This paper intends to explore the political landscape of the Union during the first two years of the Civil War, specifically how the people in the North perceived what remained of the Congress from 1860-1862. I will be using a combination of primary and secondary sources to cover the 37th Congress of the United States, whose members were elected in 1860 and legislated until the next Congressional election in 1862. My research shows several significant stages in the political landscape during this period and uses these stages of partisan politics as the foundation for understanding how the federal government, …

This thesis seeks to answer the question: How can the digital humanities provide a vehicle that elevates the human impact of survivor narrative and testimony? An analyzation of how the digital humanities could preserve survivor testimony is conducted through an examination of how Bea Karp’s narrative will be shared through the Nebraska Stories of Humanity portal project. Based on this analyzation, the Nebraska Stories of Humanity portal could be an effective method for teaching Holocaust education for three main reasons. First, this portal project avoids perpetrator-oriented narratives by highlighting survivors and soldiers who liberated camps. Further, it also offers a …

Bodily Autonomy And Anti-Vaccine Discourse During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Haley Sherman

This paper explores the relationship between anti-vaccine discourse and ideas about bodily autonomy. I analyze the cyclical nature of vaccine hesitancy and show that it can lead to misinformation and harmful narratives. This paper uses theories of bodily autonomy that identify a concept called moral obligation. This concept, as explored by Alberto Giubilini, is a utilitarian approach in which citizens have a responsibility to their governments to get vaccinated so that, in turn, their governments can fulfill their obligation of protecting other individuals’ health (Giubilini 2020, 54). This thesis explores the causation of a separatist movement and the complexities of having a competing, subnational identity within a state, embodied by case studies of Catalonia, Spain, and Quebec, Canada.

There currently exists a distressed relationship between African Americans and housing due to previously enacted policies. In looking at this issue, I aim to use the theory of institutional racism to explain how past housing policies that enforce and perpetuate discrimination have impacted this current relationship. Through the method of policy analysis, I attempt to pinpoint where past housing policies have failed to provide housing to many African Americans. I find that there are several policies that were enacted during 1930s and 40s, specifically the New Deal Era, that inflicted discriminatory housing policies on African Americans. Colonialism has influenced the development of states on the African continent. This study examines the extent to which colonialism affects the economic growth and the political democratic development of two former British colonies: Kenya and Nigeria. Two theories, Dependency Theory and Neopatrimonialism Theory, argue that institutions, whether economic or political, established during the colonial period impact modern African states' economic and governmental development. Using pattern matching, I operationalized several variables of study such as economic underdevelopment, functioning democracy, power dynamics, and Settler and Non-settler colonial institutions. This paper explores the rise and impact of police officers in schools, frequently referred to as School Resource Officers or SROs. In addition to attempting to delegitimize the common explanation that school shootings necessitate SROs and their ongoing presence, the paper goes on to outline two under-researched drivers of SROs. These are the immense underfunding of public K-12 schools which forces a search for additional sources of revenue alongside an ongoing effort to suppress student movements and control students of color. Foreign policy rhetoric as a campaign strategy is limited in the current literature. The U.S.’ polarized political climate has divided voters along domestic issues. Therefore, foreign policy may be one of the few remaining “common ground” issues upon which U.S. presidential candidates can secure a broad, national coalition across the political spectrum. Pulling from Joe Biden’s speeches during his 2020 presidential campaign from C-SPAN’s coverage, I analyze his rhetoric in relation to China in a possible attempt to appeal to 2016 blue-collar Trump supporters. Climate change, or global warming at the time, made a significant public outcry in the 1970s. Two major international treaties, the Montreal Protocol of 1987 and the Kyoto Protocol of 1997, were created from the spark of international demand for action. Why is it that after such a movement, the global community still fails to cooperate on climate change action? Beyond (And Before) The Transnational Turn: Recovering Civil Disobedience As Decolonizing Praxis, Erin Pineda

Can civil disobedience be transnationalized? This question presumes civil disobedience to be a fundamentally domestic concept—one constitutively tied to both the nation-state and the normative underpinnings of liberal, constitutional democracies. This article shows how this assumption mistakes one version of civil disobedience’s twentieth-century intellectual history for the whole of it, and risks reproducing binaries (domestic vs. international, democracies vs. non-democracies) that trouble attempts to theorize the transnational. Turning to an alternative intellectual history—a network of civil rights and anticolonial activists—reveals a novel theory of civil disobedience as decolonizing praxis, as well the stakes of these binaries: the disavowal of white …

Despite the pervasive trend in civil war of multiple sponsors backing rebels or the government, there is surprisingly minimal analysis on how the balance of support influences conflict duration. Building on the research of Sawyer et al. (2017), who find that the “fungibility” of external support leads to longer civil war, this thesis contributes a new scoring method for analyzing the balance of “fungible” (hereafter “convertible”) support among combatants (rebels versus government), discovering that a balance of convertibility contributes to shorter conflict. Convertible resources are those that combatants manipulate to enhance their warfighting capacity, such as funding, while troops or …

A great deal of research focuses on the question of why incumbents invite IEOs but do not explicitly explored the root cause of why cheating in elections occurs despite the presence of IEOs. The occurrence when incumbents in young democracies invite international election observers (IEOs) and nevertheless cheat in elections has not been fully explored. This research advances the following expectation: incumbents seeking international benefits and whose electoral institutions are not fully mature are more likely to invite IEOs and cheat in an election. Is India the regional hegemon of South Asia? If so, what kind of hegemon is it? India has long been considered the regional hegemon of South Asia, primarily based on relative power considerations alone. We critique this material basis for hegemony. Hegemons must act to establish their hegemony, and smaller states must acquiesce to some degree to establish the relationship. We follow the literature to identify three strands of behavioral definitions of regional hegemony—leadership, domination, and sphere of influence—each drawing on different theoretical foundations, liberalism, realism, and imperialism, respectively. Political scientists have argued that populism is an ideology that can occur on both the left and right, whereby people begin to see politics as a battle between the people and a powerful elite that fails to represent the people’s interest and are attracted to political candidates who vow to fight corruption. In this chapter, I examine how research in political psychology may help to explain the motivations underlying citizens’ attraction to populist ideologies and political candidates. I argue that the same cognitive processes driving people toward populism are those that undermine the intellectual virtues, which in turn, decreases support …

The Appointment Of Women To Authoritarian Cabinets In Africa, Alex Kroeger, Alice J. Kang

What explains variation in the inclusion of women in authoritarian cabinets? We theorize that leaders of electoral autocracies are affected by changing international norms of democracy and women’s rights to appoint women ministers. We propose two hypotheses. First, increasing dependence on aid from democratic donors encourages leaders of electoral autocracies to appoint more women ministers. Second, electoral autocrats uprooting democratic traits appoint more women ministers to minimize the reputational costs of their autocratization. Using data from authoritarian regimes in 38 African countries between 1973 and 2013, we find that increases in aid from democracies are associated with modest increases in …

The saying goes, when life gives you lemons, make lemonade. When it comes to the Supreme Court’s criminal jurisprudence and its relationship to racial (in)equity, progressive scholars often focus on the tartness of the lemons. In particular, they have studied how the Court often ignores race in its criminal decisions, a move that in turn reifies a racially subordinating criminalization system.

However, the Court has recently issued a series of decisions addressing racism in the criminal legal system: Buck v. Davis, Peña-Rodriguez v. Colorado, Timbs v. Indiana, Flowers v. Mississippi, and

นับตั้งแต่ปี พ.ศ. 2549 ประเทศไทยเผชิญกับความถดถอยของประชาธิปไตยพร้อมกับการเปลี่ยนผ่านจากการเมืองของชนชั้นนำไปสู่การเมืองของมวลชน โดยมีปรากฏการณ์ที่มวลชนคู่ขัดแย้งสองฝ่ายต่างยึดถือความชอบธรรมคนละชุดและออกมาเคลื่อนไหวทางการเมือง ฝ่ายหนึ่งต่อต้านประชาธิปไตยยึดหลักความชอบธรรมแบบการปกครองตามจารีตประเพณีที่ดำเนินการตามอุดมการณ์หลักอย่าง “ ชาติ ศาสนา พระมหากษัตริย์” และอีกฝ่ายหนึ่งสนับสนุนประชาธิปไตยยึดหลักความชอบธรรมความถูกต้องตามกฎหมาย มีวาทกรรมจำนวนมากที่ถูกสร้างขึ้นเพื่อสนับสนุนความชอบธรรมของขบวนการเคลื่อนไหว แต่คำที่ถูกผลิตซ้ำและมีอิทธิพลต่อการเมืองไทยคือคำว่า “คนดี”และ “ความดี” ซึ่งสิ่งที่น่าสนใจคือมวลชนที่ให้คุณค่ากับวาทกรรม“คนดี”และ “ความดี” มีแต่ในขบวนการต่อต้านทักษิณเท่านั้น วิทยานิพนธ์นี้จึงมุ่งศึกษาความหมายของคำว่า “คนดี”และ “ความดี”ของแต่ละกลุ่มภายใต้ขบวนการต่อต้านทักษิณ สาเหตุที่ขบวนการต่อต้านทักษิณใช้วาทกรรม“คนดี”และ “ความดี”มาเป็นเครื่องมือในการสร้างความชอบธรรมและท้ายที่สุดวาทกรรมดังกล่าวส่งผลต่อการเมืองไทยอย่างไรในปัจจุบัน โดยใช้วาทกรรมวิเคราะห์เชิงวิพากษ์ (Critical Discourse Analysis: CDA) มาเป็นเครื่องมือในการศึกษาเพื่อให้สามารถสะท้อนหลักคิดเบื้องหลังวาทกรรมที่ขบวนการเคลื่อนไหวยึดมั่นและนำมาใช้เป็นความชอบธรรมในการชุมนุม ผลการศึกษาพบว่าภายใต้ขบวนการต่อต้านทักษิณมีการให้ความหมาย “คนดี”และ “ความดี” อย่างหลากหลายโดยได้รับอิทธิพลมาจากศาสนาพุทธผสมผสานกับลัทธิขงจื่อ ขบวนการฯใช้หลักการทางศาสนาเป็นแกนหลักในการเคลื่อนไหวและสร้างความชอบธรรมให้กับตนเอง ข้อเสนอของขบวนการต่อต้านทักษิณไม่เพียงแต่ขับไล่รัฐบาลเท่านั้น แต่พวกเขายังมีความพยายามเสนอรูปแบบการปกครองแบบใหม่ที่มีลักษณะเฉพาะให้ความสำคัญกับหลักคุณธรรมมากกว่าวิถีทางตามหลักประชาธิปไตยแบบสากลซึ่งส่งผลต่อการเลือกตั้งในปีพ.ศ. 2562 อย่างมีนัยสำคัญ

พลวัตทางการเมืองของตระกูลการเมืองท้องถิ่นภายใต้ระบอบอำนาจนิยม: ศึกษากรณีจังหวัดชลบุรี, อัฟนาน จรัลศาส์น

การวิจัยนี้เป็นวิจัยเชิงคุณภาพ มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษาพลวัตของอำนาจทางการเมืองและศึกษารูปแบบและวิธีการรักษาอำนาจทางการเมืองของตระกูลการเมืองท้องถิ่นจังหวัดชลบุรี ตั้งแต่เหตุการณ์รัฐประหารปี 2557 จนถึงการเลือกตั้งท้องถิ่นปี 2564 เก็บข้อมูลโดยการศึกษาเอกสาร และการสัมภาษณ์เชิงลึกจากผู้ให้ข้อมูลหลัก 15 คน วิเคราะห์ข้อมูลเชิงเนื้อหา และนำเสนอผลการวิจัยเชิงพรรณนา ผลการศึกษา พบว่า ตระกูลคุณปลื้มปรับตัวภายใต้ปกครองระบอบอำนาจนิยมโดยการไม่แสดงการต่อต้านการปกครองโดยคณะรัฐประหาร และตัดสินใจเข้าร่วมพรรคการเมืองฝั่งทหารเพื่อการฟื้นฟูอำนาจของตน แต่ผลกระทบทางอ้อม คือ ก่อให้เกิดกลุ่มท้าทายอำนาจสองกลุ่ม ได้แก่ 1) กลุ่มการเมืองในเครือข่ายพรรคก้าวไกล (พรรคอนาคตใหม่เดิม) ซึ่งเป็นขั้วตรงข้ามที่ชูนโยบายต่อต้านการสืบทอดอำนาจเผด็จการทหาร 2) กลุ่มการเมืองของนายสุชาติ ชมกลิ่น ที่แยกตัวออกจากบ้านใหญ่ชลบุรีหลังจากการแลกเปลี่ยนผลประโยชน์ไม่ลงตัวในการเลือกตั้งปี 2562 ทั้งสองกลุ่มกลายมาเป็นคู่แข่งสำคัญในจังหวัดชลบุรี โดยกลุ่มแรกดึงคะแนนเสียงจากคนรุ่นใหม่และชนชั้นกลางที่ไม่ได้มีความยึดโยงกับตระกูลคุณปลื้ม ส่วนกลุ่มที่สองดึงนักการเมืองบางส่วนที่ไม่เห็นด้วยกับการปรับแนวทางการบริหารเครือข่ายบ้านใหญ่ที่เน้นการอุปถัมภ์ช่วยเหลือผ่านอำนาจในระบบราชการมากกว่าการให้เงินส่วนตัวแบบดั้งเดิม อย่างไรก็ตาม ตระกูลคุณปลื้มยังคงรักษาโครงสร้างอำนาจท้องถิ่นแบบขั้วเดียวในจังหวัดชลบุรีได้ผ่านวิธีการเปลี่ยนขั้วทางการเมืองเพื่อเข้าร่วมฝั่งรัฐบาลในการเมืองระดับชาติ วิธีการจัดสรรผลประโยชน์ภายในเครือข่ายบ้านใหญ่ชลบุรีและสร้างเครือข่ายอุปถัมภ์เชื่อมโยงตระกูลคุณปลื้มกับประชาชนในการเมืองระดับท้องถิ่น
