How Aza Zoos And Aquariums Are Helping To Fill The Gap, Erika Bauer, Grace Fuller, Candice Dorsey
Animal Sentience
Oldfield & Bonano (2024) identify significant gaps in scientific knowledge about certain animal taxa, such as reptiles, amphibians, invertebrates, and fish. Despite some efforts, published literature remains limited, forcing decision-makers to rely more on experiential knowledge than scientific evidence. AZA-accredited zoos and aquariums are uniquely positioned to bridge these gaps and advance animal welfare science by fostering collaboration, building partnerships, and promoting multi-disciplinary approaches to welfare assessments.

Publications and Research
Molecular data continue to serve as an invaluable tool to assess species limits and patterns of cryptic diversity, particularly in areas harboring high levels of biodiversity. The Sceloporus scalaris group, known as bunchgrass lizards, contains 13 described and one undescribed species distributed throughout high elevation biotas of Mexico. However, recent studies suggest that diversity in the group may be substantially underestimated. We collect new sequence data from four independent loci to determine the evolutionary distinctiveness and phylogenetic relationships of an isolated population of bunchgrass lizard in the Sierra San Juan (SSJ) in the Mexican state of Nayarit. Concatenation and coalescent-based …

Personality is crucial for understanding the lives of species because it affects how they survive, the way they move, reactions to diseases, and much more (Merrick & Koprowski, 2017; Wolf & Weissing, 2012). The importance of this research is to understand how biological sex may interact with otter personalities through social interactions amongst other otters, the physical world, and humans. Female and male otters vary in the way that they play, with males playing more rough than females (Green, 2000). Play, which is associated with rock juggling, decreases as otters mature (Alliston et al., 2020). Females used object play more …

Journal of Bioresource Management
Increasing land use for agricultural practices is commonly perceived as a threat to the avian diversity. However, a number of avian species depend on these croplands for food, water, and shelter. The present study was conducted in Khairi National Park, Pakistan, for the discourse of awareness gaps about the avifaunal diversity of the protected area and to compare the bird’s diversity in the agriculture fields and native forests. For the current study, the habitat was divided into two habitat categories, i.e., forest and croplands. The sampling was executed between February 2014 and February 2017. Stratified random sampling was used to …

New Drainage Records And Revised Ranges For Sympatric Pirate Perch Species In Alabama, Florida, And Georgia, Tyler Muller, Bryson Hilburn, Lily Hughes
Southeastern Fishes Council Proceedings
We report updated ranges for four sympatric species of Pirate Perches following a recent taxonomic revision of Aphredoderus. Using observations from recent sampling by the North Carolina State Museum of Natural Sciences and reidentifying cataloged specimens from the Georgia Museum of Natural History and Auburn University Museum collections, we were able to refine the distributions of four species throughout a complicated sympatric zone spanning coastal plain drainages in Alabama, Florida, and Georgia. We find that A. gibbosus is present in low numbers in the Flint, Escambia, Choctawhatchee, and Chattahoochee basins. These additional records nearly link the previously reported disjunct …

Integrative Taxonomy Reveals The Existence Of A New Species Of Fat-Tailed Scorpions, Androctonus (Buthidae), In Iran, Hossein Barahoei, Omid Mirshamsi, Masoumeh Amiri, Asma Moeinadini, Ehsan Rakhshani
Turkish Journal of Zoology
Two species of Androctonus have been reported to date from Iran: Androctonus crassicauda (Olivier, 1807) and A. sistanus Barahoei and Mirshamsi, 2022, which is distributed only in the southeast of Iran. Investigating and identifying the distribution range of dangerous species is critically important for scorpion management. A total of 105 specimens of Androctonus were collected from representative locations in Esfahan, Yazd, Kerman, Hormozgan, Hamadan, and Khuzestan provinces. These samples were studied morphologically, morphometrically, molecularly (COI gene sequencing), and through species distribution modeling (SDM) using the MaxEnt model. Four Androctonus species were identified through the morphological and molecular studies: A. crassicauda, …
Predicting The Suitable Habitats Of Alosimus Marginicollis (Haag-Rutenberg, 1880) (Coleoptera: Meloidae) And Evaluating Its Potential Distribution In Relation To Geographical And Climatic Barriers, Muhammed Ari̇f Demi̇r, Mahmut Kabalak
Turkish Journal of Zoology
The main objective of this study was to predict the ecological requirements of Alosimus marginicollis (Haag-Rutenberg, 1880), for which limited ecological information is available, and to predict possible suitable habitats under current conditions and different future scenarios. An ensemble model-based approach, combining multiple algorithms (GAM, GLM, MARS, MaxEnt), was used to predict suitable habitats for this species using bioclimatic, topographic and land cover variables. The models indicated that the elevation variable among the topography variables, BIO15 (precipitation seasonality) and BIO4 (temperature seasonality) among the bioclimatic variables, and the cropland variable (cultivated and managed vegetation cover) among the land cover variables …

Did Raja Asterias Ever Occur In The Sea Of Marmara Or Were Previous Records Just Cases Of Misidentified Raja Clavata?, Hakan Kabasakal, Uğur Uzer, Fi̇rdes Saadet Karakulak
Turkish Journal of Zoology
The current inventories of elasmobranchs in the Sea of Marmara have some taxonomic problems that need to be solved. One problematic species in the elasmobranch fauna of the region is Raja clavata Linnaeus, 1758, and atypically coloured specimens of this skate species may have been misidentified in the past as congeners or closely related species. The present results show that R. asterias may be a misidentified species of the family Rajidae due to confusion with the atypically coloured R. clavata. As taxonomy is central to the integration of data sources in the context of biodiversity research and management of any …
Morphological, Linear, And Geometric Morphometric Differences (Skull, Mandible, And Pelvis) Among Subspecies Of Talpa Levantis (Eulipotyphla: Talpidae) With Molecular Divergence (Mtdna And Nuclear Dna), Ahmet Yesari̇ Selçuk, Alaetti̇n Kaya, Haluk Kefeli̇oğlu
Turkish Journal of Zoology
In this study, we conducted comprehensive analysis to determine the morphological, linear morphometric, and geometric morphometric differences between three subspecies of Talpa levantis: T. levantis levantis, T. levantis dogramacii, and T. levantis transcaucasica. Molecular analyses including mitochondrial DNA (complete cyt b gene) and nuclear DNA (BRCA-2) were also used. The subspecies of T. levantis showed similarities in the parastyle of the first upper molar and the mesostyle of the second and third upper molars, as well as in the morphology of the pelvis and linear measurements of the ventral skull, mandible, and pelvis. T. levantis dogramacii and T. levantis levantis …

Influence Of Inselbergs On Bat Diversity In Afrotropical Ecosystems, Amanda Lee Grunwald
Dissertations and Theses
Humans are altering biological communities on local to global scales, driving profound changes in biodiversity and ecosystem functioning. However, significant gaps and biases in biodiversity data hinder our understanding of ecosystem interactions, making it challenging to develop effective, data-driven policies to protect remaining biodiversity. Bats, the second most species-rich groups of mammals, have a global distribution, and perform a broad array of vital ecosystem functions. Their diversity peaks in the tropics, where they often constitute more than 50% of mammal species diversity. The Afrotropics host substantial bat diversity, yet have historically been perceived as having lower species richness compared to …
