เหตุการณ์สังหารหมู่และกราดยิงที่เกิดขึ้นในประเทศไทยสร้างความสูญเสีย ส่งผลกระทบต่อสังคมอย่างมาก งานวิจัยนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อสร้างฐานข้อมูลของการเกิดเหตุการณ์สังหารหมู่และกราดยิงในประเทศไทย วิเคราะห์ปัจจัยที่เกี่ยวข้อง และเสนอแนะข้อคิดเห็นจากมุมมองทางจิตเวชศาสตร์ ผู้วิจัยทำการศึกษาเชิงพรรณนาแบบย้อนหลังโดยรวบรวมเหตุการณ์สังหารหมู่และกราดยิงในประเทศไทยระหว่างปี พ.ศ. 2537 - 2566 โดยใช้คำจำกัดความทางวิชาการสากล แล้วเก็บข้อมูลลักษณะทางประชากรและทางคลินิก รวมถึงปัจจัยที่เกี่ยวข้องกับเหตุการณ์ ผู้ก่อเหตุและเหยื่อ ผลการวิจัยพบมีเหตุการณ์สังหารหมู่และกราดยิงเกิดขึ้นรวม 78 ครั้งใน 30 ปีที่ผ่านมา โดยเป็นเหตุการณ์สังหารหมู่ 65 ครั้ง และเหตุการณ์กราดยิง 49 ครั้ง ผู้ก่อเหตุสังหารหมู่ส่วนใหญ่เป็นเพศชาย (89.23%) ใช้อาวุธปืนก่อเหตุ (66.16%) มีประวัติการใช้สารเสพติด (27.69%) มีประวัติการฝึกใช้ปืน (20%) มีประวัติโรคทางจิตเวชที่มีความเสี่ยงสูงต่อการก่อความรุนแรง (7.7%) มีผู้เสียชีวิต 348 รายจากเหตุการณ์รวมทั้งหมด โดยสรุปคือเหตุการณ์สังหารหมู่และกราดยิงในประเทศไทยเกิดขึ้นเป็นประจำและมีแนวโน้มเพิ่มมากขึ้น ปัจจัยสำคัญของเหตุการณ์สังหารหมู่ในประเทศไทยคือการเข้าถึงและฝึกใช้อาวุธปืน ปัญหายาเสพติด ส่วนประวัติโรคทางจิตเวชพบไม่มาก การสร้างฐานข้อมูลและศึกษาเหตุการณ์เหล่านี้ทางวิชาการต่อไป อาจนำไปสู่แนวทางป้องกันที่ดียิ่งขึ้นในอนาคต

บทความวิจัยนี้มีเป้าหมายเพื่อสำรวจแนววิเคราะห์หลังสังคมนิยมหรือหลังคอมมิวนิสต์กับการอธิบายการเปลี่ยนผ่านทางการเมืองและเศรษฐกิจของประเทศอดีตสังคมนิยมและประเทศสังคมนิยม และการปรับตัวเพื่อการอยู่รอดของระบอบสังคมนิยมในประเทศสังคมนิยม ผ่านการศึกษาประเทศสังคมนิยมในเอเชียตะวันออกเฉียงใต้ ได้แก่ สปป.ลาวและเวียดนาม ด้วยการทบทวนเอกสารและงานวิจัยที่เกี่ยวข้อง ผลการศึกษาพบว่า หลังสังคมนิยม หรือ หลังคอมมิวนิสต์ เกิดขึ้นในยุคปลายสงครามเย็นที่หลายประเทศสังคมนิยมปฏิรูประบบเศรษฐกิจและพัฒนาประชาธิปไตย จนนำไปสู่การศึกษาการเปลี่ยนผ่านและการทำให้(ประชาธิปไตย)เข้มแข็ง ที่เชื่อเรื่องความเป็นสากล โดยนักรัฐศาสตร์การเมืองเปรียบเทียบ แต่แนวทางดังกล่าวกลับได้รับการโต้แย้งโดยนักวิชาการด้านอาณาบริเวณศึกษาที่เชื่อเรื่องความหลากหลายและการเปลี่ยนผ่านครั้งใหญ่ หลังจากนั้นการศึกษาหลังสังคมนิยมจึงมุ่งเน้นการเปลี่ยนแปลงทางเศรษฐกิจ การเมืองและสังคมที่เกิดขึ้นในประเทศอดีตสังคมนิยมและสังคมนิยมปัจจุบัน

การวิจัยเรื่อง “จากจอบสู่จาน: เชฟส์ เทเบิล การกินอย่างมีหลักการ และภูมิทัศน์อาหารไทย” มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อ (1) ศึกษาการกินอย่างมีหลักการและรูปแบบภูมิทัศน์อาหารไทย (2) ศึกษาแนวทางการเพิ่มมูลค่าทางเศรษฐกิจการกินอย่างมีหลักการ และ (3) เพื่อนำเสนอแนวทางการพัฒนาการกินอย่างมีหลักการสู่การเพิ่มมูลค่าทางเศรษฐกิจ กลุ่มตัวอย่าง คือ เชฟที่มีชื่อเสียง ซึ่งเป็นเจ้าของร้านอาหารที่ให้บริการประเภทเชฟส์ เทเบิล และหรือเป็นผู้ที่มีการนำหลักเรื่องการกินอย่างมีหลักการมาใช้เป็นแนวทางปฏิบัติ จำนวน 5 คน วิธีการวิจัยใช้การสังเกตการณ์แบบมีส่วนร่วม และการสัมภาษณ์กลุ่มบุคคลสำคัญ  ผลการวิจัย พบว่า (1) จริยธรรมด้านอาหารเป็นเรื่องเกี่ยวกับการเลือกที่เราเชื่อว่าดีและถูกต้องเกี่ยวกับอาหารที่เรากิน เชฟและผู้ร่วมงานสร้างสรรค์เมนูบนพื้นฐานของการคิดถึงห่วงโซ่อุปทานของระบบอาหารยั่งยืนที่สัมพันธ์ไปกับท้องถิ่น วัฒนธรรมและฤดูกาล (2) เมนูสร้างสรรค์ สัมพันธ์กับเรื่องราวของเชฟ ที่มาของวัตถุดิบ วิธีการปรุง วิธีปฏิบัติการเสิร์ฟอาหารและการจับคู่กับเครื่องดื่ม เป็นแนวทางการเพิ่มมูลค่าทางเศรษฐกิจการกินอย่างมีหลักการภายใต้ระบบเศรษฐกิจสร้างสรรค์ที่สามารถสร้างรายได้ให้กับธุรกิจอาหารและวิสาหกิจรายย่อย ควบคู่ไปกับการเชิดชูคุณค่าของวัฒนธรรมอาหารท้องถิ่น (3) การใช้ภูมิทัศน์อาหาร รวมถึงยกระดับอาหารท้องถิ่นมาสู่เมนูสร้างสรรค์ในร้าน เป็นแนวทางการพัฒนาการกินอย่างมีหลักการที่สามารถสร้างงานในชุมชนท้องถิ่นผ่านการผลิต/จัดหาวัตถุดิบ/แรงงานจากละแวกท้องถิ่น การศึกษาเน้นย้ำว่า การกินอย่างมีหลักการไม่เพียงแต่เป็นปฏิบัติการทางอาหารเท่านั้น แต่ยังเป็นตัวเร่งการเติบโตทางเศรษฐกิจและการพัฒนาชุมชนภายในภูมิทัศน์อาหารไทย และยังแสดงให้เห็นว่า สามารถทำหน้าที่เป็นกรอบในการศึกษาวัฒนธรรมอาหารร่วมสมัยในมิติทางสังคมวิทยาและมานุษยวิทยาต่อไปได้อีกด้วย

บทความนี้ศึกษาขบวนการเอกราช Catalonia โดยศึกษาเรื่อง ความเป็นมาทางประวัติศาสตร์ ความรุนแรงในช่วงต่างๆของการเคลื่อนไหว ความสัมพันธ์ระหว่างการเคลื่อนไหวเพื่อเอกราชกับรัฐธรรมนูญ เหตุผลของประชาชนที่สนับสนุนเอกราช และสถานการณ์ปัจจุบัน ความสำคัญพิเศษของขบวนการเอกราช Catalonia เพราะ Catalonia อยู่ในประเทศสเปนซึ่งมีลักษณะคล้ายประเทศไทยหลายอย่าง (เป็นประเทศประชาธิปไตยใหม่-ประมาณ 50 ปี / ปกครองระบอบประชาธิปไตยอันมีพระมหากษัตริย์เป็นประมุข / มีมาตราห้ามแบ่งแยกดินแดนในรัฐธรรมนูญ)  ปัจจุบันรัฐบาลสเปนใช้กฎหมายเพื่อห้ามการทำประชามติเกี่ยวกับเอกราข และจับผู้นำขบวนไปขังโดยตั้งข้อหากบฏเพราะทำขัดกับรัฐธรรมนูญ ขบวนการเอกราชจึงมีความเห็นว่าต้องตั้งคำถามเกี่ยวกับรัฐธรรมนูญเอง คำถามที่ถามไปยังศาลรัฐธรรมนูญคือ ในเมื่อรัฐธรรมนูญกล่าวในมาตรา 1 ว่าประเทศสเปนปกครองด้วยระบอบประชาธิปไตย ดังนั้นการจัดประชามติเรื่องเอกราชโดยอิงสิทธิในการกำหนดชะตากรรมตนเอง (ซึ่งเป็นส่วนหนึ่งของหลักการประชาธิปไตย) จะขัดกับรัฐธรรมนูญได้อย่างไร ส่วนประเด็นของการที่มาตรา 2 กล่าวว่าประเทศสเปนเป็นรัฐเดี่ยวไม่สามารถแบ่งแยก ก็แสดงว่ามาตราในรัฐธรรมนูญขัดกันเองและต้องแก้ที่จุดนี้  สิ่งที่ค้นพบจากการศึกษาการต่อสู้เพื่อเอกราชใน Catalonia คือ เมื่อขบวนการเอกราชมีที่ยืนในพื้นที่การเมืองและมีการถกกันเองภายในอย่างเปิดเผยเรื่องจะเอาเอกราชหรือไม่กลุ่มใช้ความรุนแรงผลักดันเอกราชก็ค่อยๆสลายไป ความรุนแรงที่เหลือคือการแสดงอารมณ์แรงในการถกเถียงกัน

The COVID-19 Pandemic caused a significant change in the way people voted 2020. Many Americans chose to absentee vote out of safety concerns. However, this process was not the same experience for all voters because some states require an excuse to absentee vote while others do not. This study analyzes whether there is a difference in voter turnout between states with no-excuse absentee voting and those without it. While reviewing voter turnout data for the 2016 and 2020 General Elections, this research finds evidence that turnout was higher in states with no-excuse absentee systems than those that require an excuse. …

This thesis examines the use of violent repression by dictators and the ways in which that violence is remembered, particularly through the lenses of literature and film. This dissertation consists of three essays that explore different dimensions of financial dynamics in the public and nonprofit sectors. Each chapter examines how the fiscal behavior of neighboring jurisdictions, policy interventions, and financial practices influence fiscal decision-making and financial performance within these entities.

In the first essay, I investigate yardstick competition in local government spending in South Korea by leveraging the exogenous variation introduced by by-elections. This approach allows me to estimate the influence of neighboring jurisdictions on local expenditures. The American historian Richard Hofstadter intended his still-influential essay on the “Paranoid Style in American Politics,” which initiated the modern study of conspiracy theories, as a response to the mid-1950s rise of right-wing populism in the US. Reflecting on the lessons we can learn from the insights and weaknesses of Hofstadter’s timely intervention into contemporary politics, as well as the author’s three decades studying conspiracy theories, the chapter asks how current academic work, which takes place within and responds to another rise in rightwing populism, should understand and intervene in the present and prepare for the future.

A Little Bird Told Me: The Lived Experiences Of Officers Who Participated In Deep Undercover Programs, Oakley Fungaroli

This study used interpretative phenomenological analysis to gather and analyze semi-structured interviews of seven participants who took part in deep undercover programs between the 1970s and 1990s. In the early 1980s, under pressure from civil rights advocates, law enforcement implemented policies restricting the use of undercover police officers in non-violent intelligence investigations. The new guidelines resulted in robust selection and training requirements for deep undercover assignments which became focused on those who advocated criminal acts in furtherance of social or political objectives. Attitudes towards immigration have been shown to be driven by dehumanization and disgust. The more people dehumanize immigrants and the more disgusted they feel, the more negative attitudes they tend to have toward immigrants. However, little is known about how exposure to social media content that links dehumanization, disgust, and immigration influences users’ attitudes on this issue. This is important to consider because the majority of adults in the United States are on social media. We used Twitter data, machine learning, and sentiment analysis to investigate whether exposure to dehumanizing or disgust-eliciting tweets about immigration impacts users’ own sentiment toward …

Does the partisan composition of three-judge panels affect how earlier opinions are treated and thus how the law develops? Using a novel data set of Shepard’s treatments for all cases decided in the U.S. courts of appeals from 1974 to 2017, we investigate three different versions of this question. First, are panels composed of three Democratic (Republican) appointees more likely to follow opinions decided by panels of three Democratic (Republican) appointees than are panels composed of three Republican (Democratic) appointees? Second, it writes the intellectual history of separation of structures, which has been an integral part of the separation of powers enterprise since its inception, including at the Founding. Third, it explores the scholarly and doctrinal implications of structural separation of powers. Common-law interpretive methodologies are mostly nonbinding, but some interpretive methodologies are seen as binding precedent. This Article offers an explanation for this state of affairs. Whereas the extant scholarship on common-law interpretive methodologies offers descriptive accounts (often assuming that common-law methodologies are per se nonbinding) and normative analysis, this Article fills a gap in the literature by providing a realist explanation for the legal landscape of binding interpretive methodologies. It identifies whether a methodology is rule-like, and whether it increases judicial legitimacy and/or court power as “pull factors”—that is, incentives that might attract judges to recognize interpretive methodologies as binding. …

Examining oral argument in the Australian High Court and comparing to the U.S. Supreme Court, this article shows that institutional design drives judicial interruptive behavior. Many of the same individual- and case-level factors predict oral argument behavior. Notably, despite orthodoxy of the High Court as “apolitical,” ideology strongly predicts interruptions, just as in the United States. Yet, important divergent institutional design features between the two apex courts translate into meaningful behavioral differences, with the greater power of the Chief Justice resulting in differences in interruptions. วิทยานิพนธ์นี้เป็นการศึกษาผลประโยชน์แห่งชาติจากคลองไทยภายใต้แนวคิดสมุททานุภาพของมาฮาน โดยการวิจัยเอกสารและวิเคราะห์ข้อมูลจากทฤษฎีสมุททานุภาพของมาฮาน ผลการศึกษาพบว่า ผลประโยชน์แห่งชาติจากคลองไทยตามทฤษฎีสมุททานุภาพของมาฮาน ประกอบด้วย (1) ผลประโยชน์ด้านเศรษฐกิจ (2) ผลประโยชน์ด้านความมั่นคง ซึ่งเป็นผลประโยชน์ที่มีแนวโน้มเป็นวัตถุประสงค์ที่แท้จริงในการขุดคลองไทย และ (3) ผลประโยชน์ด้านความสัมพันธ์ระหว่างประเทศ ช่วยผลักดันให้ประเทศไทยสามารถยกระดับสถานะกลายเป็นมหาอำนาจระดับภูมิภาคได้ โดยมีคลองไทยเป็นเครื่องมือต่อรองกับมหาอำนาจของโลก สอดคล้องกับแนวคิดของมาฮานที่เชื่อว่าระบบระหว่างประเทศเป็นการต่อสู้เพื่อได้มาซึ่งการครอบครองผลประโยชน์ทางการเมือง เศรษฐกิจ และดินแดน โดยใช้กำลังทางบกและทะเล ขณะเดียวกัน คลองไทยที่ได้รับอิทธิพลจากระบบระหว่างประเทศกลับมีบทบาทต่อการเสริมสร้างสมุททานุภาพแก่ตัวแสดงที่เป็นรัฐในระบบระหว่างประเทศเช่นกัน โดยอยู่ในลักษณะการมอบผลประโยชน์เพื่อสร้างความได้เปรียบทางภูมิรัฐศาสตร์โดยตรงและการเป็นปัจจัยผลักดันให้พัฒนาศักยภาพเพื่อแข่งขันกับรัฐคู่แข่งที่อาศัยผลประโยชน์จากคลองไทย อย่างไรก็ตาม สมุททานุภาพของมาฮานมีข้อจำกัดในการอธิบาย ผู้วิจัยจึงพัฒนาแนวคิดสมุททานุภาพใหม่ให้มีความร่วมสมัยสอดคล้องกับบริบทโลกปัจจุบันและสอดคล้องกับบริบทของประเทศไทยมากยิ่งขึ้น

ปัจจุบันจีนได้ดำเนินนโยบายต่างประเทศที่มีลักษณะเชิงรุกและมั่นใจมากขึ้นในประเด็น อาณาเขต ซึ่งนักวิชาการจำนวนมากมองว่าเป็นผลจากกระแสชาตินิยมที่ทวีความเข้มข้นขึ้น วิทยานิพนธ์ฉบับนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษาการทำงานของชาตินิยมจีนและผลกระทบที่มีต่อ นโยบายและพฤติกรรมของรัฐบาลภายใต้การนำของประธานาธิบดีสี จิ้นผิง ในกรณีข้อพิพาทหมู่ เกาะเตียวหยู/เซ็งกากุ ผู้เขียนใช้กรอบแนวคิดสัจนิยมคลาสสิกใหม่ โดยถือชาตินิยมเป็นตัวแปร ภายในประเทศ และนำมาวิเคราะห์นโยบายของจีนภายใต้บริบทที่แตกต่างกัน ผลการศึกษาพบว่า แรงกดดันจากกระแสชาตินิยมมีบทบาทสำคัญในการผลักดันให้จีนดำเนินนโยบายที่แข็งกร้าวมาก ขึ้นต่อประเด็นหมู่เกาะเตียวหยู อย่างไรก็ตาม อิทธิพลของชาตินิยมยังคงถูกจำกัดโดยปัจจัยเชิง โครงสร้างและบริบทภายในประเทศ ส่งผลให้รัฐบาลภายใต้การนำของสี จิ้นผิงมิได้ดำเนินนโยบาย ชาตินิยมอย่างสุดโต่ง หากแต่แสดงให้เห็นถึงความพยายามสร้างสมดุลระหว่างการตอบสนองต่อ แรงกดดันจากกระแสชาตินิยมภายในประเทศกับการจัดการความสัมพันธ์ระหว่างประเทศ วิทยานิพนธ์นี้ได้นำเสนอกรอบการวิเคราะห์ที่ช่วยให้เข้าใจพลวัตของปฏิสัมพันธ์ระหว่างชาตินิยม กับความสัมพันธ์ระหว่างประเทศได้อย่างเป็นระบบ

สารนิพนธ์ฉบับนี้ศึกษาเกี่ยวกับข้อพิพาทพื้นที่ทับซ้อนทางทะเลระหว่างประเทศไทยกับประเทศกัมพูชาในพื้นที่จังหวัดตราด ภายหลังการลงนามในบันทึกความเข้าใจ พ.ศ. 2544 แสดงให้เห็นถึงความซับซ้อนของการจัดการข้อพิพาทชายแดนในระบบระหว่างประเทศ การวิเคราะห์ผ่านกรอบทฤษฎีสัจนิยมคลาสสิกเผยให้เห็นว่าแม้จะมีกฎหมายระหว่างประเทศรองรับและความพยายามสร้างกลไกความร่วมมือผ่านแนวคิดพื้นที่พัฒนาร่วมแต่ข้อพิพาทดังกล่าวยังไม่ได้รับการระงับอย่างถาวร การวิเคราะห์เชิงคุณภาพจากข้อมูลประวัติศาสตร์ กฎหมายและนโยบายระหว่างประเทศชี้ให้เห็นว่าความยืดเยื้อของข้อพิพาทมีรากฐานมาจากปัจจัยสำคัญสามประการ ประการแรกคือการยึดมั่นในหลักอธิปไตยของรัฐและปกป้องผลประโยชน์แห่งชาติซึ่งทำให้การประนีประนอมกลายเป็นเรื่องยาก ประการที่สองคือมิติทางประวัติศาสตร์ที่เกี่ยวเนื่องกับความทรงจำในยุคอาณานิคมส่งผลต่อการรับรู้และการตอบสนองต่อข้อพิพาทของทั้งสองฝ่าย ประการสุดท้ายคือความไม่ชัดเจนและการตีความที่แตกต่างกันในกรอบกฎหมายระหว่างประเทศโดยเฉพาะเรื่องการกำหนดเส้นเขตแดนทางทะเล การศึกษานี้สะท้อนให้เห็นถึงข้อจำกัดของกฎหมายระหว่างประเทศและกลไกทางการทูตในการแก้ไขข้อพิพาทชายแดนโดยเฉพาะในระบบระหว่างประเทศที่อยู่ภายใต้สภาวะอนาธิปไตย รัฐต่างยึดมั่นในอำนาจอธิปไตยและผลประโยชน์แห่งชาติเป็นหลักทำให้การหาทางออกที่ยั่งยืนเป็นความท้าทายที่ต้องอาศัยมากกว่าเครื่องมือทางกฎหมายและการทูตเพียงอย่างเดียว
