Evaluation Of Native Entomopathogenic Nematodes For The Control Of The European Cherry Fruit Fly Rhagoletis Cerasi L. (Diptera: Tephritidae) Larvae In Soil, İlker Kepenekci̇, Selçuk Hazir, Ayşe Özdem

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

Turkey is the world's largest producer of sweet cherries. The European cherry fruit fly, Rhagoletis cerasi L. (Diptera: Tephritidae), is a major pest of sweet cherry crops in Europe and Turkey. The detection of only one larva in the fruit by the processor can result in the rejection of the entire crop of that orchard and/or farm as \"wormy\" and unmarketable. The main control tactic for R. cerasi is to prevent the females from laying eggs in the fruit. Currently, only a few insecticides are being used, and their application is debatable due to problems with residual ecotoxicity for humans …

LIB 322: Wicked Problems of Sustainability

The Heartside Gleaning Initiative (HGI) is a Grand Rapids based non-profit organization that collects unsold produce from the city’s two farmers markets and distributes it to the low-income residents of the Heartside Neighborhood. Through their efforts they increase access to healthy and local foods as well as combat food waste in the Heartside Community. Seeing the value of this work, we, an interdisciplinary team of Grand Valley State University students, sought to further the mission of the HGI by focusing predominantly on two vital aspects of any non-profit business: promoting and funding. In the winter semester of 2015 we established …

The possibility of obtaining dihaploid durum wheat (Triticum durum L.) plants by interspecific hybridization with Imperata cylindrica L. was studied. Ten local varieties and 1 commercial durum wheat variety (Triticum durum L., 2n = 4x = 28; AABB) were used as maternal lines. Imperata cylindrica L. (2n = 2x = 20) ecotypes sampled from different districts of Hatay were used as the pollen source. Isolated embryos were placed in an MS medium for plant regeneration 14 days after the interspecific hybridization. The highest average seed setting, embryo formation, and dihaploid plant regeneration for the different hybrid combinations were determined as …

Journal of Economics, Management and Agricultural Development

The objective of this study is to provide a better understanding of the snail dredging industry and its current situation. Specifically, it describes the snail dredging activities done in selected areas in Laguna Lake, determines the profitability of snail dredging, and identifies the market destinations of the snails dredged. Snail dredging has been banned because of its adverse effects on the lake environment. However, the study finds that snail dredgers continue to operate all year round. On a daily basis, dredging operations range from 4 to 10 hours. Snails dredged from Laguna Lake are brought to the provinces of Pampanga …

Decoy Effect And Student Preference With Regard To Usb Flash Drives, jeff arapoc 2015 University of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB)

Decoy Effect And Student Preference With Regard To Usb Flash Drives, Jeff Arapoc

Journal of Economics, Management and Agricultural Development

Standard economic theory assumes that individuals make decisions that are consistent across different choice situations. Behavioral economics challenges the standard economic theory account of individual behavior. This budding field suggests that consumer preference for one option over another changes as a result of adding another option. This study aims to determine the effect of a decoy option on consumer preference for USB flash drives. A quasi-experiment was conducted among 100 UPLB students wherein each respondent was initially asked to choose between two kinds of flash drive. The researcher then adds a decoy option to test if the respondent will change …

Farmers’ Willingness To Pay For An Alternative Irrigation Policy To Reduce Greenhouse Gas Emissions From Rice Farming In The Upper Pampanga River Integrated Irrigation System, Fezoil Luz C. Farmers’ Willingness To Pay For An Alternative Irrigation Policy To Reduce Greenhouse Gas Emissions From Rice Farming In The Upper Pampanga River Integrated Irrigation System, Fezoil Luz C. Decena, Impa Buayon

Journal of Economics, Management and Agricultural Development

The practice of continuous flooding of rice fields in the national irrigation systems has attendant issues, including the inefficient use of water, unequal distribution of water along the irrigation canals, and greenhouse gas emissions. An ex-ante analysis was conducted to evaluate alternative policy options in the Upper Pampanga River Integrated Irrigation Systems, using both market and non-market approaches. The market approach estimated the greenhouse gas avoided and water savings due to the shift in policy. The non-market approach used choice experiment to estimate willingness to pay of farmers to shift the current to an alternative policy. The study concludes that …

Price Cointegration And Leadership In Regional Tilapia And Roundscad Markets In The Philippines,1990-2007, Yolanda T. Garcia 2015 University of the Philippines Los Banos

Price Cointegration And Leadership In Regional Tilapia And Roundscad Markets In The Philippines,1990-2007, Yolanda T. Garcia

Journal of Economics, Management and Agricultural Development

This study aims to investigate the price dynamics between the wholesale and retail prices of roundscad and tilapia in the regional markets of the Philippines. It also seeks to analyze how the observed dynamics in these prices could be linked to the development in market-related infrastructures that can promote trade, e.g., telecommunication and transportation facilities. Results of the study reveal that there is a general decrease in the number of regions that show cointegrated wholesale and retail prices over time in both fish species. Moreover, price leadership under the “Granger-causality” sense (of either wholesale or retail price) seems to diminish …

Building Disaster Resilience To Address Household Food Security: The Case Of Sta. Rosa-Silang Subwatershed, Roberto F. Ranola Jr., Mi Cuesta, Bam Zaraf

Journal of Economics, Management and Agricultural Development

The Laguna Lake Region is one of the places in the Philippines that are most vulnerable to natural disasters because of their location and ecological condition. Among the natural calamities that regularly hit the country, one of the most frequent and disastrous is flooding. The most affected are the poor who are faced with the double risk of being food insecure and living in conditions that are very vulnerable to natural hazards. The most negative and long-term effect of flooding is reduction in food security because flooding erodes the asset base of households that in turn results in the adoption …

Notes On The Practice Of Food Justice In The U.S.: Understanding And Confronting Trauma And Inequity, Rachel Slocum, Kirsten Valentine Cadieux 2015 University of Minnesota - Twin Cities

Notes On The Practice Of Food Justice In The U.S.: Understanding And Confronting Trauma And Inequity, Rachel Slocum, Kirsten Valentine Cadieux

College of Liberal Arts All Faculty Scholarship

In this article, we focus on one of the four nodes (trauma/inequity, exchange, land and labor) around which food justice organizing appears to occur: acknowledging and confronting historical, collective trauma and persistent race, gender, and class inequality. We apply what we have learned from our research in U.S. and Canadian agri-food systems to suggest working methods that might guide practitioners as they work toward food justice, and scholars as they seek to study it. In the interests of ensuring accountability to socially just research and action, we suggest that scholars and practitioners need to be more clear on what it …
