Double Difference Approach To Impact Evaluation: Case Of The Effects Of The Comprehensive Agrarian Reform Program (Carp) On Poverty, Prudenciano U. Gordoncillo
Journal of Public Affairs and Development
The Comprehensive Agrarian Reform Program of the Philippines has been one of the major programs of the government since its implementation in 1988. Over the years, a considerable amount of financial resources has been spent for the program that an impact evaluation is merited. Studies have established the impact of the program on some outcome variables like income and poverty. However, the studies done were limited to either a temporal comparison between the period before and after the program or a comparison between the beneficiaries and non-beneficiaries of the program. This study explored the double difference approach to verify the …

A Real-Time Plant Discrimination System Utilising Discrete Reflectance Spectroscopy, Paul Symonds, Arie Paap, Kamal Alameh, J Rowe, C Miller
Research outputs 2014 to 2021
An advanced, proof-of-concept real-time plant discrimination system is presented that employs two visible (red) laser diodes (635. nm, 685. nm) and one near-infrared (NIR) laser diode (785. nm). The lasers sequentially illuminate the target ground area and a linear sensor array measures the intensities of the reflected laser beams. The spectral reflectance measurements are then processed by an embedded microcontroller running a discrimination algorithm based on dual Normalised Difference Vegetation Indices (NDVI). Pre-determined plant spectral signatures are used to define unique regions-of-classification for use by the discrimination algorithm. Measured aggregated NDVI values that fall within a region-of-classification (RoC) representing an …

Sensitivity Of Soil Evaporation And Reference Evapotranspirationto Climatic Variables In South Korea, Mehmet Aydin, Yeong-Sang Jung, Jae E. Yang, Su-Jung Kim, Kyung-Dae Kim
Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry
The quantification of evapotranspiration and soil evaporation is crucial for agricultural water management. The FAO-56 Penman-Monteith and E-DiGOR models were used to compute reference evapotranspiration (Eto) and bare soil evaporation, respectively, at 17 meteorological stations of South Korea, from 1980 to 2009. The same soil parameters were assumed for all stations in order to compare actual soil evaporation (Ea) rates jointly dominated by atmospheric evaporative demand and soil water availability, as well as the size of rainfall events. The sensitivity of Penman-Monteith type equations to the major climatic variables was determined based on 1-year dataset. The long-term mean annual precipitation …

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry
Banana (Musa spp.) is an important tropical fruit with high commercial potential. Musa balbisiana (B genome) is a progenitor of one of the most cultivated banana species and exhibits unique traits, including resistance or tolerance to many biotic and abiotic stresses. RNA sequencing of the Musa B genome would provide a vast array of transcriptomic information that could lead to the development of trait-specific markers and the discovery of new genes and regulatory sequences involved in resistance mechanisms. Thus, transcriptome sequencing was performed in Musa B genome accession Attikol using the Ion Torrent platform. This led to the generation of …

Incidence Of Microbial Infections Revealed By Assessing Nodulation Infield-Collected Insects From Adana Province, Hasan Tunaz, Mehmet Kubi̇lay Er, Ali̇ Arda Işikber
Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry
Results of a field study designed to assess the extent of natural microbial infections in insects collected from agrarian fields surrounding Adana, Turkey, are reported. We identified and dissected specimens to assess the numbers of nodules. Formation of darkened melanotic nodules is the predominant cellular immune reaction to microbial and parasitic infection, and once formed, the nodules are permanently attached to internal surfaces. At least some nodules were found in 99% of 1200 examined specimens that were healthy in appearance. The number of nodules ranged approximately from 1 nodule/individual to >120 nodules/individual. We inferred that insects are regularly challenged by …

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry
Molybdenum cofactor sulfurases (MCSUs) are important enzymes for plant development and response to environmental queues, including processes such as nitrogen metabolism and regulation of the abscisic acid levels in plant tissues. We cloned and sequenced MCSU gene from barley and performed in silico comparison with rice, tomato, and Arabidopsis. Physico-chemical properties and subcellular predictions were found to be similar in different plant species. All MCSUs had three critical domains: aminotransferase class-V (Pfam: PF00266), MOSC N-terminal beta barrel (Pfam: PF03476), and MOSC (Pfam: PF03473). Secondary structure analysis revealed that random coils were the most abundant, followed by α-helices and extended strands. …

Plants unlike other living forms are sessile thereby facing severe biotic and abiotic stresses. Plants have evolved different efficient defence responses which thrive upon a number of intrinsic factors, such as genotypic and phenotypic constitutions and developmental circumstances, and extrinsic factors like severity and duration of the stresses. Stress management uses molecular and biochemical level controls, the competence, and speed, at which a stress signal is perceived and transmitted to generate stress signal molecules and activate stress-protective mechanisms. A well-concerted action of the plants’ competence at morphological, physiological, biochemical, and molecular strata regulates numerous adaptive responses to biotic and abiotic …

The role of photodegradation, an abiotic process, has been largely overlooked during straw decomposition in mesic ecosystems. We investigated the mass loss and chemical structures of straw decomposition in response to elevated UV-B radiation with or without soil contact over a 12-month litterbag experiment. Wheat and maize straw samples with and without soil contact were exposed to three radiation levels: a no-sunlight control, ambient solar UV-B, and artificially elevated UV-B radiation. A block control with soil contact was not included. Compared with the no-sunlight control, UV-B radiation increased the mass loss by 14-19% and the ambient radiation by 9-16% for …
