Stem rust, caused by the fungus Puccinia graminis f. sp. tritici (Pgt), is one of the most important diseases limiting wheat production in Turkey. Surveys were conducted in 2007 and 2008 in order to determine the races of the pathogen present in Turkey. In 2007, it was found that 91 (43%) out of 207 inspected wheat fields were infected with stem rust, and in 2008, it was found that 61 (25%) out of 242 inspected fields were infected. The rootstock potential of 21 bottle gourds (Lagenaria siceraria) collected from the Mediterranean region (Turkey) was investigated for watermelon with regard to plant growth, yield, and fruit quality. The Crimson Tide watermelon cultivar was used as a scion and 2 commercial rootstocks (L. siceraria) were also used for comparison. In greenhouse conditions, the survival rate of grafted plants and the effect of rootstocks on plant growth were determined. Ficus carica L. is one of the most important fruit species in Turkey. For this study, 76 fig accessions were collected from Hatay, in the Eastern Mediterranean Region of Turkey, in 2008 and 2009; the morphological diversity of plants and fruits was evaluated. Of the samples studied, 2 accessions were determined to be first crop (breba) and the other 74 accessions were identified as main crop. The effects of inoculum concentrations and the aggressiveness of spot blotch (Bipolaris sorokiniana (Sacc.) Shoemaker) isolates were evaluated on the resistance of 123 winter wheat advanced breeding lines developed from European winter wheat as well as on 3 control cultivars, BR8, BH1146, and Zentos. The test was conducted under laboratory conditions using a detached leaf technique. A total of 3 inoculum concentrations were used: 0.5 × 10^3, 1 × 10^3, and 5 × 10^3 spores mL^{-1}. Oilseed Rape (Brassica Napus L.) Genotypic Variation In Response To Boron Deficiency, Jasna Savic, Volker Römheld, Miroslav Nikolic

Boron efficiency of 16 oilseed rape genotypes was tested using both hydroponic and pot-soil growing techniques. From the nutrient solution experiment (0.1 and 10 µM B), 4 representative contrasting genotypes were selected based on relative root and shoot growth. These were then grown in pots with low-B soil (0.25 mg kg^{-1}). From the nutrient solution experiment, 2 genotypes selected as B-inefficient did not show any growth disorders, and the concentration of B in the shoots was above critical. The results of studying the effects of sunflower seed priming with an aqueous solution of ascorbic acid (A), tocopherol (T), and glutathione (G) performed prior to accelerated ageing and a cold test are presented in this paper. Germination, the percentage of abnormal seedlings, and the lengths of both roots and shoots were monitored. The results showed that the cold test caused a drastic drop in germination, an adverse effect on the shoot length, an increase in the percentage of abnormal seedlings, and no effect on the root length. The root distribution pattern of 3 grape rootstocks, Dog Ridge, Salt Creek, and St. George, grafted with Thompson Seedless grapevine was studied at the National Research Centre for Grapes in Pune, India. The soil is heavy black cotton soil (vertisol) with a pH of >8.0. Two Japanese-type plum (Prunus salicina Lindell) cultivars, 'Autumn Giant' and 'Black Beauty', were harvested at commercial maturity stage and either packed in nonperforated modified atmosphere packaging (MAP) or treated with a 500 ppb dose of 1-methylcyclopropene (1-MCP) alone or given a combination of 1-MCP and MAP. After these treatments, the plum samples were stored at 0 °C for 60 days. Seeds of 14 commonly found plant species from 3 different families (Brassicaceae, Dipsacaceae, and Asteraceae) were investigated for 1000-seed weights (g), total oil (%), total protein (%), total soluble sugar contents (TSS; mg g^{-1}), and fatty acid compositions (%). Correlation coefficients of fatty acids from different families were investigated, as well. Palmitic, stearic, oleic, linoleic, linolenic, eicosenoic, and erucic acids were present in varying amounts. Within the family Brassicaceae, only Cardaria draba did not contain eicosenoic and erucic acids, while species of the Asteraceae and Dipsacaceae did not contain linolenic, eicosenoic, or erucic acids. Two aluminum compounds, AlCl_3 and Al(OH)_3, were used to determine the effect of Al compounds on pH and bioavailability of Al in 2 acid soils. Both soils were incubated for periods of 3, 10, and 30 days. Al-tolerant (ET8) and Al-sensitive (ES8) wheat seedlings were used as a testing plant to confirm bioavailability of Al^{3+} in soil solution. Both soils were acidified through the addition of Al compounds to detect the maximum Al^{3+} toxicity level of these compounds. The results showed that the AlCl3 compound increased the bioavailability of Al^{3+} in soil solutions. In contrast, AlCl_3 decreased bulk soil pH. …

In this study, wetting front or wetted bulb coordinates in soil under surface trickle irrigation were measured for 1 loam soil and 2 sandy loam soils with 2 different emitter discharges of 2 and 4 L h^{-1} by using the trenching method. A sunflower testing network that included 25 commercial hybrids and 26 sites in Serbia was analyzed by the sites regression biplot based on grain yield data in 2006 and 2007. The scientific aims of our study were to determine the representativeness and discriminating ability of the test sites and to identify good test sites for selecting generally and specifically adapted sunflower hybrids. The influence of CaCl_2 and borax on growth, yield, and quality of tomato was investigated during the years 2009 and 2010. The experiment was laid out with a randomized complete block design. Calcium chloride (0.3% and 0.6%) and borax (0.2% and 0.4%) solutions were applied as foliar sprays either alone or in combination and data were recorded for plant height, branches per plant, flowers per cluster, fruits per plant, yield, fruit weight, fruit firmness, and total soluble solid content of the fruit. Seedling root morphology plays a crucial role in seedling survival and stand establishment. Naturalized yellow-flowered alfalfa (YFA) (Medicago sativa subsp. falcata) has demonstrated adaptation to semiarid conditions of the Northern Great Plains and tolerance to grazing. Seedling stage root morphology is poorly defined. Our objective was to compare morphological traits of seedling roots for six alfalfa populations. Six entries were evaluated: one M. sativa population as a control, two M. falcata entries, with reported “spreading characteristics” and three naturalized YFA populations.
