For over thirty years, we have used a phrase “the Developing Global Crisis” to identify a cluster of recurring causal factors of chaos that are especially difficult to deal with. These are: population pressure (not simply growth), corruptions of governance (hard to study in democracies much less in police-states), authoritarian political systems, and militant religions. The West has failed to control these recurring causes of chaos, often by imperial patterns of behavior instead of more enlightened governance. Civilizational scholars in Japan might be able to find better solutions to these problems for Asia and the world if they try hard. …

The business discipline of strategy was born at Harvard Business School in the America of the 1970s, an era of disorienting economic fluctuations and sometimes naked vulnerability that was punctuated by disturbing events like the OPEC oil embargoes and the Iran hostage crisis. By the end of the decade, strategy claimed the imaginations of business executives and relegated its predecessor, marketing, to a distant second place. Marketing, whose focus was serving customer needs to grow demand, was neither tough enough nor quick enough to deal with the sudden appearance of economic and cultural monsters invading American life.

Through the evaluation and comparison of Machiavellian, Nietzschean, and Christian political thought, this thesis argues that Christian thinkers effectively meet the challenges posed to them by Modern philosophers. Modern philosophers reject the teaching that ethical principles have a transcendent origin in God and instead believe that morality is merely a matter of human convention. Christian philosophy was once dominant in influencing political thought. This thesis explores the relationship between federal redlining policy and the siting of air polluting facilities, using a dual approach of geospatial analysis and historiography on Philadelphia as a case study. Geographic Information System (GIS) tools are applied to Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) data on air polluting facilities and the Home Owners’ Loan Corporation (HOLC) Residential Security Maps. This analysis is used to determine the number of facilities within redlined neighborhoods and their patterns of density. Findings suggest that higher concentrations of polluting facilities are present in those neighborhoods ranked lowest by the HOLC, while neighborhoods ranked highest show remarkably …

Economic Sanctions have been imposed on nations throughout the Global South during the post-World War Two era. This led to the “Sanctions Decade” of the 1990s which saw the most devastating impacts on civilians in nations like Haiti and Iraq. The 2014 Russian annexation of Crimea resulted in sanctions being imposed on Russia by the European Union (EU), and retaliatory counter-sanctions from Moscow ensued shortly after. The Russian counter-sanctions banned the importation of certain agricultural foodstuffs from the EU, and this ban had significant implications for farmers in the EU who were now unable to sell to the large Russian …

A Wolf In Sheep’S Clothing: Christian Nationalist Belief And Behavior In The United States, Tommy Nanto

Sigma: Journal of Political and International Studies

Christian nationalism is a buzzword in American politics, but insufficiently researched in the intersection of politics, religion, and psychology. In a country where individual Christian practice is declining, why is this strand of nationalism seemingly on the rise? Through an original study, I establish an empirical link between Christian nationalism and racial resentment, finding that racial resentment is the single greatest predictor of Christian nationalist beliefs. I frame Christian nationalist beliefs separately from behavior. I find initial empirical evidence that racial resentment and Republican partisanship predict both belief and behavior, but religiosity does not predict Christian nationalist behavior.

I begin by problematizing Industrial Agriculture and making a case for Pitzer College to become a higher education leader in the global paradigm shift towards socially and ecologically just food systems. The aim of this dissertation is to advocate policies that can effectively address the challenge of unsheltered homelessness. Using a case study of Los Angeles homelessness, I evaluated policies aimed at easing homelessness using scenario analysis, employing system dynamic (SD) modeling. This study primarily focuses on the evaluation of the Housing First approach and the identification of more effective responses to homelessness. I use a linear regression model to identify key prevention policy levers, including, but not limited to, limits on eviction moratorium, rent stabilization, and affordable housing. Plastic waste management is an area of increasing concern for environmental and public health. Existing research shows that as of 2019, 79% of total generated plastic waste has accumulated in landfills or leaked into the environment, 12% incinerated, and 9% recycled. China’s Operation National Sword, launched in 2017, banned the import of plastic waste and other materials, triggering ripple effects throughout the global plastic scraps trade network. The word populism is often thrown around in news media and academic scholarship, but there is a lack of understanding of what it actually means as a political theory. In France, the two presidential candidates that made it to the second round in 2017, Emmanuel Macron and Marine le Pen, were both called populist, despite having vastly different campaign strategies and messages. This study used a computer-based method to analyze Campaign books from 24 candidates beginning in 1981 that determined that Populist language is on the rise, but not as aggressively as news media suggests.

This thesis examines the role played by city-level governments in determining the availability of housing within their locale. I propose an overarching hypothesis that features of government which provide greater opportunity for the public to influence their local governments will lead to a decreased availability of housing. This hypothesis is tested over the course of two chapters. First, through an analysis of cities throughout California, the effect of different structural features of government are tested against several dependent variables which measure housing availability in a series of linear regressions. Scholars have looked at the president’s growing electoral, administrative, and organizational responsibilities to support the theory. สารนิพนธ์ฉบับนี้มุ่งศึกษาบทบาทของสหรัฐฯ ในฐานะที่เป็นตัวกลางในการไกล่เกลี่ยความขัดแย้งระหว่างญี่ปุ่นและเกาหลีใต้ จนนำไปสู่ข้อตกลงว่าด้วยหญิงบำเรอ เมื่อปี ค.ศ.2015 โดยต้องการศึกษาสาเหตุที่สหรัฐฯ เข้ามามีบทบาทมากขึ้นในภูมิภาคเอเชีย ห้วงปี ค.ศ.2009-2017 โดยเฉพาะการเป็นตัวกลางในการแก้ไขข้อพิพาทกรณีหญิงบำเรอ และสาเหตุที่สหรัฐฯ เลือกแก้ไขความขัดแย้งกรณีหญิงบำเรอ ทั้งนี้ ผู้วิจัยได้ใช้งานของ David A. บทความวิจัยฉบับนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษาปัจจัยที่ทำให้ซาอุดิอาระเบียตัดสินใจตัดความสัมพันธ์ทางการทูตกับกาตาร์ ระหว่าง ค.ศ. 2017 - 2021 โดยใช้แนวคิดมหาอำนาจในระดับภูมิภาค การศึกษาพบว่าซาอุดิอาระเบียใช้ความเป็นมหาอำนาจกำหนดทิศทางการเมืองทั้งหมดในภูมิภาคตะวันออกกลางและไม่ต้องการให้กาตาร์แสดงศักยภาพและบทบาทในทุกมิติเกินหน้าซาอุดิอาระเบีย กล่าวคือ หลังทศวรรษ 2000 เป็นต้นมา กาตาร์ดำเนินนโยบายต่างประเทศเพื่อยกระดับบทบาทของตนในภูมิภาคตะวันออกกลาง ทำให้ซาอุดิอาระเบียมองว่าเป็นความพยายามที่จะขยายอิทธิพลแข่งกับตน การตัดความสัมพันธ์ทางการทูตกับกาตาร์ในครั้งนี้ถือเป็นการแสดงถึงความเหนือกว่าทางอำนาจ โดยใช้มาตรการลงโทษขั้นเด็ดขาด เพื่อรักษาไว้ซึ่งอำนาจ อิทธิพล และผลประโยชน์ของซาอุดิอาระเบีย และเป็นการจัดระเบียบภูมิภาคตะวันออกกลางเสียใหม่เพื่อให้กาตาร์กลับมาอยู่ในวงล้อมอำนาจและปฏิบัติตามแนวทางของซาอุดิอาระเบีย

การบรรเทาสาธารณภัยร่วมไทย-ลาว ระหว่าง ปี พ.ศ.2561-2566 : กรณีศึกษาภารกิจกองทัพอากาศ, พัทธพล ณ นคร

สารนิพนธ์ฉบับนี้มีจุดมุ่งหมายเพื่อศึกษาภารกิจกองทัพอากาศในการบรรเทาสาธารณภัยร่วมกับหน่วยงานอื่นๆ ในประเทศรวมทั้งประเทศลาว และวิเคราะห์ความสัมพันธ์ระหว่างสองประเทศ จากกรอบแนวคิดภารกิจนิยมใหม่มีแนวคิดเรื่องการบูรณาการ มีการดำเนินการข้ามพรมแดนของรัฐ มีการจัดตั้งหน่วยงานเข้ามาดำเนินการในการปฏิบัติงานเพื่อให้สำเร็จตามเป้าหมาย มีกระบวนการไหลรินมีเริ่มจากความร่วมมือร่วมจนพัฒนาความสัมพันธ์มาเป็นการปฏิบัติการร่วม ผลการศึกษาพบว่ากองทัพอากาศมีบทบาทหน้าที่ในการตอบสนองนโยบายรัฐบาลและปฏิบัติตามข้อตกลงอาเซียนว่าด้วยการจัดการภัยพิบัติและการตอบโต้สถานการณ์ฉุกเฉิน (AADMER) โดยกองทัพอากาศพัฒนากำลังทางอากาศในการปฏิบัติการร่วมกับหน่วยงานรัฐบาลและต่างประเทศ อย่างกรณีศึกษาตั้งแต่ ปี พ.ศ.2561-2566 จากเหตุการณ์อุทกภัยใหญ่ที่ประเทศลาว และเหตุการณ์ปัญหาหมอกควันข้ามพรมแดน การศึกษาได้ข้อสรุปว่า ในปี พ.ศ.2561-2564 ที่เกิดเหตุการณ์อุทกภัยใหญ่ที่ประเทศลาว รัฐบาลไทยได้มีส่วนร่วมในการช่วยเหลือโดยกองทัพอากาศได้นำอากาศยานไปลำเลียงสิ่งของอุปโภคและบริโภค ในปี พ.ศ.2562-2564 เหตุการณ์ปัญหาหมอกควันข้ามพรมแดน ที่หมอกควันส่วนหนึ่งมากจากประเทศลาว รัฐบาลไทยได้ขอความร่วมมือร่วมผ่านทางเลขาธิการอาเซียนเพื่อขอความร่วมมือประเทศลาว และกองทัพอากาศมีส่วนร่วมในการแก้ไขปัญหาหมอกควัน ในปี 2565-2566 จากความร่วมมือร่วมพัฒนากลายเป็นการปฏิบัติการร่วม ที่เริ่มจากกองทัพอากาศไทยและกองทัพอากาศลาวมีการประชุมเกี่ยวกับการบรรเทาสาธารณภัยจนนำไปสู่การฝึกร่วมประหว่างสองประเทศ จากกรอบทฤษฎีที่ใช้วิเคราะห์กรณีศึกษาดังกล่าว ทำให้เห็นถึงการพัฒนาจากความร่วมมือร่วมมาเป็นการปฏิบัติการร่วม จนทำให้เกิดความสัมพันธ์อันดีระหว่างสองประเทศ
