce Aspiration Risk In Patients With Non-Laryngeal And Non-Pharyngeal Head And Neck Cancer, Nam P. Nguyen, Lexie Smith-Raymond, Vincent Vinh-Hung, Paul Vos, Rick Davis, Anand Desai, Thomas Sroka

Dartmouth Scholarship

Purpose: The study aims to assess the feasibility of Tomotherapy-based image-guided radiotherapy (IGRT) to reduce the aspiration risk in patients with non-laryngeal and non-hypopharyngeal cancer. A retrospective review of 48 patients undergoing radiation for non-laryngeal and non-hypopharyngeal head and neck cancers was conducted. All patients had a modified barium swallow (MBS) prior to treatment, which was repeated one month following radiotherapy. Mean middle and inferior pharyngeal dose was recorded and correlated with the MBS results to determine aspiration risk.

Ropivacaine Decreases Tissue Oxygen Saturation Following Peripheral Nerve Block In Children, Nina Deutsch, Mamta Singh, Sophie R. Pestieau, Sean P. Alexander, Domiciano Santos, Richard J. Levy 2013 George Washington University

Ropivacaine Decreases Tissue Oxygen Saturation Following Peripheral Nerve Block In Children, Nina Deutsch, Mamta Singh, Sophie R. Pestieau, Sean P. Alexander, Domiciano Santos, Richard J. Levy

Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine Faculty Publications

Background: Local anesthetics can cause vasoconstriction and disrupt neuronal impulses, reducing regional blood flow and increasing tissue oxygen consumption. This could alter regional oxygen supply and demand. Because microcirculation modifies during development and oxygen consumption kinetics differ between children and adults, we aimed to assess effects of ropivacaine Peripheral Nerve Block (PNB) on regional tissue saturation in children and young adults using Near-Infrared Spectroscopy (NIRS).

Methods: Following Institutional Review Board approval and informed consent, 20 patients undergoing PNB for various orthopedic surgeries were studied. NIRS sensors were placed on the operative limb, contralateral limb, and forehead. Tissue saturations (rSO2) were …

Tracking Knee Joint Functional Axes Through Tikhonov Filtering And Plűcker Coordinates, Wangdo Kim, Yoon-Hyuk Kim, António P. Veloso, Sean S. Kohles 2013 Universidade Técnica de Lisboa

Tracking Knee Joint Functional Axes Through Tikhonov Filtering And Plűcker Coordinates, Wangdo Kim, Yoon-Hyuk Kim, António P. Veloso, Sean S. Kohles

Mechanical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

Researchers have reported several compensation methods to estimate bone and joint position from a cluster of skin-mounted markers as influenced by Soft Tissue Artifacts (STA). Tikhonov Regularization Filtering (TRF) as a means to estimate Instantaneous Screw Axes (ISA) was introduced here as a means to reduce the displacement of a rigid body to its simplest geometric form. Recent studies have suggested that the ISA of the knee, i.e., Knee Functional Axes (KFA), might be closely connected to the estimation of constraint forces such as those due to medial and lateral connective tissues. The estimations of ISAs were known to be …

Video Codec Performance (Excel Spreadsheet), George Mcnamara

George McNamara

Video codec performance (Excel spreadsheet). Movie was made in 2005-2006 when I worked at City of Hope National Medical Center. VTLF refers to Video Timelapse Light Facility. Videos were outputted from MetaMorph as AVI files. Personally, I always recommend uncompressed video files fro scientific uses. I also encourage posting the original scientific data format (ex. .lsm, .zvi, .lif, .stk).

Tattletales is my concept for spatial multiplexing many fluorescent protein (FP) biosensors in the same live cell. For example, there are excellent FP biosensors to Ca++ ions, pH, glucose, ribose, glutamine, glutamate, ATP, redox, ROS, pyruvate, cAMP, cGMP, IP3, PI(3,4,5)P3, cell cycle indicators (Fucci2), PKA, PKC, photsphatases, caspase(s) [1, 2]. However, these are typically used one biosensor per experiment, due in part to flooding …
