The number of species of cnidarians and ctenophores varies greatly between regions due to thedifferent environmental conditions of the seas and the level of scientific effort in each sea. A total of 47 cnidarian and five …

Précis Of: "Birds, Bats And Minds: Tales Of A Revolutionary Scientist, Donald R. Griffin", Carolyn A. Ristau

Animal Sentience

Donald Griffin co-discovered bat sonar and founded the field of echolocation. He studied bird migration and founded Cognitive Ethology, the study of animal awareness and mental experiences. In all these endeavors, he faced hostile opposition. The biography (Ristau 2024) examines Griffin's life and the scientific explorations by him and others in these fields. This Précis emphasizes his arguments and supporting evidence for animal consciousness as well as his later research. Griffin considered the inhibiting assumptions made by scientists, including Cartesian views, the misunderstanding of innate behaviors, prejudice against lower animals, concern with violations of parsimony, and the assertions of the …

Phenology And Host Choice Among Common Yet Little Understood Wood Borers (Coleoptera: Bostrichidae) In A Midwestern Savanna, Noah I. Finney, Derek W. Rosenberger

The Great Lakes Entomologist

Horned powder-post beetles (Coleoptera: Bostrichidae) are a geographically widespread family of wood-boring beetles. While members of this family represent important grain pests, are often intercepted in ports, and may play an important role in ecosystem processes, little work has investigated bostrichid life history in their native ranges. This gap limits our ability to assess ecosystem services and invasiveness. Three native species, Amphicerus bicaudatus (Say), Scobicia bidentata (Horn), and Xylobiops basilaris (Say), are commonly found in savannas in Northern Illinois. Although little is currently known about the life history of S. bidentata, A. bicaudatus and X. basilaris can be minor pests …

Thirty male albino mice were allocated into three groups of ten each: 1) Vehicle control (Vc); 2) CCl4 (C); and 3) CCl4+ Olea ferruginea (COf). All groups, except the Vc, were administered CCl4 (0.1mL of a 0.2mLkg−1 solution) in corn oil. Over the subsequent five days, the COf group received 0.1mL of Olea ferruginea plant extract (OFPE) daily, while the Vc and CCl4 groups were provided water in …

An Assessment Of Dingo Ancestry In Camp Dogs In Western Australia, Tracey L. Kreplins, Danielle Stephens, N Laing, C Oskam 2024 Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development, Western Australia

An Assessment Of Dingo Ancestry In Camp Dogs In Western Australia, Tracey L. Kreplins, Danielle Stephens, N Laing, C Oskam

Biosecurity Research Articles

Hybridisation between Australian dingoes and domestic dogs is a controversial area of interest and research. An ongoing canine sterilisation programme in rural and remote Western Australia provided an opportunity to assess the dingo ancestry of camp dogs and opportunities for hybridisation. Blood samples were collected from 345 individual community dogs at 21 locations. Dogs were screened using 23 microsatellite loci and ancestry percentage assigned using an iterative Bayesian assignment algorithm. A single individual was a dingo, 96% were domestic dogs and 3.5% were hybrids. Camp dog and dingo hybridisation in these areas is of little concern in terms of conserving …

Serum Proteomic Profile Of Subclinical Babesia Bovis Infection In Pcr-Positive Eld's Deer Using Serum Protein Electrophoresis Coupled With Lc-Ms/Ms, Vichayanee Pumpitakkul, Sittiruk Roytrakul, Narumon Phaonakrop, Gunnaporn Suriyaphol Assoc. Prof.

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

Subclinical babesiosis observed in captive Eld’s deer, which act as reservoirs for ticks, poses a risk to healthy herds. However, the knowledge of biomarkers for subclinically infected Eld’s deer and host-parasite interactions is limited. This study aimed to investigate the serum proteomic profiles and protein interactions of Babesia bovis and subclinically infected Eld’s deer, PCR-positive for B. bovis, using automated serum protein electrophoresis and liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). The findings revealed albumin and four globulin fractions: alpha-1, alpha-2, beta, and gamma globulin. Albumin protein (ALB) was consistently detected across all fractions, highlighting its role in maintaining osmotic balance …

Morphometric And Meristic Differentiation Among Five Populations Of Delminichthys Ghetaldii (Actinopterygii, Cyprinidae) From Five Karst Fields In Eastern Herzegovina, Dušanka Berak Čihorić, Ana Marić, Danilo Mrdak, Predrag Simonović

Turkish Journal of Zoology

The primary objectives of this study were to advance our understanding of the morphological intricacies exhibited by the endemic fish species, Delminichthys ghetaldii, commonly known as the Trebinje minnow, and to determine intraspecific morphological variability. The study involved the examination of 76 mature specimens collected from five distinct karst fields located within the Dinaric region of Eastern Herzegovina, Bosnia and Herzegovina, since the year 2018. A comprehensive analysis of 22 morphometric and 8 meristic characters was conducted to unravel the underlying patterns of variation. Discriminant Function Analysis was employed for the thorough investigation of morphometric traits, whereas Canonical Correspondence Analysis …

Biosorption Of Ni (Ii), Pb (Ii) And Cu (Ii) Metal Ions On The Chitin Isolated From Spider Species Of Drassodes Lapidosus, Albulene Emini, Osman Seyyar, Yavuz Sürme

Turkish Journal of Zoology

This study evaluates the biosorption ability of chitin derived from a specific spider species namely Drassodes lapidosus (Walckenaer, 1802) belongs to Gnaphosidae family. The obtained chitin was characterized by fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis. In the alpha form of the obtained chitin, its thermal stability was observed to be 356.9 ℃ and, the Crl value was 69.16%. In addition, this chitin was used as a bioadsorbent to remove heavy metal ions such as Ni (II), Cu (II) and Pb (II) from the aqueous medium by solid phase extraction …

Green Turtle Nesting Activity On Yeniyurt Beach, Hatay, Türkiye: Six-Year Results (2017–2022), Bektaş Sönmez

Turkish Journal of Zoology

Conducting long-term conservation and monitoring activities for sea turtles provides a more precise depiction of their population status compared to studies conducted across a single year. The frequency of the nesting activity may fluctuate dramatically over time, depending on the environmental conditions. This study aimed to examine the nest count, female abundance, and reproductive output of green turtles on Yeniyurt beach in the eastern Mediterranean between 2017 and 2022. The beach was surveyed annual monitoring at consistent intervals. Temporal variations in the number of nests and the abundance of females were analyzed using the Mann-Kendall and Sen Slope tests. A …
