Discovery Day - Daytona Beach
Supported by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), this project’s objective is to create a novel simultaneous surface and discrete depth water sampler for use with an uncrewed aircraft, something which has not been done before. The device will be used to improve the spatiotemporal resolution of harmful algal bloom (HAB) monitoring on Lake Okeechobee in South Florida to provide timely and precise information on water quality and HABs. HABs are characterized by the EPA as certain species of algae that can produce harmful toxins and produce excessive blooms or growth in certain conditions. Often occurring in warmer months due to …

Advancing Vtol Tail-Sitter Stability Through Modern Flight Control And System Identification, Tobey Cram, Jacob House, Alexander Theophanis
Discovery Day - Daytona Beach
Title: Advancing VTOL Tail-Sitter Stability Through Modern Flight Control and System Identification The concept of tail-sitter aircraft can be traced back to Nikola Tesla nearly 100 years ago; however, no aircraft with this novel design materialized until nearly 20 years later during World War II, when efforts were made to reduce reliance on runways. One notable design that emerged during the Cold War was the Convair XFY-1 Pogo. This design failed for reasons common to many others of the time: pilots had extreme difficulty landing while looking over their shoulders, and the technology of the era could not reliably maintain …

Discovery Day - Daytona Beach
The increasing complexity of public safety operations in urban and high-density environments necessitates intelligent, mobile surveillance systems capable of real-time threat identification and situational awareness. Traditional monitoring approaches, such as fixed CCTV systems and manual observation, are often limited by coverage, scalability, and response latency in complex environments or large-scale events. This project addresses these challenges through the development of a computer vision-enabled Uncrewed Aerial System (UAS) designed for crowd monitoring and firearm detection. The primary objective is to design and validate a modular, Artificial Intelligence (AI)-Machine Learning (ML)-driven model capable of identifying firearms within dynamic environments while supporting real-time …

Enhancing Fibre–Matrix Interface Properties In Cfrps Using Cohesive Zone Modelling, Arjun Myadam, Alexander Skoppe
Discovery Day - Daytona Beach
Carbon fibre reinforced polymers (CFRPs) are extensively used in aerospace, automotive, and structural applications owing to their high specific strength, stiffness, and design flexibility. The mechanical performance of these composites is critically governed by the fibre–matrix interface, which controls stress transfer and directly influences damage initiation, crack propagation, and fracture behaviour. The interface strength is quantified through the interfacial shear strength (IFSS) and fracture energy, both serving as key indicators of composite integrity. Nanoscale fibre surface modifications are widely employed to enhance interfacial bonding and can also impart multifunctionality, such as capacitive properties, magnetic behaviour, and piezoelectricity. For instance, nanoscale …

Discovery Day - Daytona Beach
Air taxis are meant to perform short-distance, lower-altitude flights in challenging terrain- whether it be maneuvering around skyscrapers in urban areas, or for emergency responders in remote, difficult to access areas. It is paramount that the control system is intuitive and user friendly, since air taxi pilots will likely receive less training than commercial airline pilots. The Human Factors Department is working to advance Urban Air Mobility (UAM) initiatives by evaluating alternative inceptors (ie. control systems) that might be used in Vertical Take-Off and Landing (VTOL) air taxi designs. The controller itself needs to have specific and distinct enough operations …

Discovery Day - Daytona Beach
The Nano Aircraft using Underactuated Technology (NAUT) project presents a novel swashplateless rotor system that achieves cyclic pitch control using a single actuator, eliminating the need for conventional multi-servo swashplate assemblies. This approach is specifically tailored for nano unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) operating within Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) environments, where size, weight, and power constraints demand highly efficient and simplified control architectures. A functional prototype has been developed and experimentally validated, demonstrating measurable cyclic pitch variation and effective control authority. Multiple mechanism variants are currently being investigated to evaluate performance trade-offs in responsiveness, mechanical efficiency, and aerodynamic effectiveness. These configurations …

Over two consecutive years, the team used both conceptual and computational methods, ranging from initial sketches and precedent research to software-based aerodynamic modeling, subscale testing, and full-scale fabrication, to optimize glide performance in a low-speed, low Reynolds number flight regime. The work emphasized the value of interdisciplinary collaboration, communication, and hands-on engineering judgment …

Access to critical medical infrastructure and supplies can be limited in rural and remote communities, where long travel distances and limited transportation networks can delay emergency response/care. In fact, according to the National Library of Medicine, in the United States alone, “about 20% of the US population—more than 50 million people—live in rural areas, but only 9% of the nation's physicians practice in rural communities”, highlighting the challenges many communities face in accessing timely medical resources. Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), however, offer a potential solution by providing fast and flexible delivery of critical life support medical payloads. Project 337, developed …

This project develops a Starlink-based navigation and control system for fixed-wing UAVs that overcomes traditional range constraints through low-earth orbit satellite and cell network connectivity. The system integrates a Starlink terminal with an onboard flight computer running custom …

This project will go into the characteristics that lead to the concept of “Trim adjustment” in aircraft by modeling and demonstrating physical principles and mathematical concepts under ideal conditions. We will derive an equation from the basic physical principles of torque and lift to demonstrate how the trim is adjusted in steady, constant velocity flow for the sake of the pilot’s ease of control and to induce stability in flight. These adjustments are considered differently with different types of aircraft; as such, we will be focusing on mono-fixed-winged aircraft with one engine and conventional helicopter designs. Both flying devices will …

With the rapid expansion of MAV use; labs, students, hobbyists, can benefit from manufacturing Electric Ducted Fans (EDFs), both fans and ducts, in-house rather than purchasing traditional propellers. There are several advantages of utilizing EDFs, as they can minimize wing tip vortices, reduce wake contraction, and induce a duct lip Coanda effect which all lead to an increased system efficiency. However, EDF implementation in MAV's remain largely unexplored due to the difficulty of development and the production …

3 & 4 motor systems have been in the world of aviation in many different forms as the field grows and evolves. To understand the complexities of an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) and its stability, assessing the amount of thrust put into each motor can help generate the torque produced despite factors such as multidirectional movement. While a UAV does this multiple times a second, producing a simplified version of this calculation can aid in simpler models simulating UAV movement. Due to the popularity of the quadcopter drone, a simple algorithm depicting thrust through each spinning motor can aid in …
