Superweeds And Suspect Seeds: Does The Genetically-Engineered Crop Deregulation Process Put American Agriculture At Risk, Margaret Sova Mccabe

Law Faculty Scholarship

The federal government’s regulatory approach to genetically engineered (GE) crops, known as “The Framework”, is now twenty-five years old. Despite two and half decades of a consistent regulatory regime, GE crop and food regulation remains controversial. This article suggests that regulatory science and its tenets of independence, transparency, and public science should guide reforms of The Framework so that it is an efficient and reliable regulatory system. The article has four parts: 1) it provides a brief overview of the history of GE crop regulation; 2)it describes the key attributes of The Framework and related regulatory documents, with particular focus …

Sowing The Seeds Of Change : The Back To The Land Movement In St. Lawrence County, Ny 1960-1980, Willow Nolland

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

From 1965 - 1980, numerous individuals established homesteads and communes in St. Lawrence County, NY as part of the Back to the Land Movement. The Back to the Land movement occurred as a direct response to the problems that arose in the 1960's and 1970's. Unlike the radical activists of the 1960's, the Back to the Landers chose to show their disgust with mainstream society by dropping out. They sold their belongings and relocated to the country, where they attempted to live off the land. St. Lawrence County was a popular destination for Back to the Landers because it offered …

Stewards Of The Land : Demonstrations Of Agricultural Authenticity In Columbia County, Ny, Jaclyn Rose Bruntfield 2012 University at Albany, State University of New York

Stewards Of The Land : Demonstrations Of Agricultural Authenticity In Columbia County, Ny, Jaclyn Rose Bruntfield

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

The origins of food in the U.S. have come under close public scrutiny in recent years. An increasing number of farmers markets, certified organic products, and Community Supported Agriculture programs indicate that Americans are seeking out alternatives to the mainstream food system. The industrialization of food production in the post-World War II era, while providing larger amounts of inexpensive food than ever before, has arguably compromised people's relationships with food. While farming was once a common way of life in the U.S., today only one percent of Americans identify farming as their primary occupation.

Agriculture In New York State : Farm Size And Its Implications To Farmland Protection And Biodiversity Conservation, Julianna Marie Potter

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

In the United States there are 939 million acres of land held by ranchers and farmers. Conservation of this agricultural landscape is critical to the protection of biodiversity. Management of agricultural land is also associated with the success of biodiversity protection efforts in protected areas, including parks and preserves, as well as outside protected areas. Sustained viability of the New York farming sector will enhance and secure biodiversity on farmland, as viable farms will remain part of the landscape.

Effect Of Growth Promotants On The Occurrence Of Endogenous And Synthetic Steroid Hormones On Feedlot Soils And In Runoff From Beef Cattle Feeding Operations, Shannon L. Bartelt-Hunt, Daniel D. Snow, William L. Kranz, Terry L. Mader, Charles A. Shapiro, Simon Van Donk, David P. Shelton, David Tarkalson, Tian Zhang

West Central Research and Extension Center, North Platte

Supplements and growth promotants containing steroid hormones are routinely administered to beef cattle to improve feeding efficiency, reduce behavioral problems, and enhance production. As a result, beef cattle manure will contain both synthetic steroids as well as a range of endogenous steroids including androgens, estrogens, and progestogens. A two-year controlled study was conducted in which beef cattle were administered steroid hormones via subcutaneous implants and feed additives and the occurrence of 16 endogenous and synthetic steroid hormones and metabolites was evaluated in runoff from beef cattle feedlots and in manure and soil collected from feedlot surfaces. Samples were extracted and …

The Impacts Of Foot-And-Mouth Disease On International Pork Trade – An Extension Of Gravity Model, Shang-Ho Yang

Theses and Dissertations--Agricultural Economics

Food safety scares affect consumption behavior, and food safety and animal health issues are increasingly impacting international agricultural trade. Foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) is a highly contagious viral-type disease, and has raised not only the concerns of animal health issue but also food safety issue. Over 58 countries in the world have experienced FMD outbreaks, and pork exports and imports among these countries are largely impacted. This dissertation focuses on how global pork trade is affected by FMD.

This dissertation consists of three parts: first, this study specifically focuses on the market of U.S. pork exports. Results show that disease-affected pork …

Induction Of Variability Through Mutagenesis In Opium Poppy (Papaver Somniferum L.), Avijeet Chatterjee, Sudhir Shukla, Brij Kishore Mishra, Anu Rastogi, Sant Prasad Singh

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

Opium poppy (Papaver somniferum L.), an important plant of the family Papaveraceae, is valued for its extensive medicinal properties due to the presence of more than 80 different alkaloids, which are products of the polygenic interaction of different genes involved in plant metabolism. Broadening the genetic base through induced mutation is a supplementary tool that can lead to the development of genetic variability. The present study was undertaken to generate a broad genetic variability through mutation breeding using physical doses (gamma radiation of kR10 to kR50 at an interval of kR10), chemical doses (EMS of 0.2, 0.4, 0.6, and 0.8% …

Evidence For The Origin Of The B Genome Of Bread Wheat Based On Chloroplast Dna, NADIA HAIDER 2012 TÜBİTAK

Evidence For The Origin Of The B Genome Of Bread Wheat Based On Chloroplast Dna, Nadia Haider

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

The hexaploid bread wheat Triticum aestivum L. (AABBDD) is thought to have originated through one or more rare hybridization events between Aegilops tauschii (DD) and the tetraploid Emmer wheat T. turgidum subsp. dicoccon (AABB). The progenitor of the A genome of T. aestivum has generally been accepted to be T. urartu. The origin of the B genome, however, is controversial and still relatively unknown. Research has found the B genome in T. turgidum to be closely similar to the S genome in section Sitopsis of Aegilops L.; the Sitopsis diploid species were thus proposed as the probable maternal parent in …
