Effects Of Post-Hatch Holding Time And Early Nutrition Strategies On Growth Performance, Carcass And Skeletal Characteristics Of Young Chickens, Marquisha A. Paul
Theses and Dissertations--Animal and Food Sciences
The study objectives of this thesis were to evaluate the effects of delayed feeding and specific aspects of the Programmed Nutrition (PN) feeding strategy (Alltech, Inc.) on growth performance, carcass characteristics, and skeletal characteristics of commercial broiler chicks through market age, as well as investigate the effects of breed and the PN feeding strategy on early growth and development. When commercial broiler chicks were fed reduced nutrient diets, delayed feeding decreased early growth performance and carcass yield (P<0.05), whereas post-hatch PN conditioning for 72 hours improved early growth performance and alleviated the negative effects of delayed feeding on carcass yield (P<0.05). Through market age, delayed feeding improved Gain: Feed (P<0.05), while PN had the opposite effect. Interactive effects and main effects of delayed feeding and PN were observed for tissue mineral concentration (P<0.05). PN lowered bone ash % (P<0.05) and increased meat oxidation of broiler chicks during storage (P<0.05). PN also had negative effects on early growth performance and bone breaking strength (P<0.05) of various meat-type breeds, but especially for non-commercial, moderate-growing or fast-growing breeds. In conclusion, PN may be suitable for commercial broiler chicks that experience delayed feeding and are fed reduced nutrient diets.

Using The Indicator Amino Acid Oxidation Technique To Study Threonine Requirements In Horses Fed Different Feed Compositions, Chanhee Mok
Theses and Dissertations--Animal and Food Sciences
Threonine has been reported to be the second limiting amino acid in typical equine diets, but its actual requirement has not been determined in horses. The indicator amino acid oxidation (IAAO) method has been successfully used for evaluating amino acid metabolism and requirements in animals and humans. The objective of this research was to use the IAAO method to estimate threonine requirements in mature horses fed two different feed compositions. In the first study, 6 Thoroughbred mares (4 – 16 years old) received each of 6 levels of threonine intake in a high concentrate diet, in a randomly determined order. …

Fusarium head blight (FHB), mainly caused by Fusarium graminearum, is a devastating disease of wheat that results in economic losses worldwide. During infection, F. graminearum produces trichothecene mycotoxins, including deoxynivalenol (DON), that increase fungal virulence and reduce grain quality. Transgenic wheat expressing a barley UDP-glucosyltransferase (HvUGT13248) were developed and evaluated for FHB resistance, DON accumulation, and the ability to metabolize DON to the less toxic DON-3-O-glucoside (D3G). Pointinoculation tests in the greenhouse showed that transgenic wheat carrying HvUGT13248 exhibited significantly higher resistance to disease spread in the spike (type II resistance) compared with nontransformed controls. Two transgenic …

The recommended level of nitrogen, based on soil test …
Silicon-Mediated Oxidative Stress Tolerance And Genetic Variability In Rice(Oryza Sativa L.) Grown Under Combined Stress Of Salinity And Boron Toxicity, Muhammad Ansar Farooq, Zulfiqar Ahmad Saqib, Javaid Akhtar
Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry
The benefits of silicon (Si) in improving crop fitness by biotic and abiotic stress resistance are widely reported. However, investigations about its protective mechanisms for plants facing multiple stresses are very limited. Two contrasting rice cultivars, KS-282 (salt-tolerant) and IRRI-6 (salt-sensitive), were grown in a pot experiment to study the interrelation between Si supplementation (0 and 150 mg kg-1) and boron (B) toxicity (0 and 2.5 mg kg-1) under salinity stress with emphasis on growth response, mineral contents, physiology, and enzymatic antioxidant system response. The results revealed that adverse growth conditions, particularly the combined stress of salinity and B toxicity, …

A Comprehensive Understanding Of Corpse Management In Termites, Qian Sun
Theses and Dissertations--Entomology
Undertaking behavior is the disposal of dead individuals in social colonies to prevent potential pathogenic attack. This behavioral trait has convergently evolved in social insects (primarily termites, ants, and honeybee), and is considered an essential adaptation to social living. In honey bee and ants, workers recognize dead colony members through the postmortem change of chemical profile, and corpses are usually removed out of nest. However, in termites, little is known about the behavioral pattern, chemical cue or molecular basis. In the eastern subterranean termite, Reticulitermes flavipes, this study investigated undertaking behavior toward corpses of different origins and postmortem times. …
Crude Extract Of Trichoderma Elicits Agarwood Substances In Cell Suspensionculture Of The Tropical Tree, Aquilaria Malaccensis Lam., Shashita Jayaraman, Rozi Mohamed
Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry
Agarwood is the precious fragrant wood produced by the tropical tree Aquilaria, often after elicitation by wounding or fungal attack. In this study we established a cell suspension culture of A. malaccensis from leaf-derived callus and induced agarwood production in the culture using fungal elicitors. Elicitors were made from crude mycelial extracts of two fungal species from the genera Trichoderma and Lasidiplodia. The elicitors were added to the cell suspension culture, initiated with 2 g of fresh calli, at concentrations ranging from 2 to 10 mg L-1. A light agarwood scent was detected from the suspension culture elicited with 8 …

Genetic Variation In Wheat Germplasm For Salinity Tolerance Atseedling Stage: Improved Statistical Inference, Babar Hussain, Abdus Salam Khan, Zulfiqar Ali
Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry
Salinity is the major threat to global wheat production, particularly in arid and semiarid areas. Breeding salt-tolerant cultivars is one feasible solution, while the presence of genetic variation is a prerequisite for genetic improvement. To detect genetic variation for salt tolerance in wheat, a total of 150 wheat genotypes were tested for seedling-stage tolerance response at 300 mM NaCl in hydroponic culture. Significant differences (P ≤ 0.001) were identified in wheat for seedling traits, and 20 salt-tolerant and 5 susceptible genotypes were selected on the basis of root and shoot weights. These 25 genotypes were tested for salt-tolerance response at …

Physical And Chemical Properties Of Recently Deposited Sediments In The Reservoir Of The Borçka Dam In Artvin, Turkey, Bülent Turgut, Mehmet Özalp, Bahti̇yar Köse
Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry
Large dams produce important changes in flow regime and sediment deposition and distribution in rivers. When inundation starts with the building of dams, water surface area increases, flow rate decreases, and sediment carried by the river is deposited in the reservoir. However, there is a lack of research on the physical and chemical properties of recently deposited sediment in reservoirs of large dams. We aimed to fill this gap in the literature by providing valuable data on the initial formation of sediment deposition areas in reservoirs. Therefore, the aim of this study conducted within the Borçka Dam reservoir was to …

The purpose of this study was to develop and evaluate the flow rate, spray pattern, and droplet spectra characteristics of an actively controlled variable-orifice nozzle at constant carrier pressures. A commercially available variable-orifice nozzle (VariTarget) was modified to allow for direct electromechanical control of the metering stem. The modified system was tested at five carrier pressures ranging from 138 to 414 kPa and five metering stem (and thus orifice) positions. The metering stem position range was chosen because it provided a linear response in flow rate at each carrier pressure. Flow rate testing indicated a turndown ratio of 2.4:1 at …
