Cytogenetic Characteristics Of Microtus Dogramacii (Mammalia: Rodentia) Around Amasya, Turkey, Zülal Atli Şekeroğlu, Haluk Kefeli̇oğlu, Vedat Şekeroğlu

The banding patterns of chromosomes of Microtus dogramacii, a recently described vole species endemic to Turkey, were studied. G-, C-, and Ag-NOR-banded patterns of this species are reported here for the first time. In this study, 2 karyotypical forms were determined. Each form had the same diploid chromosome numbers (2n = 48), but possessed different autosomal morphologies. For this reason, the samples collected from the research area were karyologically separated into 2 groups, cytotype-1 (NF = 50) and cytotype-2 (NF = 52). Gross morphology of the gill was studied using a scanning electron microscope (SEM) in order to associate it with its function in genus Patella. Secondary gills consisted of a single layer of gill folds, which appear mostly as triangular leaflets in scanning electron micrographs. The lamellae showed a prominent thickening on the free margin and horizontal swellings, which bear a series of ciliary structures on the frontal surface, as well as disperse bunches. The Orthoptera and Mantodea fauna of Kazdağı National Park (Balıkesir) were investigated. Field studies were conducted between 2004 and 2005. During this study, 34 species of Orthoptera (16 Tettigoniidae, 1 Oecanthidae, 2 Pamphagidae, 1 Tetrigidae, and 14 Acrididae) and 3 species of Mantodea were investigated. Isophya cania, Poecilimon luschani egrigozi, Anadolua schwarzi, Rhacocleis acutangula (Tettigoniidae), Paranocaracris rubripes burri (Pamphagidae), and one recently described species, Chorthippus (Glyptobothrus) kazdaghensis (Acrididae), are endemic taxa. Spermatheca and egg morphology of Eurygaster austriaca (Schrank, 1778) were studied by optical and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The spermatheca of E. austriaca is characterized by a spermathecal bulb, a pumping region, distal and proximal flanges and ducts, and a genital chamber. Each female was shown to deposit 14 green eggs on average in mass. The spherical eggs averaged 1.05 ± 0.05 mm in diameter. The first external evidence of embryonic development was the appearance of 2 red eye spots opposite each other beneath operculum followed by the appearance of a blackish T-shaped egg-burster between the eye spots. This study is based upon material of family Pompilidae collected from different localities in Turkey between 2000 and 2009; the other related studies on the Pompilidae in Turkey were reviewed. Dicyrtomellus kizilkumii (Radoszkowski, 1877) is a new record for Turkish fauna. The authors present also an updated checklist of the Pompilidae fauna of Turkey. Including the new taxon determined in this study a total of 200 species and 5 subspecies from 35 genera of the family Pompilidae were recorded from Turkey to date. The First Record Of Cladocora Caespitosa (Linnaeus, 1767) (Anthozoa, Scleractinia) From The Marmara Sea, Hasan Bariş Özalp, Mustafa Alparslan

The Scleractinian Cladocora caespitosa is reported for the first time from the Marmara Sea, Turkey. Five colonies of the elliptical Cladocora caespitosa were discovered at 7 m by scuba divers around Posidonia oceanica beds colonising a substrate of sand and rock. The colonies' characteristics were recorded with underwater apparatus with a close-up device and with a video system. The present paper provides the new updated area of the species on the Turkish coast.

Haemopoietic tissues of the head kidney of Clarias batrachus were studied for morphometric analysis and ultrastructural descriptions of the erythropoietic and leucopoietic cell populations. Eight successive steps of developing erythrocytes from small lymphoid haemoblasts (SLHs) to mature erythrocytes (MEs) were distinguished. Progressive loss of RNA and synthesis of haemoglobin during haemopoiesis were coupled with denser nucleus and changes in cellular shapes. Transmission electron microscopy aided in clear distinction between cell lineages in the development of erythrocytes, granulocytes, and lymphocytes. Bracon hebetor Say (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) is a gregarious synovigenic parasitoid that attacks late stage larvae of many important lepidopterous species. The purpose of the current study was to evaluate the influence of 3 constant (18, 25, and 35 °C) and 1 alternating temperature (incubator programmed to vary daily between 18, 25, and 35 °C at 8 h intervals) on protein and lipid amounts of female and male parasitoids. Protein amounts of female parasitoids were highest when exposed to alternating temperature. Some Small Mammal Fossils Of Üçağızlı Cave (Hatay, Turkey), Fadi̇me Suata Alpaslan

Small mammal assemblages of Üçağızlı Cave, 2 from the early Upper Paleolithic and 1 from the Epipaleolithic, spanning a period from 41 to 17 kya, are described. The remains are referred to as Chionomys nivalis, Microtus guentheri, Apodemus mystacinus, Apodemus flavicollis, Apodemus witherbyi, Mus macedonicus, Mesocricetus brandti, Glirulus sp., Crocidura sp., Pipistrellus cf. kuhlii, and Myotis sp. The rodent fauna of Üçağızlı suggests the dominance of open country and rocky ground with a woodland component. The eulophid parasitoids (Hymenoptera: Eulophidae) of Cameraria ohridella Deschka and Dimic (Lepidoptera: Gracillariidae) on horse chestnuts (Aesculus hippocastanum L.) in İstanbul were determined for the first time. Horse chestnut leaves infested with leafminers were collected in 2008 and adult parasitoids were obtained in emergence cages in the laboratory. A total of 10 eulophid parasitoid species were identified, 5 of which, namely Cirrospilus viticola (Rondani), Pnigalio mediterraneus (Ferriére and Delucchi), Minotetrastichus frontalis (Nees), M. platanellus (Mercet), and Closterocerus trifasciatus Westwood, were recorded for the first time in Turkey. Two species of the family Cheyletidae (Acari: Prostigmata), Cheletonella vespertilionis Womersley and Cheyletus kuznetzovi Bochkov and Khaustov, are given as new records for the Iranian fauna. This is also the first report of the genus Cheletonella Womersley from Iran.

The San Luis Valley is a large valley formation in Colorado surrounded on either side by mountain ranges exceeding 4,267 m. Within the Valley, two of the 14 amphibian and reptile species are dwarfed: the short-horned lizard (Phrynosoma hernandesi) and the Great Plains toad (Anaxyrus cognatus). Since its initial reporting in 1968 and confirmation in 1981, no research further investigating this dwarfism has been conducted. I collected morphological measurements to determine the extent and patterns of dwarfism of both species. Behavioral studies have shown that flank glands are involved in chemical communication in golden hamsters Mesocricetus auratus but little chemical analysis has been conducted on volatiles arising from these glands. Using gas chromatography- mass spectrometry, we detected compounds from the flank glands of males, only eight of which were also produced in females. Based on these chemical data we performed a number of further experiments. By manipulating light we found that males exposed to short-photoperiods developed smaller flank glands than those exposed to long-photoperiods. Six flank gland volatiles reduced in relative abundance, which possibly coded for reproductive status of males …

This was a pretty routine fall for the most part, although there were scattered early and late dates and high counts as in most seasons. Decidedly non-routine, though, was the appearance of two rarities, Ross's Gull and Brown-headed Nuthatch, both enjoyed by many. A surprising 15 gull species were reported, this without much help from L McConaughy! Also notable were the sea-ducks, scoters, and Long-tailed Duck, which were in good numbers.

Tom Labedz, collections manager at the University of Nebraska State Museum, is an excellent source; he contributed greatly to discussions herein on Greater Prairie-Chicken and Fox Sparrow.

The 2010 NOU Fall Field Days were held in McCook on September 24–26, and 57 members and friends were in attendance.

Field trip destinations included Medicine Creek Reservoir and points east, led by William Flack; Red Willow State Recreation Area and other Frontier County locations, led by T. J. Walker; and Swanson Reservoir State Recreation Area and the Benkelman sewage lagoons, led by Robin Harding and Lanny Randolph. A final tally of 131 species was recorded.

The year 2009 marked the 25th year of existence of the Nebraska Ornithologists' Union Records Committee (NOURC). Its beginning can be traced to one person—Wayne Mollhoff. Wayne raised the need for a records committee in the spring of 1985 at the NOU Annual Meeting in Gretna, Nebraska. At the general membership meeting, then-president Gary Lingle appointed Wayne to form a committee to establish a Nebraska Ornithologists' Union Records Committee. Using procedures from several other states' records committees, Wayne developed a set of operating guidelines or by-laws specific to Nebraska.
