Since 1998 the Department of Agriculture and Food, Western Australia (DAFWA) in conjunction with the Western Australian Vine Improvement Association (WAVIA) have imported over 60 new varieties and clones of wine grape material into Western Australia. These new varieties and clones were identified by the wine industry as having both domestic and international wine market potential to enhance the production and development of premium WA wine.

This project examines how Oregon winemakers present themselves to the media and their consumers, and whether or not their portrayal is received correctly by these sources. This research focuses mainly on what message producers convey to the media and how that, in turn, reaches consumers, while focusing more specifically on Oregon winemakers. The goals for this project are to further agenda-setting research in regards to consumer products and to advance the meaningfulness of mass communication and public relations.

Background: Downy mildew (DM), caused by pathogen Plasmopara viticola (PV) is the single most damaging disease of grapes (Vitis L.) worldwide. However, the mechanisms of the disease development in grapes are poorly understood. A method for estimating gene expression levels using Solexa sequencing of Type I restriction-endonuclease-generated cDNA fragments was used for deep sequencing the transcriptomes resulting from PV infected leaves of Vitis amurensis Rupr. cv. Zuoshan-1. Our goal is to identify genes that are involved in resistance to grape DM disease.
