The Legislative Appropriations Subcommittee Of The House Committee On Appropriations, Jean Remelius Jan 1965

The Legislative Appropriations Subcommittee Of The House Committee On Appropriations, Jean Remelius

Student Scholarship

The House Committee on Appropriations holds immense power as the traditional guardian of the Treasury, acting as a board of review for the entire federal program. Within this structure, the Legislative Appropriations Subcommittee is a vital but often overlooked unit responsible for the housekeeping and operational funding of Capitol Hill. Its jurisdiction includes the Architect of the Capitol, the Government Printing Office, the Library of Congress, and the House of Representatives itself. In 1963, the General Accounting Office was also transferred to this subcommittee’s oversight as a reward for the chairman’s stance in a jurisdictional dispute.

A Totalitarianism That Is Slow To Wither: The Program Of The Communist Party In Two Years' Perspective, G. Theodore Mitau Jan 1965

A Totalitarianism That Is Slow To Wither: The Program Of The Communist Party In Two Years' Perspective, G. Theodore Mitau

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

Despite Khrushchev's stress on "peaceful coexistence," on greater attention to consumer needs, and on certain "democratizing" reforms in the party apparatus and legal system of the state - concepts that had found their institutional expression in the program of the Party at the 22nd Congress - significant totalitarian elements in Soviet ideology and in the power monopoly of the party remained basically unchanged. That these elements cannot be ignored in any realistic appraisal of Soviet developments and intentions was again dramatically underscored by the manner of Khrushchev's removal in October of 1964. Ideology and program perform a central role in …

The Status Of Political Theory In The Study Of Politics, Jooinn Lee Jan 1965

The Status Of Political Theory In The Study Of Politics, Jooinn Lee

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

ABSTRACT - A general consensus among political scientists during the last decade seems to indicate that political science as a discipline will have a brighter future if it is guided by an approach that is behaviorally relevant; political theory is the least significant field of political science because it is least relevant to a behavioral treatment of the discipline. In this study, the author challenges such behavioral contempt for political theory by presenting his vindications of the importance and value of political theory. Furthermore, he attempts to locate political theory in a proper and legitimate place in the study of …

The Midwest Quarterly: A Journal of Contemporary Thought

in this issue. . .

EVERY laborer, and particularly the editor of such a journal as THE MIDWEST QUARTERLY, is deserving of a little time off. Not only does he need to rest and recruit himself, but more importantly he needs that holiday of the spirit that comes with putting the old routine behind him and sallying into fresh fields, from which, hopefully, he will bring back a rich harvest. There is also, we are bound to add, a very human need of recognition and appreciation, and he will never be more appreciated than when he is missed. Not a …

Kalamazoo, Michigan, And The Formation Of The Republican Party Of Michigan, James M. Rigterink Jan 1965

Kalamazoo, Michigan, And The Formation Of The Republican Party Of Michigan, James M. Rigterink

Masters Theses

Introduction

When Judge Levi Baxter rapped for order in the afternoon of July 6, 1854, at Jackson, Michigan, his gavel echoed the discontent gripping the Old Northwest. "Fellow citizens of Michigan...," he said, "let us bow our heads and pray for success in the great enterprise which has brought us here."1 In the oak grove the heads of 4,000 people of conviction bowed in agreement.2 By evening of that day the Republican party of Michigan was an accomplished fact.

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the background of the Jackson convention of July 6, 1854, with …

An Inquiry Into The Causes Of The Defeat Of The Republican Party In California In 1958, John Andrew Walker

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

California has been traditionally a Republican state, yet the Republicans have been unable to regain their traditional dominance since their defeat in 1958. The 1958 election represented a fundamental shift in the nature of California politics. More than that, the defeat of the Republicans pointed up a fundamental weakness in the Republican party.

The New Mexico State Hospital, 1952-June 1964: A Study In Politics And Public Administration, Robert S. Landmann

Political Science ETDs

Recognized as one of the nation's major health problems today, mental illness is affecting millions of lives. As a consequence, more and more people are becoming acquainted with the symptoms, problems and methods of treatment of the mentally ill and emotionally disturbed. Although the public is becoming increasingly aware or the problems of mental health, and despite the fact that advances have been made in effective psychiatric treatment, there still exist anachronistic and ineffective theories and practices of treating the mentally ill.
