Soil Composition Of Community Gardens: Are There Quality Concerns?, Shahla Wunderlich, Charles Feldman, K. Latif, P. Punamiya

Department of Nutrition and Food Studies Scholarship and Creative Works

It is suggested, but not confirmed, that soil composition and minerals in soil can affect the nutritional quality of the produce. Determining soil composition of community gardens has therefore become significant for foods that are grown in these gardens as the popularity of community gardens are on the rise. A comparative study of five (5) community garden soils from different regions of New Jersey and New York over a period of 4 months was conducted. A total of nine (9) elements including Al, Cr, Fe, Ni, Cu, Zn, As, Cd, and Pb were analysed using the EPA Method 3051A. Among …

Metabolomic Profiling To Investigate Effect Of Curcumin In Lung Cancer, Arvind Goja

Wayne State University Dissertations

Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths in the US, in part due to poor diagnosis. Prognosis can be improved, if detected at an early stage. The objective of this study was to use the metabolomic approach to investigate early potential biomarkers for lung cancer. Golden Syrian hamsters were randomized into two groups (treatment and control). Lung cancer was induced in treatment group by a chemical carcinogen, N-nitrosobis-2-(oxopropyl) amine (BOP) while the control animals were injected with saline. Urine was collected weekly throughout the study and frozen at -800 C. Proton nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR) spectra, acquired …

Obesity in the United States has increased dramatically over the past 30 years, and the country has fallen far short of the stated objective of Healthy People 2010 of reducing the prevalence of adult obesity to 15%. Among children, obesity has increased most significantly in the 12-19 year old age group. It is well established that obesity is associated with …

The Impact Of Folate Deficiency On The Base Excision Repair Pathway: Analysis Of Enzyme Coordination In Response To Dna Damage And Imbalanced Repair, Amanda Pilling 2011 Wayne State University

The Impact Of Folate Deficiency On The Base Excision Repair Pathway: Analysis Of Enzyme Coordination In Response To Dna Damage And Imbalanced Repair, Amanda Pilling

Wayne State University Dissertations

The condition of folate deficiency has been implicated in carcinogenesis, with the strongest evidence formulated in colon cancer. The role of folate in DNA repair, DNA synthesis and methylation reactions renders this nutrient an valuable target for studying the onset and progression of cancer. Using molecular techniques to determine gene and protein expression, enzyme activity and methylation status elucidates the mechanism of DNA repair and damage in folic acid deficient animals in response to carcinogen. The findings presented in this study indicate failure to remove and repair damage in the condition of folate deficiency and suggest that the accumulation of …

Base Excision Repair, Folate Deficiency And Cancer, Archana Unnikrishnan 2011 Wayne State University

Base Excision Repair, Folate Deficiency And Cancer, Archana Unnikrishnan

Wayne State University Dissertations

Folate, an essential water soluble vitamin has been implicated in the etiology of many types of cancer especially colorectal cancer. Folate deficiency has been reported to incapacitate DNA repair pathways and thereby affect the genomic stability. Our lab has reported previously and here again through this research that folate deficiency affects the DNA damage inducibility of base excision repair pathway. Our study shows the differential effect folate deficiency has on the expression of the genes involved in this pathway. Further, our study shows the increase in preneoplastic lesions in the colon of mice exposed to folate deficiency in response to …

A Framework For Monitoring Local And Regional Food Systems, Heather Victoria Davis 2011 SIT Graduate Institute

A Framework For Monitoring Local And Regional Food Systems, Heather Victoria Davis

Capstone Collection

The US food system has been experiencing gradual, yet significant, changes in recent years - with many people recognizing that conventional approaches are not only unsustainable, but also detrimental. As an alternative paradigm, the development of local food systems has been flourishing because of the benefits they bring to us: more local control over our food; supporting the local economy and entrepreneurs; healthier food options; fewer “food miles” and the related benefits of lowered use of petroleum; stronger community bonds; job creation for our rural communities; more gentle on the environment; and a more secure food system overall. Monitoring the …

Research outputs 2011

Short-term randomised, controlled trials have found that dietary protein relative to carbohydrate can reduce blood pressure. Our objective was to investigate the effects on blood pressure of an increase in protein intake from whey over 2 years in women aged over 70 years. From the general population, 219 women aged between 70 and 80 years were recruited to a 2-year randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled parallel-design trial: 181 women completed the trial to the end of year 2. Participants were randomly assigned to consume a daily whey protein-based beverage (protein) or an energy-matched low-protein high-carbohydrate beverage (control). Blood pressure measurements were performed …

The campaign highlights two spin-off campaigns from the Healthy Monday campaign titled the Monday Mile and Meatless Monday. This study looks at the effectiveness …

The Differential Effects Of Genetic And Dietary Alterations In Folate Status On Prefrontal Cortical Functions, Jessica Amanda Ash 2011 University at Albany, State University of New York

The Differential Effects Of Genetic And Dietary Alterations In Folate Status On Prefrontal Cortical Functions, Jessica Amanda Ash

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Folate status plays an essential role in embryogenesis and brain development; however, its importance in supporting cognitive functioning throughout adulthood is less clear. The present study was interested in examining the effects of genetic and dietary alterations in folate status on prefrontal cortical functions in mice, modeling a common polymorphism in the MTHFD1 gene in folate metabolism. A factorial design was used crossing two genotypes (mice with a gene trap insertion in the Mthfd1 gene exhibiting 50% decreased Mthfd1 expression: Mthfd1gt/+ mice or wildtype mice) with two levels of dietary folate (folate sufficient or folate deficient). The mice were tested …

Effects Of Dietary Fat Saturation On Lipoprotein Metabolism In Rodents And Humans, Deepinder Kaur 2011 Wayne State University

Effects Of Dietary Fat Saturation On Lipoprotein Metabolism In Rodents And Humans, Deepinder Kaur

Wayne State University Dissertations

Consumption of trans-fatty acids (tFA) and saturated fatty acids (SFA) have been associated with higher incidence of coronary heart disease. Experimental and observational data suggests that consumption of PHVO containing tFA, like SFA leads to increased total cholesterol and LDL-cholesterol (LDL-C) but compared to tFA, SFA raises HDL-cholesterol (HDL-C). An attempt to eliminate PHVO from the food supply has resulted in the need to find alternatives which despite their higher dietary fat saturation as compared to naturally occurring vegetable oils, may be preferable to PHVO. However, amongst SFA, the effects on plasma lipoproteins are variable. Thus, we hypothesized that specific …
