Boron Affects The Yield And Quality Of Nonirrigated Pistachio (Pistacia Vera L.) Trees, İzzet Açar, İlhan Doran, Nevzat Aslan, Ni̇lgün Kalkanci

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

In Turkey, more than 95% of the pistachio (Pistacia vera L.) orchards are not irrigated. Therefore, a 4-year field trial was conducted to determine the effect of Tarımbor fertiliser (containing 18.5% boron [B]) on the yield, quality, and B content of two pistachio cultivars ('Uzun' and 'Siirt') planted under nonirrigated conditions. Tarımbor was applied to the pistachio trees as a soil application (0, 200, 400, and 600 g/tree) and a foliar spray (0%, 0.1%, 0.2%, and 0.3% w/v, using a tractor-mounted sprayer at the 'early bud break' stage and the 'fully leafed out' stage). Both the soil and foliar applications …

Cattle Grazing Effects On Phragmites Australis In Nebraska, Jerry D. Volesky, Stephen L. Young, Karla H. Jenkins Pas

West Central Research and Extension Center, North Platte

Phragmites australis (common reed) is one of the most widely distributed flowering plants in North America. The introduced lineage occurs in wetland and riparian areas covering a range of climatic types. In Nebraska, an abundance of livestock could help to reduce P. australis with proper timing and grazing intensities. In 2011, a 3-yr study was initiated to evaluate targeted cattle grazing and herbicide effects and the nutritive value of this species. Treatments included a single application of imazapyr (Habitatt, BASF Corporation, Research Triangle Park, NC) herbicide applied in the first year, grazing, and a control. Grazing was applied for up …

Evaluation Of Tillage, Crop Rotation, And Cover Crop Impacts On Corn Nitrogen Requirements In Southeastern South Dakota, Sara Louise Berg 2016 South Dakota State University

Evaluation Of Tillage, Crop Rotation, And Cover Crop Impacts On Corn Nitrogen Requirements In Southeastern South Dakota, Sara Louise Berg

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Nitrogen (N) is a vital factor of corn (Zea mays) production. Previous work in South Dakota has shown that there is uncertainty as to whether nitrogen requirements are the same for corn raised under no-till (NT) versus conventional till (CT) production systems. The objective of this study was to evaluate whether N requirements continue to be greater under long-term NT versus CT production systems in southeastern South Dakota, while also considering effects from cover crops and crop rotation. This was a two year study conducted at the SDSU Southeast Research Farm near Beresford, SD; it was superimposed on a long-term …

Investigating Grassland And Cropland Conversion Decisions In The Dakotas, 2015 Producers Survey And Analysis, Md Niaz Murshed Chowdhury

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study investigates grassland and cropland conversion decisions in the Dakotas. Data from a 2015 survey completed by 1,026 producers located in 57 counties of the Prairie Pothole Region (PPR) were used to evaluate land conversions. This thesis attempts to identify the land use conversion incidence and rate (grass to crop and crop to grass); the link between past and projected land use conversion decisions in the Dakotas, and determinants of land use conversion using different statistical tools, including logistic regression methods. A regional analysis of converted acres reveals that the grass to crop conversion rates (as percent of 2014 …

The Impact Genetically Modified Traits Have Had On Corn Yields, Nolan High 2016 University of Nebraska at Kearney

The Impact Genetically Modified Traits Have Had On Corn Yields, Nolan High

Undergraduate Research Journal

The percent of corn acres planted in the United States using genetically modified (GM) seeds has almost quadrupled since 2000 (USDA, NASS, 2014). An increasing world population and limited supply of land has required another alternative source to meet the increasing demand for food, feed, and fiber (Barrows et al., 2013). One alternative source to meet increasing demand is GM seeds (Barrows et al., 2013). Studies examining the potential benefits of GM seeds have taken a broad worldview and estimated most of their own data.

The purpose of this paper is to look at the effects GM traits have on …

Adoption Of Precision Agriculture Practices And Their Effect On Us Farm Expenditures On A Dollar Per Acre Basis, Logan Krueger 2016 University of Nebraska at Kearney

Adoption Of Precision Agriculture Practices And Their Effect On Us Farm Expenditures On A Dollar Per Acre Basis, Logan Krueger

Undergraduate Research Journal

The percentage of corn acres planted using precision agriculture has increased approximately 23%, from 49% in 2005 to 72% in 2010 (USDA ERS ARMS, 2015). Precision agriculture (PA) encompasses a wide range of farming practices and ideas that are meant to maximize farm profits and efficiency while maintaining low negative impacts on the environment. PA practices are being adopted quickly across major corn producing states. Variable rate technology (VRT) used for any purpose is one PA practice increasing in its use on corn planted acres.

Previous studies have examined advantages and disadvantages of adopting PA practices such as variable rate …

Recalibration Methodology To Compensate For Changing Fluid Properties In An Individual Nozzle Direct Injection System, Joe D. Luck, Scott A. Shearer, Brian D. Luck, Michael P. Sama 2016 University of Nebraska - Lincoln

Recalibration Methodology To Compensate For Changing Fluid Properties In An Individual Nozzle Direct Injection System, Joe D. Luck, Scott A. Shearer, Brian D. Luck, Michael P. Sama

Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering Faculty Publications

Limited advancement of direct injection pesticide application systems has been made in recent years, which has hindered further commercialization of this technology. One approach to solving the lag and mixing issues typically associated with injection-based systems is high-pressure individual nozzle injection. However, accurate monitoring of the chemical concentrate flow rate can pose a challenge due to the high pressure, low flow, and changing viscosities of the fluid. A methodology was developed for recalibrating high-pressure chemical concentrate injectors to compensate for fluid property variations and evaluate the performance of this technique for operating injectors in an open-loop configuration. Specific objectives were …

Then And Now: Across Ten Years Of Arkansas Women In Agriculture, Paige Acklie, Jennie Popp, Donald Johnson, Tamara Walkingstick

Discovery, The Student Journal of Dale Bumpers College of Agricultural, Food and Life Sciences

The United States Agricultural Census show that between 2002 and 2012, the number of women farm operators in Arkansas grew 14% (from 19,856 to 22,637). These women operators have made up an increasingly larger percentage of all farm operators in the state (from almost 29% to nearly 33%). There is little published information regarding changes over time in the role of women in agriculture, their challenges, and factors important to their success. While some surveys of farm women have been conducted, these surveys are generally insufficient because data exist only for one point in time. This research uses the first, …

Effects Of Chemical Amendments To Swine Manure On Runoff Quality, Elizabeth L. Bullock, Dwayne R. Edwards, Phillip A. Moore Jr., Richard S. Gates

Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering Faculty Publications

Land-applied swine manure can be an environmental concern when runoff losses of manure constituents occur. The use of chemical amendments to mitigate these losses has been investigated for poultry litter, but materials such as swine manure have received less attention in this context, particularly at the plot scale or larger. The objective of this experiment was to evaluate the impacts of aluminum sulfate (alum; Al2(SO4)3), aluminum chloride (AlCl3), and ferric chloride (FeCl3) addition on runoff of selected constituents of land-applied swine manure. Manure was collected from feeder pigs fed a …

Exploration And Implementation Of Innovative Efficiencies/Devices In Beet Processing For Energy Production, Patrick McInerney 2016 School of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics, Institute of Technology, Tralee, Co. Kerry, Ireland

Exploration And Implementation Of Innovative Efficiencies/Devices In Beet Processing For Energy Production, Patrick Mcinerney

Theses

The imminent depletion of fossil fuels, as well as concerns for energy security and the obligation to respond to climate change has led to expanding worldwide popularity of Anaerobic Digestion (AD) of energy crops. Sugar beet is a popular AD feedstock due to its favourable characteristics; however it can be quite labour intensive requiring a range of specialist equipment to process the crop prior to undergoing AD. A crucial stage of this process involves the size reduction of beet by a mechanical chopper unit; this pretreatment breaks open the cellulose structure of the crop and increases the surface area available …
