The purpose of the study was to examine the effects of family support (affective and instrumental) and friendship (affective and instrumental) on the psychological well-being of older women in one district in Hong Kong. The study sample consisted of 60 older women aged 60 to 85. The results show that family support (affective and instrumental) and friendship (affective and instrumental) are all related positively significantly to psychological well-being (measures of positive affect include happiness, life satisfaction, and competency; and negative affect include stress, anxiety, and depression). In response to the perceived housing needs of single elderly people, the "Housing for Senior Citizens" Scheme has been developed by the Hong Kong Housing Authority since the mid-1980s to provide shared housing for unrelated elderly people. Under this scheme, they live together in an apartment unit with individual bedrooms, but sharing certain facilities. This group is fairly numerous and, in Hong Kong in 1998, there were about 110,000 elderly people living alone for various reasons，among whom 34,000 were tenants in public housing estates. Despite some advantages, shared living for any age group can however lead to potential problems.

The purpose of the present study is first to examine the relationship between organizational strategies and job stress, taking the assumption that personal control will mediate the underlying organizational strategies-job stress connection, and then to develop stress copings by recombining management with regard to their impact on personal control. The present study is a 15-month project which collected data from Hong Kong mangers at three points to examine the role of age, coping strategies, and locus of control in managerial stress in Hong Kong. A total of 634 managers was drawn by random sampling and purposive sampling method. The Occupational Stress Indicator-version 2 (OSI-2) was used as the instrument to collect data by self-administered survey method. The result showed that age was negatively related to job satisfaction, mental well-being, and physical well-being. Despite the importance of retirement planning to the maintenance of social and economic well-being in later life (Monk, 1985; Dorfman, 1989, Maule, Cliff, and Taylor, 1996) and in spite of the fact that retirement planning has received increased attention from western gerontology researchers, it is as yet largely missing from the agenda of elderly research in Hong Kong. This paper presents an attempt to introduce some local insights into the subject.

Summary

This paper reviews the background to demographic ageing in the Asia-Pacific region and discusses some of the economic and cultural features associated with it. The region includes countries exhibiting a variety of experience in demographic ageing and percentages aged 65 years or more range from 3% to 16%. Fairly distinct sub-regional ageing groupings are emerging. At the demographically older extreme lie Japan, Hong Kong, Singapore, Taiwan and Korea. Hong Kong has been a British Colony for more than one and a half centuries. The British has provided a legal-administrative framework under which the Chinese live and work (Chan and Lee, 1995), The Census showed that ninety-eight percent of the Territory's total population are ethnically Chinese. In 1991, nearly one half of HongKong's residents were immigrants from the Chinese Mainland and two thirds of the remaining were Hong Kong born off-springs of immigrants from the mainland.
